After a fall at the assisted living facility our mom was at she was placed at Rose Arbor. The staff there were all very kind and helped us go through the last days of mom's life. Every day they provided ADL care and would reposition her during the day. My sister and I stayed overnight and were made to feel welcome and as comfortable as we could be. After mom passed we were able to stay as long as we needed to and the staff showed compassion and spent time with us answering questions and filling in the blanks for us. The people that work in hospice care are a blessing to families during such a difficult time. read more

Abysmal nursing and no regard for patients or families. Insufficient medical capabilities for someone to pass comfortably. Only medical "treatment" is the overuse of morphine and benzo(s) to the point of accelerating death. Carelessness in medical care almost ended my loved ones life upon arrival. After my loved one's death the behavior of nursing staff was rude and nurses were disrespectful with their body. The experience of mine was the same as Darlene H.'s review in 2019. I highly suspect that the other reviews are fake. No one who is reviewing a hospice facility takes photos like those posted. Do not put your family member or your family through one of the toughest moments here. read more

It has taken me over a year to write this review, because grief is SO HARD. After a stroke, my 100-year old mother-in-law was lucky enough to head to Rose Arbor. There aren't a lot of options for hospice, and once you have been here, you will know this this is an extraordinary one. When you come in, right in front of you is a common area. You'll find birds, a piano, fireplace, bookshelves, and plenty of cozy places to sit and breathe. Next to that is a non-denominational chapel. There is a check in desk that is usually staffed by a volunteer. If you come after hours, you can use the door entry code given when your loved one arrives at hospice. There are two wings (right and left). There is a very low staff to patient ratio, which means that both the nurses and attendants are always available. This is so VERY reassuring. The rooms are large, with a medical bed, table and chairs, couch with pull out bed (which I availed myself of), reclining chair, bathroom, tv, radio/cd player with cds, and plenty of light. My MIL was at Rose Arbor for 13 days, and I have never seen such compassionate care. Every Single staff member checked on both her and us. For hospice is for an entire family, isn't it? Down our wing, and I assume on the other side, there is a family room, where you can watch tv, relax on a couch, sit at a dining table (this is where our intake session was); there is also a small sink area and fridge. Things that impressed me most were the much-appreciated empathy and care of the staff (in even the smallest things, like a glass of ice water, and in much bigger things, like enormous compassion when my MIL passed), the hand-made quilts on the beds, the soft pajamas, the daily bath and caretaking, and the ever-present sense of CARE. When my mother passed, I was allowed to stay in the room with her as long as I liked. When my husband and I finished saying goodbye to her, they had a wide variety of resources for us (which, actually, I wished I had looked at earlier), excellent care of her body, and compassion like I had never seen before. I cannot imagine the strength it takes to do this job, but I was so impressed by each and every staff member. This is, truly, their calling. Death is never easy, but in working with such compassionate caretakers, I felt that my mother's end of life was in the best of hands. After, there is free grief counseling available (both group and individual), and other methods to support families in their grief. And now I'm crying, because this is such a powerful, empathetic, loving space. If you have a loved one that needs hospice, look here first. It's truly a remarkable place. read more

Rose Arbor Hospice - Sitting room at Rose Arbor - Kalamazoo, Michigan

Knowing enough about Rose Arbor to have a review in mind implies that one knew someone who was within days or weeks of dying. My 90 year old mother, diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, wanted to die at home, and we gave it a try, but her incontinence and confusion and her risk of falling (because she wouldn't remain in bed) finally led us to ask Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan to move her to their facility in Kalamazoo. My mother was there for two weeks. She was awake and oriented the first week, but was eating and drinking less and less because she was struggling to swallow. Her pain was managed very well, probably because someone else was handling her medications. When she was at home she fell into believing that if she didn't take medication, she must then not be sick. And that increased her pain. The second week she became more confused, and then lapsed into sleeping almost all of the time. A subQ port was placed into her thigh the last few days so her pain meds could be administered. She passed away one evening while my girl & I sat near her bed. The facility and the staff are lovely. If I am ever within days or weeks of dying and need to go someplace, I would want to go to Rose Arbor. The staff were unflappable. Nothing could happen to cause them to lose their heads. They approached their work with my mother with competency and kindness. And the staff were doing their jobs while having to implement new rules and guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are per diem rates which can be adjusted. As of March '20, it was $265/day. We did not find the cost unreasonable considering the level of care my mother received. read more

This is a really hard one to write. I first became aware of Rose Arbor back when I was a journalist and I was commissioned to write a couple of pieces for a book of essays that Rise Arbor was publishing. At that time, I learned a lot about the facility and its mission, and immediately came to realize that if I ever needed hospice care, this would certainly be the place I would want to land. One of my dearest friends was recently cared for here, and I was one again so impressed by the staff and volunteers. Occasionally when you would walk in, someone would be playing the piano in the great room. Other times, you'd just hear the happy chirping of the birds in their large cage in there. The rooms are architecturally lovely, with lots of windows infusing the room with bright light on a sunny day. You'll see the squirrels defying gravity on the bird feeder outside the window. The facility and its staff offer comfort both to the patients and their loved ones. My friend got a bed-bath daily during her stay, and the nurses were very much on top of making sure she was comfortable at all times. The couch in her room folded out to a bed, and someone stayed the night with her every day. When she passed, friends and family were given the whole day to come visit and say goodbye, since her wishes were to be cremated so there would be no opportunity for a visitation at the funeral home. We are all just gutted. Absolutely wrecked. But we do deeply appreciate the staff at Rose Arbor for being there for our loved one in her final days. I did notice that the sign in book was primarily guests coming to see my friend, which made me quite sad for the other occupants. I inquired about bringing my chihuahua into visit as a comfort animal and was told they are definitely very much in need of therapy dogs right now. When my heart is just a little bit more healed, I plan to sign him up for those classes. If you have a sweet creature who might provide some comfort to those nearing the end of their lives, I recommend you reach out to Rose Arbor about this as well. read more

My mom passed away at this facility. While I felt the care was good, I was mortified by how business-like the staff was when she died. We were told we needed to be out within 8 hours(this was 9:30 pm), and were offered NO grief counseling or pastoral care support at that time. Not even a cart to pack her belongings, food or flowers onto. So there we were, packing everything while in tears, with my 90 year old father, and my mother's body lying there...only one nurse came back to express condolences.
