Now this is a good spot. Right up from Pixels Alley, is Mr. Wow's. Cozy and dark inside, the bar…read moregreets you so welcoming and delightful to look at. The drinks menu changes every so often, but they always keep you fascinated by the quirky names. It's very spacious inside. The outdoor seating is covered and protected from the elements, and equipped with space heaters. Sitting here gives you a nice overlooking view of the busy Smith Street. One of the coolest things about Mr Wows is that it is connected to Pixels Alley. So play some arcade games downstairs and have a drink (they have their own bar thing going on). The head upstairs, and play some board games, or pool or that game where you throw a disk. Enjoy the venues and what they have to offer.

Like a fun younger cousin to Panama, Mr Wow's is another upstairs large open space looking out onto…read moreSmith St below, but where Panama's focus is on the restaurant and classy drinks space, Mr Wow is - as the name suggests - focused on fun and games! (And despite what I once thought after a few drinks, it's definitely *not* called Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium. That's an average movie with Dustin Hoffman.) You might not get to use any of them on a busy Friday or Saturday night, but the free bocce pitch, and tennis table room is a really fun way to spend a few hours - just remember to not get too involved in the games to the point where your beer gets warm! Even if you're not playing with them, you might be busy dodging ping-pong and errant bocce balls if you're hanging nearby - especially as people get a little more 'jovial' into the night, so best stay on the other side of the place if that doesn't sound like your kind of fun. There's sometimes free popcorn on offer, but seems they only fire that up on the busy nights. Only a couple of beers on tap, but some cocktails or bottled drinks are also available. You generally have to make your own fun when going out anywhere, but Mr Wow's certainly tries to lend a helping hand.

Don't you just love the hidden bars and restaurants of Melbourne? Down cobbled lanes and behind…read moreunmarked doors, these kinds of places make our city special. The Kelvin Club can be put in the same "hidden" category, as most people don't know that it exists. Right in the centre of the city and down a little lane called Melbourne Place, The Kelvin Club has been hosting very-proper gatherings for 150 years now. A private members club, you can only get in here when invited by a member or if you buy tickets to one of their public events or concerts. As a member I get access to great networking and tasting events, can bring three guests in for drinks, a game of billiards or a meal. On Wednesday they have a $15 steak dinner which is exceptional value and a relaxed way to catch up with friends in an environment that feels like a second-home. My favourite part? The old fashioned house rules that state one must be dressed appropriately to access certain areas of the club and that if you answer your phone in the public bar, you have to buy a round of drinks for all! LOVE IT.

Tweed trousers and a hunting rifle and a smoking jacket and a brass sextant and a spyglass and a walrus mustache and some kind of historically significant achievement. I didn't know clubs like this still existed, but I'm sure glad they do, and I wish we had something equivalent in Sydney. It's like walking back in time to a place when men were gentlemen and women were glamorous and everything was simple and Gatsby-like without any of the muck afflicting the world today and you can sit by a roaring fire with a snifter of brandy and discuss Jonothan Worthley-Smythe's latest New Zealand expedition. If the hipsters ever find this place its all over.

Well, there are some that have a rather classy atmosphere, which I do tend to like, but this basically isn't one of them. I guess it has a lot to do with not being much of a gambler, or at least one who thinks they can win money by playing games of chance. However, it isn't a bad place to go and watch the football, and they do have a decent beer on tap, as well as quite a few bays, but still, it's not one of those places I make an effort to visit.
