I grew up around High Wycombe and used to frequent the Old Crown in Skirmett...sadly now a private house. Despite living in Shepherds Bush at the time...the Old Crown and the wonderful grumpy Peter (the landlord) was my real local. He could abuse one with style...and still serve an excellent pint of Breakspears, and his long suffering wife Liz, was a marvel in the kitchen. So we'd stopped in the overblown Hand & Flowers in Marlow that couldn't or wouldn't serve us a pint at 12.15...come back at 14.45 was their suggestion, and as it was full of BMW driving Buckinghamshire hedge fund types and their loud kids...we voted with our feet and left to find somewhere else. I then remembered reading about how the Stag & Huntsman had been given a make over...and my lord does it work! The place still has individual rooms to drink in, for food our two bowls of roast tomato soup hit the spot and the beer was excellent. I must also commend the staff in particular a young lady (Claire?) who was very competent, organising the staff, taking phone calls and generally keeping the who place toddling along. Her customer care skills in person or on the phone got a 10/10. We sat, supped and relaxed for a couple of hours reading the Saturday papers, and we left wishing that the US could do pubs.....but it can't! Next time we plan to stay once the bedroom door isssue I read about on TripAdvisor have been fixed.

I loved that there is a bread basket waiting for you right when you sit down and they took our drink order immediately so I had my Hendrick & soda with cucumber as I perused the tasty menu. And we got a free side of veggies as a nice healthy surprise. Their menu is seasonal & they have specials so there's sure to be something new every time, which I love. -Duck terrine: Gamey and fantastic. The cranberry relish and toast compliment it perfectly. -Thai fishcake: Probably favorite part of the meal. Incredible spices. -Lemon sole fillets with crab meat and sauce: So many amazing flavors. -Monkfish wrapped in pancetta: Nice but the pancetta overpowered the monkfish, which is such a delicious fish on its own. -Sticky toffee pudding: One of the best I've had! Will definitely be coming back to try new stuff!

The selection of beers is great and the decor of the pub is warm and inviting. The menu is extensive and, when the food actually turns up, the produce is home-cooked and tasty. The pub can get pretty busy and the kitchen really struggles to keep up with the orders. The last time I went on a weekday lunch the (albeit delicious) cod and chips took over an hour to arrive. Not much good when you've got better things to do than see how far you can nurse a pint.

We took a chance . Wow we're glad we did. It is tucked away in Chinnor, along a very narrow country lane that brings you to the High Street and then the pub. It is stunning from outside and the ambiance and decor inside envelopes you in the years gone by country pub of legend. Only locals here , except us. As soon as we arrived, complete strangers greeted us warmly. We stepped through the door and Coco the owners friendly dog came up to us and said "hello". Lots of local English Bitter on tap and the usual lagers. The menu is compact but it all looked good. The nachos as an appetizer were huge and scrumptious. We both had the steak burger. The photo says a lot, but the taste ! It should be called "wow" Burger. Delicious, The fries ? Best we've had in Britain! Like Gin ? There is a huge list to choose from. The owner and the chef are Polish. This influenced the menu - we had the Polish Apple Cake with vanilla ice cream and did not disappoint. The Shepherds Crook is off the beaten track but is a definite "destination pub" . 5 stars all the way.

In the end we were glad we did - but it didn't start too well! Thinking Saturday night would be busy we took the precaution of booking so, were surprised on arrival, to find only one other table with 4 guests was occupied.Didn't mind that because it usually means you will get red hot service, not so tonight! After being seated by a very charming young man we were abandoned for ten minutes with no menus to ponder and no drinks to sup. Thinking it might be one of those places where you order drinks and food at the bar I went off to investigate to find the waiter behind the bar who was just coming to serve you sir. Ordered the drinks and he did thankfully, turn up quite quickly and then a while later appeared with the menus. With a little trepidation we ordered but can only comment that the meal was an excellent surprise. The home made soups were especially nice and lovely steaks were well presented and worthy of the price. Served with chunky style chips that satisfied the hunger pains and followed by excellent sweets of good portions. You really only need one cheese and biscuits between two although all of ours disappeared! The local ice cream wasn't bad either although have had tastier. So all in all a very pleasant meal of good standard and worth remembering for a special treat. On the plus side the food is excellent but they do fall down on the service side and would hate to be there when they were busy!It seemed the staff were rushing around all evening but not sure why as they only visited tables when they had to and never more than a quarter of the tables occupied all evening. Shame because all they need is a genial 'mine host'to welcome and take care of guests and they could create a really outstanding restaurant experience. We will definitely try it again just in case it was due to staff shortage or something but will go prepared for a wait.
