David Steel of G&S Home Remodeling and builder/contractor for Ben McCormick Homes built a new home…read moreon undeveloped property next our property. Since the new build, water from that property now FLOODS our property like a river every time it rains washing away landscaping, displacing landscape timbers, mulch, plantings, washing cubic yards of sand and dirt from the builds landscaping onto our grass, causing ponds of standing water and potential deterioration to our fence. This concern has been addressed with the builder on multiple occasions from the beginning of construction, until he sold the property, and even now. Mr. Steel assured us that he would correct the drainage issues and kept reassuring us that it would be taken care of. However, instead of correcting the issues I feel he has dragged this along until he sold the property. There are several open complaints with the City of North Charleston Public Works and Code Enforcement and have overlapped the sale of the house. The city has a drainage plan that was not followed by the builder and is directing excessive amounts of stormwater onto the adjacent property. This information is known to the builder, but was not told to the realtor and subsequently the buyer of the property. Additionally, the builder had trees on the property that were overgrown and damaged the roof of the adjacent property causing damage. These were not addressed until roughly 1-2 weeks prior to property being sold. The builder claims to be experienced and of the highest quality, so why is it that properly providing drainage was not done? In my opinion, the most likely answer is that they intentionally decided to drain the water to our property because it was the quickest and cheapest way to resolve their drainage issue. In summary, it is my opinion that this builder has knowingly channeled water onto our property and it is my hope that they will do the responsible thing and correct the drainage issues. Until this is resolved, I can not in good conscience recommend this company.

Two other contractors came out and never even gave me a bid the trees were so large, they didn't want to do it. But Southern Roots wasn't afraid. They showed up on time, cut the 70 foot dead tree down without hitting either my fence or my shed. They were polite, cleaned up all of the mess, and was it ever fun to watch. If you need trees cut, this is the business to use, you won't regret it.

I would categorize my experience with this business as mostly positive with a few frustrating issues. The owner is exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to trees, academic actually. And far superior to the other companies I interviewed. I would say this was the most prominent reason I hired him. I found his crew to be extremely professional and very efficient. They all knew the order of business for the day and what the responsibilities/expectations were of each team member, even when the boss wasn't there. They worked hard and did not waste time. I would also like to add they were respectful of my property and cognizant of not damaging it with the equipment. The areas I believe need improvement are related to communication and follow-up/-through. My service was split into 2 parts and were conducted on separate days, tree removal and stump grinding, respectively due to utilities marking. Zero issues with the first day The second visit was delayed, however, and that wasn't communicated to me until the crew didn't show up. It was explained to me only when I called them after they were already several hours late. They did show up promptly the second time. The second day did run late because they had to start late which wasn't an issue for me, but it did contribute to the second issue. By the time the stump grinding was finished, the batteries on the blower were dead and the street and driveways were not able to be cleaned up. It was quite messy and bad enough that I would have gotten a ticket from my HOA. I was assured before they left that they would swing by first thing in the morning to blow them clean. I had to call 2 more times to get someone out to do it and then they still left the driveways a mess. I had to go out and sweep my driveway myself, which is an issue because my capabilities are limited. Lastly, my contract included following-up service to remove a treatment wrap on my tree six months later. It never happened. I had to go out and do it myself. Would I hire Southern Roots again? Yes, but with some caveats. I would probably interview some competitive companies first to see what they had to offer. I would also expect to have to deal with the above issues and know I would have to stay on them to follow-through. I would consider the issues I dealt with as minor and irritating, rather than a show-stopper.

Next I went thru a very stressful life change and purchased a new house that had sentimental value but needed major work to be live in ready. Jr and his outstanding team got it all done with time to spare. Truly a super hero team for all your repairs. Things that his team helped me with is whole house paint job, plumbing repairs, electric repairs, flooring and additional room addition. I will be using him and his team again and recommend others to this company with out any thoughts!

They were the only company that did!. We hired them and they are truly professional and reliable. Called Kevin from Coastal Stump grinding at 12:30pm he was out here at 1:00pm ready to get the job…read moredone. I had a tree struck by lightning. I had cleared the tree but needed the stump ground down. Kevin got it done in under 30 minutes and he came in at under half the cost what another company quoted. He even used a broom and blower to clean up the area. I Highly recommend him!
