Boy was I ever lucky to stumble upon Susan, estate planning issues* are her specialty. My dad is a tough customer and a cheapskate, getting him to even agree to update their estate plan took some work, but once he met Susan he was sold. Susan knows her stuff, but is not the least bit intimidating or overbearing, which is important since many find it difficult to talk about death or disability. After she made her decision when he had ankle bracelets on and going through AA, the gal though he was okay. History repeats it self. Do not trust her. After my husband got his ankle bracelets off he went off the deep end. It was bad. Really bad. I got a notice of relocation not from her but from attorneys and he eventually committed so many crimes after his bracelets went off and died this month. Angel should be ashamed of herself thinking that the children would be okay. Do your research friends. She only knows law and not psychiatristry. I hate to be mean but I would not want anyone to have to have her as a GAL. Go back to school. As an educator of 26 years and now a doctor, I can finally write that I am applauded.

But in my life, I've crossed paths with many women who have - probably more women than I even realize. Sobering stats (from the CAWC website): * reports indicate that between 1 and 4 million women are assaulted by an intimate each year. * domestic violence crosses ethnic, racial, generational, sexual, religious and socioeconomic lines * nearly 1 in 3 women will experience at least one physical assault by their partner in their lifetime. * left untreated, domestic violence is the single largest cause of injury to women in the U.S. * is responsible for more than one-third of all female murder victims * touches one-fourth of all American families I learned about CAWC years ago from a woman who worked as a volunteer there. Its stated mission: "...committed to ending domestic violence. Using a self-help empowerment approach, we provide shelter for women and children, and counseling, advocacy and a 24-hour hotline for people affected by domestic violence. We work for social change through education, service, collaboration and institutional advocacy." CAWC established Chicago's first 24-hour domestic violence hotline (773-278-4566). In 1979, it opened Greenhouse Shelter: the city's first safe refuge for battered women and their children.. Its web site says Greenhouse must turn away hundreds of women and children due to lack of space. In 2000, CAWC established the Humboldt Park Outreach Program, a comprehensive domestic violence services program. It also provides a range of domestic violence services at the Haymarket Center. There are different options if you want to support CAWC. You can train to be a volunteer. You can make a monetary donation. Or you can do what I do: periodically scour your house for items (or go and purchase items) that are on CAWC's wish list. If you live near Humboldt Park, this is a great place to donate goods that you no longer use or need, vs tossing it in the garbage, which ends up in a landfill.
