Friday night dinner and drinks, Saturday afternoon rugby or football, affordable weekday meals - The Rose & Crown is good for absolutely anything, and my PGCE course mates and I are sometimes in there multiple times a week. A branch of Flaming Grill, the menu is consistently excellent and very reasonably priced. The challenge meals including the "bin lid" are hilarious to watch somebody try to eat alone, and ridiculously cheap to share. Each day of the week comes with it's own deal, including our personal favourite, £2 dessert Friday. The apple crookie and the cookie dough cheesecake are to die for. Their steaks and burgers are always cooked to perfection and portion sizes are generous. The piggy burger is a personal favourite of mine. The service is always polite, friendly and efficient, although most of the staff members don't exactly have a memory for faces, and still ID us despite seeing us every Friday since September!
My most recent visit was in a group of 6 on a Friday evening. It was busy, and we were apologetically warned that there was 40 minute wait for food - however, we only actually waited 20. My scampi and chips was delicious and perfectly cooked, with lovely tartare sauce, and my fiancee's steak was exactly as rare and tender as she wanted it. She is not eating carbs at the moment, and they happily swapped her chips and vegetables for salad with a side of salad. (rather her than me!) Things only went up from there when some bottles of cider were found with badly damaged labels, and were offered to us at 2 for £4 - cheaper than the supermarket! Can't say fairer than that. read more
