I should have done more research before coming here. Not knowing the menu or German was a…read moredisadvantage. I saw Sweet Coffee Pirates was categorized as a Breakfast & Brunch spot, and headed over for Sunday brunch. I didn't see a printed menu, which would have been nice to throw into Google Translate, so I read off the chalk board behind the counter. I was looking for food, so I skipped over the espresso and dessert. I saw two categories for food: bagels and breakfast. Alright, now what to pick... The breakfast section had two choices. Again, not knowing German, I had to take my best guess. Each was a selection of breakfast items, either a smaller or larger selection. I opted for the smaller. I paid at the counter and sat down. It's a small and well-decorated place. The room to the right is adorned with espresso and coffee equipment, both artifacts and new items for purchase. The server delivered my latte and breakfast platter to me. Upon receiving my food, I was a bit disappointed. I paid €6-something for a slice of bread, a small roll, jam, one slice of ham, one slice of cheese (I'm guessing gouda), and a wedge of brie. Not to get cheap and count pennies, but I know how much these items cost at the store. Figuring out that none of this was made on site, it was all bought and just sliced and put on to a plate, I was super disappointed. The bread came sliced already, the roll is a roll, the jam you scooped from a big jar to put into a small dish, the cheese came sliced and so did the ham. Okay, so maybe someone cut the brie, but still, that's not a lot of added value. Not even a boiled egg or something. Needless to see, I was disappointed with the breakfast platter. Despite this obvious let down, I'm giving four stars because the dessert was good. Really good. I had the brownie with walnuts and caramel. Upon first glance, it seems like a small serving for the price, but it's good. It's moist and chewy, there are caramel ribbons within the brownie as well as on top, and the walnuts are enough to keep it balanced without overwhelming. VERDICT: Come for the dessert and espresso, not for breakfast.

An amazing coffee oasis near the Dortmund downtown in Germany…read more One of the best coffee beans I bought this year, has all the tastes you can smell :) The place, has comfortable and cozy, just what you need to enjoy your favorite brew. They offer different brewing methods from a syrupy espresso in a La Marzocco to aero press and pour overs. If you ever find yourself on this side of the world and missing great coffee, this is your place!

They also have the roaster in the back so coffee is roasted on site. The coffee is nicely roasted, and they serve a wide range of hand brewed filter coffee. They offered six different coffees when I was there and I sampled all. The standout one was the Ethiopian as well as the Guatemala but they were all good. For espresso based beverages they offer two different espressos one Brazilian and one Ethiopian. Very different but both very good. I personally preferred the Ethiopian one on its own and the Brazilian went excellent with milk based coffees. They also serve some nice pastries and cakes. I tried the gooseberry cake and that was really delicious. Couple that with friendly, fast and knowledgeable service and you have a winner! What could improve to make it a five you may ask? I would say more food options as well as more seats - yes I like the spaciousness but it also gets full even when it would be easily possible to fit more people. This is however clearly the best coffee in Dortmund and is a solid contender for best in Germany.
