I was visiting Merida for the first time for a friend's wedding! Because I don't know how to style my own hair, I was hoping to get it done before the event. My Spanish is embarrassing and I didn't know how to find a reputable salon in the area. When I found this one on yelp and tried booking a same-day appointment, they didn't show any availability until the following week. My husband and I were walking around the neighborhood and he suggested I stop in and ask if they had any openings. When I went inside, the salon was super clean, stylish, and welcoming, with comfortable chairs. The receptionist said, "Can you do it right now?" Yes! I was very happy to be seen at the last minute. Although my stylist didn't speak English, the receptionist did and he translated. I told them that my hair doesn't hold curls well and I was hoping it would last all night. My stylist quickly gave me smooth, bouncy waves, showing me the back with mirrors before she finished. It was a HOT humid day and I danced all night, sweated through the afternoon ceremony, and my hair still looked great by the end of the evening. The cost was about $29 USD, which is totally reasonable (I'm used to paying at least 50 for a style). I arrived at 10 am (when the shop was scheduled to open) for an appointment made in person the day before with the person at the desk (the manicurist), who wrote it down. The shop was dark. Robert showed up at 10:15 and refused to honor the appointment, saying the day was booked up. I explained that I only wanted a top trim for my bangs, which normally takes only a couple of minutes, but he refused. When I told him his employee had made the appointment, he said "well, she was wrong" and told me to come back at 4 pm, which I am unable to do. He then rudely said "well, then, it must not be that important to you." I was dumbfounded at both his rudeness and his refusal to honor an appointment made in person. I certainly would not go back. Third time the stylist, Dani, was a no-show for a confirmed blow dry. Robert offered to do it, but my experience with him was terrible....he hurt me while shampooing and blowing dry my hair. When I told him "ouch, you are hurting me" he ignored me and kept on....hurting me. Frankly, I don't think this salon is interested in attracting or keeping customers. Avoid it! One star. read more

Got a haircut, and gel mani pedi on Fri Dec 15 so my nails would be done and I wouldn't have to worry about it over the holidays when I was travelling. I've been getting gel polish for 2 years, and they usually last me at least two weeks, often 3. I'd taken a 3 month break, so this was a double plurge--a christmas present to myself, and back to having done nails after a break. Today is Wed Dec 20 and I have one massive chip and other small chips and the side edges are uneven, and the top of the nail is pulling back. It seems like the gel hadn't fully cured, nor did she cap the nail. The polish wasn't a brand I was familiar with, so I assumed what she was doing was based on the specific brand. she took AGES spreading the polish on one nail, which I thought was odd. I had to have her fix a couple nails, but it seems I didn't catch all the flaws. The next day, I also noticed that I had to go in and scrape of the gel on the sides of the nails, as she hadn't properly done that either, leaving clear gel on my skin. To be blunt, I can paint my nails better than this. Super annoyed that after spending 6000 pesos for a mani-pedi, I have to fix this while travelling. the haircut was fine, it was just a straight cut. I thought it was odd he cut first and washed after, but no big deal. He also didn't show me the back, of the cut. I was very surprised that what presents itself as an upscale salon didn't use any heat protection before drying my hair. He did put a bit of shine serum on it at the end though. All in all, on the expensive side for Mexico I thought, and definitely expensive for the quality of service. Do not recommend, super unhappy that I have to have these redone ASAP. read more

I realize keeping a beauty salon clean isn't easy but the Robert Abuda Salon staff really works to keep it clean. Other amazing things about this place: The chairs are comfortable, they always have good music, making an appointment means no waiting time to be seen, the staff is incredibly skilled. I had been trying to get a very specific red/cooper color on my hair that other hair stylists never quite understood or managed to achieve but in the very first appointment I had with Angie, senior stylist, I got it just the way I wanted it. I went traveling to Mexico for two weeks all the way from San Francisco California with my husband. We stayed in Mexico City for a few days then flew to a beautiful city of Merida and stayed in Fiesta Americana. After how many days of traveling, I thought of getting a mani and pedi spa for myself but unfortunately, our hotel didn't have open slot for me so I called few salons but I didn't get any luck until I thought of trying out Yelp then I found Robert Abuda Salon. I emailed Robert directly asking if he could accommodate my last minute request and I am glad he did. He replied fast and was very helpful to me. I had an appointment on the same day. Their location is only 10min away by walking from our hotel which is very convenient. I met with his two ladies, Anjie and Annie. Both of them were very accommodating and friendly. Anjie did my nails done. She was very good on what she's doing, she was very polite and focused. Overall she did an excellent job with my nails. THUMBS UP for Anjie! I also had a great conversation with Annie. She's fantastic! I really had a great experience doing business with them like I was telling Robert that he's lucky to have these two girls working for him which is indeed true. I am fairly particular about my hair. For many,many years I had a standing 4 week appointment to get my color or highlights done. Since I travel all the time now, I usually research as best I can and Robert Abuda Salon definitely was a winner. Rob asked the right questions and made some good suggestions. My hair looks so shiny and the color is perfect. I went ahead and had a manicure and pedicure while I was there. Angie took great care of me on that. Be aware they only do gels. I used to have powder dip manicures in the US so gels was fine on the manicure. I think it is overkill on a pedicure but that is my opinion. The service itself was great, though. I specifically booked with the owner on 3 different occasions and have yet to see him or speak to him personally. He only works Friday's and is booked pretty far out. My first time booking was for a haircut + balayage and booked 6-7 weeks in advance only to get an email 3 days before my scheduled appointment saying my appointment was cancelled due to it being a holiday. I had a photoshoot and important event planned a few days later so this was extremely disappointing. Why would you not block your schedule in advance for holidays??? My second time booking was just for a cut I was in desperate need of but when I arrived I was greeted by a woman who said she would be cutting my hair. I was annoyed but still went with it because this Merida hard water had done a number on my hair and my ends were trashed. I have fine curly hair and was hoping for a specific style but just asked for a 90 degree angle trim because she didn't see very confident when looking at my hair. I managed High end Hair Salons in San Francisco for 15 years and am well versed in feeling out stylists. She was very pleasant and did a decent enough job but I did find some uneven pieces when I got home. Not worth the money I paid honestly. On my third attempt to book with Robert I got a consultation appointment 3 weeks out but once again on arrival I was greeted by someone else with no explanation as to why Robert wasn't there. I believe the stylist's name was Julio. He was very nice and seemed to understand what I was looking for (basically Balayage with a root melt) I explained I have hair that comes up very red/gold when lightening although it is fine and fairly light brown/dark blonde but he didn't seem to acknowledge what I was saying. I asked if they used foils or plastic as this makes a big difference for the result my hair. He gave no answer but I went ahead and booked my appointment for the following week. I ended up getting covid and had to rebook a couple of times as I was sick for several weeks. I did so with several days advance notice and once I was feeling better I rebooked again. The day of my appointment I was excited and headed down to Centro in an Uber I had just arrived early enough to get a coffee across the street at one of my favorite coffee spots Marago cafe. While waiting for my latte about 5 minutes before my appointment time I got an email saying Julio wasn't going to come in that day because he was sick. I completely understand being sick but notifying someone 5 minutes prior to an appointment is just ridiculous. I spent 200 pesos just to get there and another 150 to get home. I was done with this place at that point! If the staff wasn't so kind and polite it would be zero stars from me! If you value your time and money whatsoever I highly advise looking elsewhere. read more

I needed to find a salon that accepted card. Their services are very expensive, like 3-4 times what you'll pay at other salons. And definitely not higher quality. My brow wax still has many little hairs in the line and I had to come home and fix it. And I have paint on my skin from the pedicure. read more

Got my lashes done here 4/2 and I was super excited, one because it was my first time to Mérida and two because I was going to get my lashes done. The appointment process was super easy; I booked through yelp. When I went in for my appointment the young ladies were really since and welcoming. I showed up early and was taken in right away. When I went to lay down I noticed there were eye lashes on the area where I was suppose to lay down. This kinda out me off cause it should have been cleaned. The process didn't take very long (maybe a little over an hour). I did what I was told and made sure to keep them relatively dry for the next couple of days. When I got back to the hotel I noticed the right wide was much fuller than the left and there was a tiny part where there was nothing in the middle of my lashes. So about four days later the lashes from my left side started off, but not the right side. This has been the base for the past week and a half. Now my lashes are totally uneven. If it wasn't for the pleasant staff, it probably would have been a 1 star rating. I just really feel that I didn't get what I paid for. read more

As most people know, finding a new stylist who can make your hair look and feel amazing the first time you visit them is really hard these days... but that's exactly what happened when I went to see Robert Abuda! Prior to moving to Merida, I was on the lookout for someone who had experience with naturally curly hair and Robert was recommended to me by multiple people. I reached out to him a few months in advance of my move to see if he had any experience with my hair type and he assured me that he did and told me to contact him once I arrived in town. Once I moved to Merida and got settled, I reached out to Robert for an appointment and within a few days I was at his salon getting a consultation. As soon as I sat down in his chair he confirmed the texture of my hair was something he was familiar with, reassured me that my curls would remain "tight and in tact" and then explained why the products he was using would not only help my hair but also why they would be beneficial. I wasn't too familiar with the products he recommended but meeting with Robert prior to my appointment really put me at ease so I scheduled my appointment and within a few days went in to see him. Now normally after I have my hair colored it takes a week or two before it "gets back to normal" but my hair felt AMAZING as soon as I left the salon! I have to admit that I've been pleasantly surprised... it's more than a week later and my hair is the softest it's ever been in a very long time! And as a matter of fact, I've washed my hair a couple of times and have noticed that my curls are smoother, my ringlets are much tighter and my hair has more body then it did before! I'm sooooo glad that I reached out to Robert and that I didn't have to go through 5 different stylist before I found "the one"! If you value your hair DO NOT let Robert cut your hair. After describing exactly what I wanted (just a trim and layering) he went to work like he was in a race to cut my hair and get me out the door. It was Friday night and maybe he had a date.. He not only cut my hair way to short he also took a chunk out of the left side. I used Yelp yesterday to find a hair salon near my hotel (Hyatt Regency) in Merida Mexico. I sent a message through yelp to the Robert Abuda salon regarding an appointment not having mentioned what services I was interested in. I'm in Merida as I had surgery last week. I live in Belize and this is where we come for all medical care. I received a prompt reply from Roberts salon which I was pleased about and was offered an appointment the next morning. I was thrilled as I needed my hair washed and wasn't able to do so myself. I felt pretty good about the salon after reading the reviews and had walked past the location numerous times and it's extremely attractive. I arrived and felt comfortable immediately as Rob spoke English and was quite nice. I decided to get a haircut as well as a shampoo...I got a great haircut...exactly what I asked for! After he dried it and I was pleased I even decided to put some highlights in but stressed the importance that I wanted them to be subtle. Rob showed me some pictures and we did it...the end result couldn't possibly have been better! What a great salon and stylist and the prices are perfectly in line with my expectations. I was recently down in Merida on vacation and I realized that it was way hotter than I was expecting, and that my hair was way longer than it should have been for this type of climate. So I looked at what was available in the area and was pleasantly surprised to find a salon which was run by a fellow Canadian. So I popped in and they were able to take me immediately even without a prior appointment. The owner of the salon, Rob, is a really friendly guy with a great skill for cutting hair. His Salon is very clean and carries a variety of different hair products and overall I was really happy with what he did with my hair. Another surprise was that the staff spoke English fairly well considering that I've been a country that primarily speaks Spanish. I would highly recommend anyone who is down in Merida for vacation and is in need of a haircut to check this salon out. read more

I agreed to the enormous amount they asked for highlights (2800 pesos!) thinking that the result would be worth it. My mistake. The result was not bad but far from what I initially asked for. Dear Robert Abuda, Paseo Montejo may look like the Champs Elysees, please keep in mind you are in Mexico. And for a result that you could get anywhere else.
