This review is regarding the fish and chips. Rogacki has lots of options to purchase meat and fish. I honestly found them quite expensive and just from the looks they weren't looking super promising, but maybe thats also due to their old interior that makes it look like a trashy market. The food to eat is served in a cantine style, almost like Nordsee but better. Overall here are the pros of Rogacki: + Its fast (cantine style) + Its cheap (3,30 EUR/100g of grilled sea salmon) + Its better tasting and better quality than Nordsee Now here's what I didn't like besides the interior. The Remouladen sauces disappointed, regardless with you take it with or without the garlic. The sea lachs was rich in fish but the overall taste and freshness was not promising. Yes I got fish for a fair price but I didn't fully enjoyed it. The fish are fried, not in a nice fish and chips beer batter way but more thin-crusted. read more

Feast on your eyes on the many counters this fine establishment has to offer. They've got a designated section for everything, of course. Poultry and seafood by the pound, sold to you fresh and ready for you to take home, or cooked there if you choose to dine in. If that's not your thing, there's plenty to choose from at the cafeteria-style end with ready made specials of the day (think schnitzel, potatoes, or pan fried fish) and the dozens of side dish counters where you also order by the pound. We made a full circle about 4 times before wrapping our heads around what we wanted to try (there's THAT much to choose from). In the end, we got a bit of everything from each counter. We ordered a few ounces of potatoes and different salads with herring, a few slices of smoked fish, and two servings of salmon and mawhich was served with boiled potatoes and some heavenly sauces. read more

On my last visit to my brother, we went to this local fish market for lunch. My brother in law specifically wanted me to try their fish soup so we each ordered soup and also had oysters and a glass of wine. The soup was excellent! I'm thoroughly disappointed at my FIRST experience of dining in Berlin on Saturday, 24/3/2018. Racism/discrimination exists strongly even at a restaurant that receives much applause, recognition and public attention from the internationally acclaimed Andrew Zimmern and others. Unfortunately, after landing in the late afternoon well past lunch time and heading to Rogacki with excitement to try their seafood (having researched and hearing so many good things about this place) straight after the airport with luggage in tow, I was met with the most unpleasant experience to date. I immediately saw how popular the green tabled place and counters were (located in the middle of the market), and found a spot at the counter. I plopped onto the chair and patiently waited for the 2 female servers and/or the male cook to take my order. The German lady next to me was nice enough to see that I wasn't getting helped and handed me a menu and asked for an English one for me (which this place doesn't have-no problem). After perusing the menu, I was set on ordering the shrimp penne dish. The servers clearly saw me. I waited and tried to wave them down with "bitte" and "hallo" and at times they would tell me "ein moment", but never came back to me, only reserving their attentiveness to the other customers by refilling their wines and bread basket. I first thought that they were trying to finish the other orders/service the other customers that came before me first, as this is what they should do; however, when I spotted some newcomers at the counter, both servers serviced them first immediately and would quickly pass me without even batting an eye at me. Even the German customers sitting to the right and left of me noticed they were ignoring me and tried to get the server's attention by speaking German to them and they were both blatantly ignored. It was clear that they did not want to serve me and if anyone knows me, I am quite possible one of the top 3 most patient and polite person you will meet. I sat there for 30 minutes dumbfounded and finally left feeling defeated and pretty stupid for just sitting there, starving and never getting any help at the end. I've experienced some poor service, but never to the extent of being completely ignored and not serviced (I mean- isn't this typically reserved for people who are rude, potentially dangerous and obnoxious?). I can't help, but think of what reason they would not service me for except for the fact that I am not German/of the right ethnicity- please note that I also was the only Asian at this place at the time. My first experience of dining in Berlin has disappointedly revealed to me that racism is still pretty much prevalent in any and all parts of the world. This is foodie heaven. Massive, ancient delicatessen with all the classic European specialties. The fish counter is almost a city block by itself. Tons of sausages and wursts. I had Blutwurst (blood sausage), served with kraut and mash from the little cafeteria inside the deli. Definitely worth the diversion if on the way to the airport. I didn't expect to stop into Rogocki it's five minutes walking distance from the palace in Charlottenburg and I didn't make it to the palace but I made it into probably the best delicatessen/market in Berlin. Everything is fresh and the locals go there and pick out their fish or sausages and it's prepared on the spot by a chef I was the only non German there that afternoon. I wanted either some potato salad or this corn and vegetables in what looked like a ketchup salsa with my sausages so the chef bartered with them and I paid one euro and she put it in a container that I put on my plate after the sausages were cooked! I ordered the mozzarella spinach bratwurst and the chef suggested some italion white wine! Probably the best meal I had in Germany you should plan on stopping in then take a walk to the castle it's only five minutes away! read more

In the world of Delicatessens, Rogacki is one of the great ones in the world. But this is not Kosher Deli by any means. It is straight up German, Nordic, Teutonic grub, all smoked meats, sausages, pickled fish, friend things, cured things, things on bread, and everything that you could imagine a non )ewish deli would have to offer. And it stands up to multiple visits. And one good thing is that you can see most of the food in the food cases and on the steam table. Pick with you eyes and your nose. If you don't like it, then pick something else. There is so much to choose from that one could go there 100 times and still not try everything. And it is all good... and all traditional. I always seem to end up in the East side of Berlin when visiting, it's where my friends are, where the bars are and where the cheap food and thrifting is. However ff you can make the trek out West to try the food here you won't be disappointed. It's literally right next to Bismarckstraße stop on the U2. So easy to get to. PRO tip - - Get a Kilo of the potato salad. Get a Kilo of the fresh fried fish. Maybe don't get a Kilo of the pickled cabbage but get 500g! You can pick the fish you want. Eat it all. This is your starter. Eat at the standing tables. Rejoice. Now you are slightly sated head to the smoked fish area. You can order small amounts, 50g even. Get some smoked eel, get some rye bread, this is your main course. SO GOOD! There are about 20 different types of pickled Mackerel in styles from all around the world. Personally like the maatjesharing as it is the most like the sushi preparation of saba/sanma. If you like salads in the russian/east european style you are in your element. Tons of chopped salads in creamy dressings. Tons or smoked and cured meats, tons or great things around the world. This is the West German equivalent of a food hall in a high end Japanese department store, minus all the sweets. Everything here is great. I always make a point of taking the people who live in Berlin but have never been before and after they are like, 'what was I doing with my life before this?' and look really sad that they had a time in their life without Rogacki. I tell them that now it is always going to be in their life as it has been around since 1932 and won't be closing anytime soon. It may look daunting this place but just point, forget about what the guidebooks say the servers do understand english, at least my pointing and english number amounts in terms of weight. They aren't going to wax lyrical about the provenance of the fish but who cares? You know it is good already. One word of warning, this is old school West Berlin, you have to hold the heavy doors open for all the old ladies coming in and out otherwise you will get a stare down. It is a bit of a time warp but it is taking you back to a better more wholesome time, a time where people held doors for old ladies and ate smoked fish. read more

We love going there on a weekend to eat. We also get exquisite cheeses there for our dinner parties and fish for our dinners. Rogacki is our neighborhood place and like a paradise for foodies. It is a large hall/food market with tables and different food sections/counters. They can be split up in the following sections: Bakery Cheese Sausages/lunch meat Meat Fresh fish Smoked fish Salads Wine Canteen area Wow, I hope I did not forget one. But as one can see there are many options! Be aware that this place is def. far from being affordable but provides great quality and has probably anything one dreams of. (But if you are smart you get your Brötchen next door for a lot less and instead of taking large portions of the salads offered, take just a few grams that way you can purchase many different salads on a low budget.) The weekends are very busy and during those times they often have samples and one can also try some wine from not so pushy sales reps. You can browse, pick your food from the food counters, or get warm meals, stand at a table and eat. We take our 5 year old daughter there, because she loves to see the fresh fish swimming in the tanks and she loves the sausages there. However, the place caters to the adult crowds and children will find it hard to eat there because of the tall tables, made for adults. They do have highchairs but 5 year old kids are not really made for them (we made some exceptions at times ;)) However, they have a few tables on the outside all year long and during the warm days one can sit outside. This place is def. a must and even if you do not care for fish, there will be something for everyone. And even if you want to browse--it´s a pleasure! TIP: This place accepts cash and you pay at each counter. Legendary Rogacki was spotted for us by my sharp-eyed parents before their 1st visit to Berlin. This historic deli has been featured on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" and is a West Berlin institution. There is a lunch counter that is always busy, plus the different sections of breads, meats, seafood, cheese, and pastries. Bourdain declared this his best meal in Germany and it's true you can find any German food your heart desires. Tourists wander in frequently, but it is best to just spot a local and trail them. I didn't know exactly what to expect when I came to this Berlin institution. I had images of big breasted beer maids and a lot of toasting...too many movies I guess. The only massive breasts were those on the roasted chickens and that was actually okay with me. There is a huge selection of roasted, grilled, pickled, and raw foods but I thought the highlight was the seafood grill located near the middle. You can order white wine and watch the show as they cook your food in heaps of butter. SO SO good. The fish is fresh and cooked to perfection at a fraction of the price of Ka De We! What a blast from the past! This place has not changed a bit in- what? 30 years? The brand color is this hideous green. Kindly albeit strict looking matronly women serve you from behind glass counters (I am not sure but I would venture a guess that they are wearing rubber soled clogs). There are even fish tanks at the back from which you can ask them to fish you out your dinner and kill it for you. They do smoked fish, huge selection of raw chicken and meat. You can eat standing up. This place is so real! And there is good quality here, they have survived for 80 years without updating their look so clearly they know what they are doing.
