Koreshan State Park

The park has a $5 per car entrance fee and plenty of parking. There are two main areas: One side leads to a picnic area and campsites -- perfect for relaxing or spending the night. The other takes you to the historical settlement, where multiple preserved buildings are open for exploration. You can take a self-guided tour using a $1 handout map from the visitor center or simply read the detailed informational signs posted around the site. Walking through the grounds feels like stepping into a ghost town, complete with original structures and remnants of a once-thriving community. Despite the eerie history, the park is peaceful, quiet, and well-shaded, making it a nice place to wander, learn, and take a break from the Florida heat. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

But after reading the novel "The Magic Kingdom" written by Russell Banks recently (I do recommend) based on the history of the Koreshan cult, I wanted to visit the park during my next trip. And we did. The park is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. They have tours and demonstrations on the property. You can browse on your own of you want. We opted for a guided tour that starts at 10 am for $10/person, you can book online ahead of time or just pay and join on the spot. It was well worth it, our guide gave us a lot of interesting information (although she didn't know about the books), about Dr. Cyrus Teed, the guru of the Koreshan who started the religious cult in New York, moved it to Chicago, then to Estero Bay in Florida where they helped develop the area. Lots of fascinating stories about their settlement, religion concepts, work in the area, business, the role of women within the cult. We lingered afterword to browse some more, lots of memorabilia on display and we were lucky to witness some demonstrations. You need at least 2-3 hours to see everything. You can bring lunch, there are picnic tables. A lot of places and houses in this big park. Wear comfy shoes, bring a hat. You will also see cool plants and animals in the wild (cool lizards, small iguanas). It's worth checking out if you're looking for an activity that opens a big window into the history of the area!

We drove over from the East coast of FL and we almost didn't go because it was supposed to rain all weekend. I am glad we went, the weatherman was wrong again. This used to be called Shady Acres and all the signage still says Shady Acres (In fact I think when they ran my CC it came up Shady Acres) This RV park has a certain amount of space that is for traveling guests and then there are quite a few full timers here. They didn't have a DJ that I saw, but they had speakers and hooked up to someones phone and played music. The band was good, seemed to be a local group and friendly with everyone there. I do not remember seeing the food truck but I was not looking either. All in all, its a campsite, with 2 newly renovated pools. I only use it to park my RV and do things during the day. Its close to a lot of cool places. When we went to go hook up we had a wasps nest in our plug area and they came right away to spray. I would certainly go back.

We spent two whole months at Imperial Bonita Estates. Normally our winters are spent in Arizona…read more This was a first for us in Florida and the first for spending two months. I do have a couple complaints about the park. One being is that it needs a hot tub. Most RV parks of this nature have hot tubs. This one is lacking. The other complaint is about screen rooms. This park is in Florida and there are lots of bugs and no see'ums. However, this park does not allow screen rooms at your RV site unless that room is attached to your RV. Without a screen room you need to lather up in bug spray. Sites are fairly close together but there is still room to have a nice patio. A river flows through the park making it perfect for kayaking. Roads are level for bike riding and there are plenty of activities to enjoy. We enjoyed shuffleboard, tennis, pickleball and many of the other activities available at the park. Should we return to Florida for another winter, we would definitely consider staying here. It's also in a great location and close to the beach.

Non attached clothesline used, dogs not on leashes and barking dogs all over the place. Two other neighbors around me are not returning due to so many issues not being addressed. Lots are very close together both on the sides and back. And then if you have a neighbor that smokes you can not open your windows. We complained about items and nothing was every done. The last comment is that there are not enough English speaking people in the Park. If you don't speak French I would avoid this Park for all the reasons listed. There reservation system is terrible.
