    Peninsular Restaurant

Peninsular Cantonese restaurant is considered one of the nicest in Tamworth. For a few years…read morerunning, they've received rewards for the Best Chinese food in the region, and everyone you speak to who's been here can't stop raving about it. With those firm recommendations under the belt, we've now eaten in Pensinsular twice, each time with the same experience -- ok food, twee decor and very slow service, at exhorbitant prices. I hate when everyone I know recommends a restaurant, and then I find it a bit blah. I feel as if I'm missing something, and always want to try it again to see what might be different the next time. Technically, we've been to Peninsular three times. The first time, it was mid-week, and we noticed they weren't very busy (about half full), so decided to pop in on a whim, and hadn't heard of it. We went in the small door at the front, through the strange, residence-style lobby, and waited at the hostess desk. After waiting a few minutes, and with three waitresses having walked past us without greeting us, we thought perhaps they were busier than we thought. The bartender, who was at the bar right near us, was staring at us, but without saying anything, so I walked up and asked him if he could let someone know we were waiting for a table. He shrugged and said, "I don't know where they are". So we resumed waiting. Finally someone without a waiting staff uniform walked past, so we grabbed her and told her we were waiting for a table. She looked us up and down and barked, "Have you booked?". We said no, but pointed out they were half full. She shook her head, and said she wasn't sure, she'd be right back. After five more minutes, we'd been waiting a full 15, and she hadn't returned, so we walked out, pretty appalled at the experience. The second time we went in, we'd had enough recommendations to figure our experience was a fluke. This time we were greeted and sat down within five minutes. We ordered an array of food, as we'd been decorating all day, and were tired and hungry. The beers on tap (draught) were Carling and Stella, and our starters came within a few minutes. The crab won tons had obviously been freshly fried, and were very tasty. The service was very slow, and twice we waited more than 15 minutes for someone to come and ask if we wanted drinks, or take our plates away. The restaurant wasn't very busy, so I presume they were understaffed. The rest of the food was definitely just OK, with all of it being on the lukewarm side, and the flavours, which were slightly Chinese fusion, not really working. Our third trip back, we had the same experience, but this time, we waited so long for each portion of our meal, my husband had to get up and go find someone. The food the third time around was a bit hotter, and seemed better cooked, but again, the flavours weren't anything to write home about. Freshly cooked, higher-end takeaway could definitely knock the culinary socks off of Peninsular. Peninsular is very expensive for the basic cuisine and bland presentation. This is higher-end takeaway fare at foodie prices. So despite copious recommendations of a Birmingham area Chinese favourite, Peninsular gets a resounding "meh".

Cantonese cuisine with lots and lots of choice on the menu and decent service. Distinct lack of…read moreparking though - which can be problematic - we have been known to have to park in nearby residential streets and walk a good 5 mins back. Seating arranged over two floors - very typical decor - a bit kitsch really in a way - especially the huge fish tank downstairs. But I kinda like Kitsch and opulent so I don't mind it. The staff are good in a non-invasive way. They are polite and possibly a little 'wary' for want of a better word - but they certainly serve you efficiently. It does get a little overcrowded in here - but not to the point of uncomfortable - good idea to book if at the weekend. The set menu is actually really good - which is unusual - and their sticky ribs are to die for!! Also any of the duck dishes - I have a thing about duck but not many places cook it right. Its the kind of place that is only as good as the company you are in atmosphere wise - its not full of life or renowned for its 'in - crowd'. You could eat here in a big group and be equally as happy on a romantic night out for two (I have done both).

Please don't be fooled by exteriors…read more.. As its name suggests, it's Star Anise's job to add a bit of spice to Mere Green's culinary landscape. This place presents a functional image, rather than going for a gimmicky take on Chinese food culture. Why? Well, it's because the food does all the talking. It does everything to a tea, the detail has brought me here again and again. I'm salivating as I write and think about the fried rice and the yuk sung is one of the tastiest dishes I've ever eaten. In fact, I could order a whole feast of sides from this Chinese and never feel like I'm missing out on something more special. Shhhh... the crunch of the lettuce leaves are calling me. Parking outside shouldn't be a problem, but make sure you look both ways as the sweet and sour smell may make you lose your concentration.

Fast, friendly service, great takeaway food..... but isn't that pretty much what you'd expect?…read moreWhat, if anything, gives Star Anise an extra boost? Firstly, despite the main road location, its setting within a commercial strip that useful 20 feet back from the traffic means parking outside the door is simple. It's not something that similar ventures in Sutton can boast. A clear view into the busy kitchen is also welcome, if only for the sense that in terms of freshness and hard work, it has nothing to hide. And while it may seem a small thing, there is ample, comfy seating while you wait, complete with a table to spread out the choice of national and local newspapers available to browse. Finally, staff make a point of checking your order before taking payment and again when you leave. It's a place to which you'll likely return, once given a go. Recommended.
