I'm a financial planner by trade and first met Susan when looking for someone to help my parent's update their estate planning documents. Boy was I ever lucky to stumble upon Susan, estate planning issues* are her specialty. My dad is a tough customer and a cheapskate, getting him to even agree to update their estate plan took some work, but once he met Susan he was sold. Susan knows her stuff, but is not the least bit intimidating or overbearing, which is important since many find it difficult to talk about death or disability. My experience with Susan went so well I recommended her to my former boss who was equally impressed with her knowledge and demeanor. We paired Susan with a lot of our clients in need of estate planning services, including those with non-traditional needs. Our clients raved at how patient, thorough, friendly, responsive, and reasonably priced she is. She was a lifesaver when I had a sensitive client emergency than required quick action and getting family members across numerous states on board with the plan. Susan has not only helped clients and family she has helped me personally when I decided I needed to practice what I preached and get my estate plan in order. Susan collected all of my information, had my documents drafted for review and later executed in a jiff. When it came time to re-title my condo Susan made the process quick and painless. I don't hesitate referring friends and family to her; I know she will treat them right, charge them a fair price, and look out for their best interests. * Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, re-titling of assets, probate issues, family partnerships, LLC's, and the like.

A 100th review calls for something special - I pick the Chicago Abused Women Coalition (CAWC). It…read moreis my great good fortune that I have not been in an abusive relationship. But in my life, I've crossed paths with many women who have - probably more women than I even realize. Sobering stats (from the CAWC website): * reports indicate that between 1 and 4 million women are assaulted by an intimate each year. * domestic violence crosses ethnic, racial, generational, sexual, religious and socioeconomic lines * nearly 1 in 3 women will experience at least one physical assault by their partner in their lifetime. * left untreated, domestic violence is the single largest cause of injury to women in the U.S. * is responsible for more than one-third of all female murder victims * touches one-fourth of all American families I learned about CAWC years ago from a woman who worked as a volunteer there. Its stated mission: "...committed to ending domestic violence. Using a self-help empowerment approach, we provide shelter for women and children, and counseling, advocacy and a 24-hour hotline for people affected by domestic violence. We work for social change through education, service, collaboration and institutional advocacy." CAWC established Chicago's first 24-hour domestic violence hotline (773-278-4566). In 1979, it opened Greenhouse Shelter: the city's first safe refuge for battered women and their children.. Its web site says Greenhouse must turn away hundreds of women and children due to lack of space. In 2000, CAWC established the Humboldt Park Outreach Program, a comprehensive domestic violence services program. It also provides a range of domestic violence services at the Haymarket Center. There are different options if you want to support CAWC. You can train to be a volunteer. You can make a monetary donation. Or you can do what I do: periodically scour your house for items (or go and purchase items) that are on CAWC's wish list. Click here to view this list: http://www.cawc.org/help/WishList.html Or you can attend a CAWC special event. Their main one is coming up Sat. April 14 at the downtown Marriott: Visions of Chocolate charity gala. Cocktails, silent auction, gourmet dinner, dancing - plus a spectacular chocolate buffet. A number of top chefs/pastry chefs donate their efforts to the event, which is $175 a ticket. Call 773-489-9081 X 23 for more information. The CAWC provides a desperately needed service to the Chicago community. To paraphrase that quote: "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." CAWC has been fighting evil for more than 25 years. It deserves all the help we can give.
