Copenhagen Free Walking Tours - Amalienborg Royal Square

We've been fans of the "free walking tour" concept ever since taking one for the first time in…read moreKraków. It's really a great way to take in the culture of the city that you're visiting while also familiarizing yourself with the area. We booked the "Grand Tour of Copenhagen" ahead of time to ensure a tour in English for that day. The tour can also be joined last minute depending on availability. The biggest draw is that the actual tour is free. You're just paying the gratuity to your guide at the end of it all. We met our guide at the steps of City Hall. Just look for the guides with bright green umbrellas. I say this because there are other free walking tours that meet up at similar locations within the square. Wayne checked us in and suggested that we take a look around inside City Hall before the start of the tour. It was a great suggestion as we probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise. It was a great introduction! Wayne was very informative throughout the tour. He pointed out things that we wouldn't have noticed right away. We learned about the culture, government, history, and even the language. He taught us all a few basic Danish words to help us with greeting people. He was great! It's a nice short tour that takes up only about 2.5 to 3 hours of your time. The pacing of the walk is perfect. There are cobblestone streets and bike lanes to navigate through, but otherwise it's an easy walk. Our tour ended at Amalienborg Palace. The only thing that would make the tour better is the timing of it. An early morning tour that ends right before the changing of the guard ceremony would be ideal. However, this might not be possible due to the time given after the tour for those with last minute questions or needing recommendations. That's totally understandable. Otherwise, it was time very well spent. Highly recommended!

First tip, book ahead. They will prioritize customers if you've booked so that they have a proper sized group. Second tip, don't go to the last tour of the day. I did that and unfortunately, it was a massive group of more than 50 for the English tour. This made for a less than ideal environment with too many people, too far from the tour guide and a slow progression through the city. I'm sorry to say that I left the group after the third stop. I still have high hopes for Sandemans and will be looking forward to using them when I get to Porto next month.

The tour started from a main attraction and took about 2h30. Our guide was not Danish but he knew a lot of cool and interesting facts about Copenhagen which made this experience much more interesting. If it's your first time in town and you are traveling solo this is a great way to meet people, discover Denmark's capital and main tourist attractions and, of course do some sightseeing. Don't forget to tip your guide accordingly to the experience you had. Their job is unpaid and they live off the tips they make with the tours. Hope Sandemans get to Brazil and other city capitals around the world soon - why not Stockholm guys? ;)

You can never be sure of the weather in Copenhagen and it was supposed to be sunny but wound up raining and cold. We asked for a refund and they said they don't give refunds even if it's raining. Had we known that we wouldn't have bought tickets in advance which you have to do if you want to get a boat on most days. How can you refuse refunds for boat rides that won't be bought by anyone else because it's raining? The first theft! We were told that they were watching the weather and the rain would stop in about 20 minutes but it never did. It got lighter for a short while and we saw other people with ponchos coming back. We'd spent almost $300 on the trip so rather than lose the money we decided to go out thinking the rain would let up, it didn't. So we asked for 3 of the ponchos we saw other people wearing. They said sure and pulled out three tiny packets of the thinnest cheapest plastic ponchos that didn't go past your butt and THEY CHARGED US $6 FOR EACH ONE!! The second theft! Talk about adding insult to injury these scumbags capitalize further on their non refundable boat rides by charging you more money for what is essentially the thinnest cheapest plastic garbage bags with a hole on the end and a hood that doesn't cover your head. Guarantee you these ponchos cost them about 30 cents a piece yet they charge the ridiculous sum. At the very least if you won't refund my money give me the crappy plastic poncho for free. Absolute scumbag move. On top of all that they hardly give you any instructions except forward, reverse and then tell you that if you hold the rudder slightly wrong the whole thing will pop out of the mechanism which it did multiple times when we were underway. Horribly unsafe. I can't believe this place has decent reviews on here or that it's still open. If you insist on going just please don't book in advance or you'll quite possibly have an experience as bad or worse than ours. And also if you want a better trip don't use a boat with hand rudder. They have other boats with steering wheels which are probably better but I bet if you turn them to far to the right the whole helm collapses! Thanks for ruining one of our 7 days in Copenhagen go boat! Hope you go out of business soon!
