I happen to be there during and event and it ended up pretty awesome. They had a live band and they were pretty good. The band definitely sound like they were from the 40's and they did such a great job. I think they even went out of the way to dress and sound just like that era. I had a feeling that a lot of the stuff they sang was their own because I didnt recognize it and I listen to a lot of old Jazz and Big Band Stuff. Everyone came dressed the part which was really cool and they had a lot of really good dancers. The athmosphere was fun and it was old to young. Thats what I realy liked about it, they hand enough teens for teens to dance with, and they had enough adults so that adults could swing. The music never stopped and they even do group dances. I liked the church as well. It was very pretty.

i was somewhat hesitant walking into the church for 8am mass today because even though i've been…read moregoing to sunday mass more often recently than during other periods of the life i've lead, i admittedly maintain some bias about the madalene church having a demographic on the elderly side of that spectrum among the catholic church parishes in tulsa, in significant part because of its standalone position with regard to the relation between catholic churches and catholic schools in the city. nonetheless, i recognized some young people among the congregation as an customary age of late high school to early college students, which heartens me to see that the madalene, at which i frequented vacation bible school as a kid, still maintains diversity within it's congregation. further, unique among the practices to which i've given witness from the various parishes, the church features scrolllike banners on both sides of the altar to remember parishioners of the church who have died within the previous year, and while i did not immediately remember any of the names, i thought the banners each contained about 10 to 12 names, so i'm wanting to send prayer that those 20 to 24 souls rest well. and the priest, whom i did not remember specifically but of whom momma reminded me of his name, and the memories she recalled of him enjoying riding on the bike and playing soccer with us children matched the energetic presence he conveyed during mass. he also reminded me that the church continues to celebrate our dead throughout november, along with mentioning that the church has invited a group of mexican dancers to lead a procession next week after the 10am church service. and lastly, a group of nuns were at the church, and i have to say religious devotion has never looked so good; your boy was giving that amen a lil extra umph.

Children and families are a big focus there, and the music and worship services have something for each generation. This Church is one of the very first Churches ever built in Tulsa (1886) and it is also one of the…read morelargest in the city. When Tulsa was still Indian territory, First Presbyterian was just getting started. Wikipedia said congregants "originally met in the store owned by (founders) James M. Hall and Harry C. Hall. The first permanent minister, Reverend Charles William Kerr and his wife arrived in Tulsa in 1900. Kerr remained at this church for over 40 years. Under his leadership, the church became the second largest in its denomination." It has continued to play a prominent religious role in Tulsa to this very day. The Tours of Tulsa church tour features First Presbyterian on it's city tours, which is how I visited it. The 3-story building is very impressive with a domed roof and majestic ionic columns on the porticos. Built with Oklahoma Limestone, the church is self-cleaning on it's exterior. The hot sun bakes off the dirt and the rain then washes it away. It's first spire was built in 1917 and a second spire was added in 2012, when First Presbyterian under went a remodel. This historical church has stood the test of time and is worthy of 5 YELP STARS.
