It's too easy to succumb to the bidding frenzy at Ross Auction. I'm superstitious about a lot of used goods having bad juju, but I found myself bidding for oddities like animation sericels and trays of gems and minerals. Don't got to a Ross Auctions expecting ambiance. This is a dirty, drafty warehouse space that smells like a garage. A lot of what you see looks like another man's treasure. Still, just sitting and watching the auctions is an interesting experience. The auctioneer is fast talking and gets the crowd revved. The people who work behind the desk and on the floor are very friendly and prompt. As someone who had never been to a live auction, I appreciated that they politely explained the ground rules and gave me a few tips. Auctions take time. There isn't a way to know exactly when the item you're eyeing will be up for bids. There's a slow guy working a snack bar and both times I visited there was a complimentary tray of muffins and cookies to nosh while you wait. Before bidding keep in mind that the auction house tacks on nearly 20 percent in taxes and fees. I saw a case sell for $4000 when I last visited and it's wild to me that the buyer was going to be paying approximately $800 extra in fees. At the same time I also saw pieces going for amazing prices: couches for $10 and dining sets for $25 to resellers who came prepared with trucks and trailers.

Japanese hand painted tea cups. Sold for less than $5

If you want to be treated with no consideration this is the place. If I could give zero stars I would give zero stars. Beware!

Please be advised when choosing Rebecca for doing an estate sale with. She is an AMAZING…read moresalesperson which includes getting your business. It was pretty much a slam dunk hiring her due to talking herself up, what services would be provided and so on. When the time came for her staff to set up, I stayed out of her way. No dropping in, texts or emails to make sure everything was ok, and that was hard for it was all my mom's possessions just months after she had passed away, so of course the sentimental piece was very difficult. I stayed back and let the "professional" take care of this very important job. After the 3-day sale was over, I did text a few days after that just inquiring how it went and the timeline of the "accounting". She rudely dismissed me and told me whenever she got to it because she had another big job to do. Trying to keep my motions intact and not respond that her job doing my mom's house was important, maybe not to her, but to me. Then it came for payment. 10 DAYS passed from when she "sent" the check to receive it! This was a local address that it was being sent to and in fact, she could have had us pick up but I honestly didn't think she even had cut one yet. When I addressed this, she said she wasn't sure when she mailed it out, because again, she was on another huge job and her last customer said it took 8 days for them to receive their pay. Please understand that the money was only a part of the issue, it was the fact when you are dealing with a VERY sensitive issue as a loss of a loved one and the one professional that you would think would have compassion would answer texts and not blow the customer off would show a little empathy. And not to mention that she did get 33% of the proceeds! Please do your due diligence when choosing someone to do such an important, sensitive job.

Went to one of their estate sales in Elbert this year. Many of the kitchen items were still in the…read morecabinets or under tables and were "not yet priced" which I found shocking. I learned this bc I saw other patrons digging through the cabinets and when I looked under a table, I found some red tea cups I thought were super cute. A tall woman with short hair snapped at me that they were not priced or available yet. So I asked if she could take a moment and price them right then (she seemed happy that the other older couple were digging.) She looked me up and down and said she couldn't do that and they were probably going to be quite expensive. I felt very dismissed and judged. I went home and messaged the estate sale on fb asking about the cups. She did reply to me later and the set of 8 cups and saucers were priced at $24 for all. So apparently I look like I can't afford $24 for teacups. I've been going to yard sales and estate sales since I was a small child (many of them north of Chicago too!) and have never been treated like that nor have I seen professionally run estate sales with unpriced and unavailable items sitting out. Terrible professionalism. Sadly unprepared. Just bc you e been doing a job for 35+ years doesn't mean you are good at it.

Jo has a clientele of buyers that far exceeds any other estate company, because of that you have the opportunity to sale much more than in an auction or yard sale. Everyone always thinks their stuff is worth much more than is received, but to find sellers yourself, clean everything, invite and open the sale, clean up after, and take to charity is very expensive. No one could hire a company to do that for less than 80 percent in true costs. I have used auction companies in Colorado Springs and Canon City, and both produced far less than Keepsakes. Even Ebay will take more than 28 percent, and you will do all the work. Each item will take you a minimum of 1 hour to process in total. I am happy to have these folks help me every time. If you do the math, say, my stuff is worth $10,000 and you get $5000, you have saved money, hassles and time in the end. Consider your travel costs, eating out, exhaustion and having your family hassle you, and think about what that is worth.

But we were there to at least keep somewhat of an eye on what was going on. We knew that she didn't like the owners dropping by during the sales she held but I did it anyway. The second time, we used her because we had to make an unexpected move out of state. I had boxed and sealed all of the things that were to be moved later and labeled them "Move." They were left in the garage. She was instructed to sell only the loose items that had not been sealed. What happened was that she opened all the boxes from the garage and sold the contents for almost nothing. We lost items that were worth thousands of dollars - like an antique Chinese emperor's robe. She must have basically given everything away. Our entire take from the majority of a 3600 sq. ft. house - furnishings and other contents, was under $2500!! What we ended up with when the moving truck came was heartbreaking. We had the lids for a lot of our cookware, but not the pots. We had all of the worthless stuff that we would have given away, if we'd had time to better organize. The only thing left of any value was our bedroom set. EVERYTHING else was gone. Sadly, there was nothing we could do about it. We didn't catalog the items because they had been packed to move and put out of sight. I just wish that there was a way to put multiple angry, red, negative stars.
