Just last week, I stopped by Guadalajara for a business trip. The late departing of my plane allowed me to spend a few hrs in the downtown area. As any other city I visit, I included a record store as part of my very short tour. Once in the Cathedral region I decided to walk to Roxy and Roll.
The first impression was of a very crowded and messy store full of books, vinyls and cd's. While developing my searching strategy a relatively short and skinny man asked me, not very politely, if I was looking for something in particular. In fact, I was not looking for anything in particular. However, just to initiate a dialog I asked for "The New York Dolls" vinyl's. He told me that he may have one and would cost me 4000 pesos (~$250 USD)! Yes, just like that! At the moment, I thought that the man had no idea what he was talking about since I can get a record of the Dolls for far less money in the US.
To continue my dialog with the man and start my browsing, I asked him how the records were organized. He sort of answered the question: no particular order since "people move things all the time" then he explained me in a very condescending and almost rude way "1 for 50 or 3 for 100 pesos on this side" and so on. Then, I started my browsing of that section and a few mins after the man stop by and start reorganizing the records. The funny thing is that I never changed the order of any records. Of course I was dealing with a very unique character that was very proud of HIS store. After two or three of these type of unique or uncomfortable interactions with the short and skinny man I purchased a few records. By then I was already having a good and interesting conversation with Ricardo V (now I know his name). Unfortunately, I was already in a rush and needed to catch my flight, Ricardo provided me with his network code so I was able to call for an Uber.
The store is great and very unique (it has beautiful birds in clean cages in random places!!), just like his owner. You need to learn how to navigate the store to get the best out of it, which is the way to go with Ricardo. He is probably rough on the edges but a passionate Tapatío, yes he is very passionate and proud of the culture of his city.
Ricardo and HIS store is a great excuse to go back to Guadalajara city one of these days. read more
