I give it 3 stars for effort of the staff. When you go to Tulum it's like you want this otherworldly jungle, unplugged experience and this was more like a Vegas in the middle of the jungle. Not to say it was as flashy as a Vegas place but it seemed out of place in this paradise. This is the kind of place that would be fun in Playa Del Carmen. Mixed drink was ok. The bread was ok. We came here for dinner 2 nights in a row. :) We got the pork that was recommended by our waiter and it was soooo good with the spicy mashed potatoes. Also, there was a desert that was definitely a show stopper :) If you come visit here this place is a must try!! And some of the best cocktails I've had. Went here on last night in town after walking by it multiple times daily. Shouldn't have waited - this place is great. A fine dining experience you can wear shorts to. Their bar looks great and they have a cocktail mixologist at an adjacent station - I felt bad that all I could manage to drink was a soda. The menu is daunting in its selection, and the night we went the specials made choosing even more difficult. Portions are huge. We split a mushroom appetizer thing that our waiter recommended as well as a contemporary take on the classic "wedge" salad. They were both delicious. I opted for a fresh Caribbean lobster tail for dinner despite being tempted by the steaks they brought along with the lobster to the table to help you decide. My girlfriend got the prawns. Fantastic. The service was excellent as well, definitely fine-dining caliber. The waiter did an excellent job at both engaging with us as well as running the myriad of additional servers that attend to your needs. Also noticed that the owner or manager was making the rounds as well. The decor is extra cool and I'd write more but I think you get my drift. 5 star experience all around, and I really can't wait to go back. Came here on a rainy night due to the good reviews and the fact that it has a solid roof overhead. Our server was friendly and genuinely helpful in trying to figure out how much food to order -- we had selected a number of appetizers to share as our entire meal, but it turns out some of them are enormous, and we cut our list down to just a couple. The meal started off well with complimentary popovers with cheese, as well as some colorful chips and salsas, all of which were delicious. However, then the rest of the food arrived, and we were underwhelmed. The empanada was quite nice, flakey and with ok flavor, but nothing about it was memorable. The salad was WAY too sweet -- to the point where we just didn't finish it. It has some interesting components that tasted good individually, but together it just tasted like candy, and was not at all what we were looking for. Lastly, the scallops were nice and fresh, but were drenched in some sort of mayo, which just added a heaviness and even more soft textures to an already soft dish. The jalapeños on top were nice. The meal wasn't too expensive, especially for Tulum standards -- I think this is actually pretty good value given the portion sizes of the appetizers (we didn't order any mains). We were recommended this place as a "place to have dinner and drinks". The place was blasting the music so loud that you could not speak to anyone at the table or the waiters. The tables are so dark that you can hardly see your food. The waiters are told to "up your order" with their own recommendations that cost double or triple what you are ordering. When I asked for a suggestion the waiter wanted to sell me a drink. Luckily I asked how much and he said $50 dollars! I live in Miami. I'm used to high prices, but $50 for a drink? Come on! This is Mexico! A Tequila drink should not cost $50 USD. That's taking advantage of people and basically a tourist trap. The food was ok and not what you expect at this price point. At the very end, when I was paying they asked me for a tip and I said 10%, the girl processing my credit card got very aggressive and started with a harsh tone questioning my tip amount asking if the service was ok! Very disrespectful! Very unprofessional! This is Mexico, tips are not customary. 10% on a $400 bill for three people is plenty. I do not recommend this place! read more

Today is my birthday and I am so happy I chose Rosa Negra to celebrate! The vibe was fun and once the sun started going down all the beautiful lights came on. They surprised me with some flashy candles a piece of cake. For my meal I got the mushroom risotto, not my usual choice but I saw someone else say it was good. WOW were they right. One of the best meals I've had at a restaurant, slap your mama good! My boyfriend for the 8 tacos and said they were pretty dang good too. Everything is pretty pricey, but that is to be expected for that location. I would definitely come back again if I wasn't leaving tomorrow. We enjoyed Rosanegra so much while visiting Tulum last month that we came back this month for my birthday! The portions are very generous, the appetizers are delicious, and the fresh fish was excellently prepared (try the Nigerian tiger prawns), but the star of dinner was the incredibly well seasoned and perfectly cooked skirt steak! We could have had 2 of these but wanted to try more dishes on the outstanding menu with influences from all around South and Latin America. This newer restaurant is a cross between fine dining (in a casual chic kind of way) and a fun club like ambiance including a DJ (but no dancing) and this gives Rosanegra a great vibe. Whatever you do, no matter how long your dinner takes, SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT! Wow! Rosa Negra was a top tier restaurant! For starters, they were very thorough with their safety precautions and health screening before you were even seated. This place is all about exception customer service. Rodolpho and Francisco were fantastic, so much fun and really made our experience one to remember. The food was flavorful and plated so nicely. I ordered the rib eye steak and it was so juicy and well seasoned! And the drinks were strong. Oh boy! We literally were served by the busser, server came to our table a couple of times our order's we're screwed up and got served complimentary drinks only to have the server ten seconds later and said it was a mistake. The food here is 5 Stars worthy. Let me start with that! The ambiance is soooo not my style (insanely loud music, "entertainment", very beautiful women awkwardly dancing to make the place seem cool. Blah). However service and food = chef's kiss. The ceviche was amazing, solid guacamole, and they offer popovers with salsa at the beginning of your meal. The star of the show: I ordered a trout that was to die for. Who has ever said that about trout?? Husband got the octopus which was a HUGE serving. The drink menu left a lot to be desired, nothing very interesting, super standard assortment of margaritas. Unfortunately Tulum + cocktails = melted ice and lots of condensation on the glass anyway. After a week in Akumal Bay and Tulum, this was the highlight of our trip. After stopping for impromptu apps and cocktails before dinner, we fell in love with the menu, service, and food. At the end of our trip, we got a last minute reservation and were floored by the experience. The food and drinks were unbelievably good and the service went above and beyond on every level. We would recommend the gin and tonics made by Mar, the grilled octopus, and the steak. I came in with a group of friends for her bachelorette. This whole establishment seemed like they were out to scam us. Firstly we had reservations and they told us we had to wait and head to the bar. At the bar we were charged $25 USD per vodka shot. I feel as if they are charging whatever they want trying to scam us. Then there were two other people (one woman with curly brown hair, one short brown haired man) trying to scam us saying that we took drugs from them and that we owed $100 USD when we did not take any drugs what's so ever. They even followed my friend into the bathroom and pushed/shoved him around. This is absolutely unacceptable. We notified staff and no one seemed to care. Honestly it seemed like the whole staff was in on it. As a tourist I am letting you know this is absolutely unacceptable and terrible business. If you want tourists to keep coming to Rosa Negra you as the business owner/representative cannot allow this corruption occur. I will be posting that this establishment is a scam and for other tourists to avoid it. We are extremely disappointed in how we were treated as tourists in Tulum. This is many of our first time in Mexico as well and this is extremely discouraging. read more

We ate at this restaurant twice during our stay in tulum . The first time was so amazing we needed to eat there again. The second time was even better. The food was amazing . Largest beets I've ever ordered or eaten ! The colossal octopus was AMAZING ! huge portion , cooked just right! The baked Alaska was a great show item and was even more delicious than we imagined . Victor was a great waiter and explained the entire menu beautifully. He asked if we had any food allergies and when we were cold (70 degrees out and sunburns) , he brought us hot lemon water and blankets . AMERICANS BEWARE! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PLACE! My son (mid-20s) was there with his gf and another couple late at night. The gents went to the bathroom and were followed in and ambushed by three locals who locked the door and threatened them with a broken bottle. They fought and got out after taking a pretty severe beating (broken nose, fractured orbital, broken hand). THE STAFF REFUSED TO HELP THEM IN ANY WAY!! We didn't order that because he was the only one in our party that likes it. The waiter would not take responsibility for his mistake and basically said it is what it is. The tomahawk steak we ordered was pure fat and not worth a penny of what we paid. If this was a club, it would be a 5 star review but as far as food and service, it ranks below.
