The brisket here is phenomenal. Could be the best I have ever had. It's so tender and the bark is just so smokey and delicious. The only reason I am not giving this place 5 stars is their limited side menu. They only have baked beans, green beans and potato salad. None of which I'm particularly keen on. Can't I get some mac and cheese or collard greens? Also they only have white bread. I get the whole backyard BBQ theme, a lot of people like the white bread, but I'm a cornbread guy. Really good stuff. We spotted their brightly-lit truck one night on a street corner off N. Lake in Pasadena and we decided to get some ribs, since we hadn't had BBQ in a while. The folks running the truck were very nice and answered all of our questions regarding food allergies. We ordered a rib meal that consisted of 5 ribs, bread and delicious baked beans. Since my girlfriend has a chili pepper/bell pepper allergy (which goes as far as to seasonings and rubs that contain trace amounts - BBQ sauce is always a danger zone for her), they were able to make the ribs plain and put the BBQ sauce on the side. Turns out that was a good idea, since they mentioned the BBQ sauce had a "kick" to it - which usually means addition of hot sauce; I tasted it and was pretty amazed by it. All in all, it was very worth the impulse and I would definitely go back again if I could find them in the right place. read more

Very good brisket sandwhich here. They were out of the ribs until another hour or so, so I decided to try out the brisket sand which recommended by the cashier. The sun was bearing down on my bare feet as I waited outside the food truck for down-home ribs, but there were no flies or mosquitoes (ya gotta love LA!). So I had great expectations, and I wanted to match Rodney's ribs up to that hickory smoked flavor of Memphis, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The ribs looked good, but they were on the cold side and I didn't want to dry them out by reheating. The coleslaw was on the bland side, but I enhanced the flavor with paprika (note to Rodney). There is no doubt that the greater Los Angeles area has excellent food. Anywhere you go you can get a great meal and sometimes even for a great price. In the San Gabriel Valley the cuisine is excellent and continues to improve as non-chain restaurants begin to open up in various areas (especially Pasadena). However the San Gabriel Valley there is a distinctive lack of excellent BBQ. In an area where you can dumplings at almost any time of day, Thai food at the drop of the hat, an excellent burger, any kind of beer you want, and some of the best Italian and Mexican food, it's amazing how impossible it is to find excellent BBQ. Enter Rodney's! No over the top store front, no promise of excellent candlelight ambiance, just straight ahead perfect BBQ. This IS the place you need to be if you need a meat and BBQ sauce fix. It's like being in Texas except you in Southern California (this is a good thing!). MAIN DISHES: A Rodney's presents all the basics of BBQ. Tri-tip, ribs, etc. You want it, they got it. Their BBQ sauce is also exceptional as it is not too sweet but not overall bland either. It seems to perfectly complement to the smoked meat. If you are having a hang or are with a friend go with the full rack of beef ribs, $30 straight up and you're in rib heaven. These are fall off the bone ribs and what's better is they cut them up for you already so they are ready to eat, no screwing around with bones just pick em up and go. There are also several types of sandwiches that don't try to be pretentious, just what you need when you want it. They will also be getting their sausages straight from Texas shortly which as anyone who knows BBQ can attest is a good thing. SIDES: B+ The potato salad is the ideal companion for your beef extravaganza. It's not too saucy but also doesn't feel like you are eating just a potato. The fries look good (didn't have em, how can you pass up potato salad). AMBIANCE: C+ It's a trailer on the side of the street next to the exit from the 24 hour fitness parking structure. Don't kid yourself, this is not a show up, sit down and eat. This is a grab and go kinda joint. Although it's not unusual to see people sitting in their cars and eating. STAFF: A+ I've never seen a group of people so happy to be working in a trailer selling meat. These guys are super friendly and even more important up front about what they like and don't like to eat. That being said, not sure where there isn't to like on the menu! DRINKS: B They have a soda fountain on the side of the truck. Not much else to say here. Overall Rodney's is exactly what the SGV and greater LA have needed since the heartbreaking demise of the BBQ King in DTLA. Second time cold, gamey ribs, funky smelling bread (looked and felt fresh, but something was wrong). Every time out of something early in the day, or having to come back til anything was ready. All cuts fattier than I think of as normal for low-and-slow bbq. I'm open to this being chef's preference; served hot I might have felt differently. I drive by Tangier in Los Feliz on the way home from work every day. About that time every day I get the barbecue munchies from the scents wafting out of the restaurant. By the time I get to the 5, it has usually passed and I come home to my eggs and toast or grilled turkey patties. Well, today it didn't pass and I was determined to get some barbecue! I saw that they had a couple of possible locations so I set out on an adventure to see if I could find one. WooHoo, the first place I looked, there it was! I'd already decided what I wanted to try, so my friend and I ordered two plates, one rib tips and the other brisket. They were out of green beans (boo) so we got potato salad and baked beans. Took the plates back to my place and chowed down. Amazing! It was so good, even the bread and I don't even usually eat white bread. The price was fair ($24 dollars stuffed two people). This is the second time I've tried their dinners and they were equally delicious. We got three, the brisket which was so tender you could cut it with the plastic fork. Cole slaw was fresh and tasty. We got the Rodney's special which are ribs and a side, we got green beans. They were also fall off the bone tender with good flavor and the green beans were flavorful without being salty which many are. Our final dish was the rib tips that I might prefer over the ribs. They are easy to eat because they're cut up but still meaty. Lots of nice crispy bits too. If you want ribs but don't want to get your hands messy, order the tips. Plates come in a paper container (YAY!) with a napkin, fork and spoon and a slice of bread. My only suggestion would be to ask for extra napkins unless you get the tips. read more
