This is our first year at Peabody after transferring from Ellwood Elementary, and although some of…read morethe staff is very kind unfortunately our experience has been deeply disappointing, particularly in how special needs students are supported. My child has special needs and has experienced bullying at this school. Instead of consistently addressing the bullying itself, there have been instances where my child has been excluded from activities because of behavior connected to his disability. When disability-related behavior is treated only as a discipline issue rather than something that requires understanding and appropriate support, it creates a very difficult environment for a child who is already struggling. Bullying also appears to be an issue at this school, and in my experience it has not always been addressed as seriously as it should be. Before winter break, my child was the one sitting outside the vice principal's office crying after being bullied. As a parent, seeing your child in that position is heartbreaking and extremely concerning. Communication has also become a challenge. My child works with a paraeducator throughout the school day, and I previously tried to communicate respectfully about how his day was going and to better understand some of the consequences he was receiving that didn't seem to take his disability into account. After attempting to advocate for my child in this way, I was informed that I am no longer allowed to communicate directly with the paraeducator who is with him one-on-one all day. Being cut off from that communication makes it extremely difficult to understand what my child is experiencing at school or how to support him at home. I did not write this lightly. As a parent, I have tried to advocate respectfully and work with the school, but the situation has continued to be concerning. I expected a school with Peabody's reputation to have a stronger understanding of how to support students with disabilities and to take bullying more seriously. Every child deserves to feel safe, included, and supported at school. That has not been our experience here, and I hope the school takes these concerns seriously and works toward improving support and communication with families of special needs students.
