First let me say if you are going to try them out get there early so you can select from everything rather than just what is left over. Located just down the street from the River Oaks District this is a must try for donut lovers. They have a few chairs outside as well so it would be a great place to meet up with a friend. I've had a lot of kolaches from a lot of different places and hands down they simply have the best ones I've had in Houston to date. Ironically I wasn't going to get any kolaches since I really have a sweet tooth and wanted to try the donuts and donut holes. Even when I said it would go into my review if it was bad the guy didn't blink and suggested I try it. Try for yourself and leave me a compliment if you agree with me. Their normal donuts are ok. Their gf donuts are inedible. We went for my gf friend to try them and even she didn't like them (she usually loves even gross gf stuff because it's nice to be able to eat it). I asked and she admitted "tastes like chalk". Very disappointing and flavorless experience. I ordered donut holes, blueberry cake donut and egg and potato kolaches for $10. The kolaches were tiny and literally had absolutely NO flavor. Debatable whether it's 2.5 or 3 stars--we ordered quite a number of doughnuts, from the unicorn to the cream filled. All of the ones with glazes were offputtingly sweet, one of the creamfilled (cappucino) tasted completely artificial, almost like fake coffee creamer, and one of the twists tasted as if the dough was raw (super chewy, not in a good way.) We were bummed given the good reviews. The only one doughnut that was reasonably good (more than a few bites) was the cake doughnut. The reason we rounded up was that the server interacting through the mic at the drive through was extremely patient and pleasant--she was great. We were so bummed we drove down to B&B to try them--not amazing, but much much better than River Oaks. Super confused by the good reviews. Not going back, would recommend trying other places. So the location & food was good but the service was absolutely terrible & I don't say that often. While there was lots of help. We felt like we were a burden to them. The donuts were SO yummy - flaky, soft, tasty. Not flat. Literally perfect! A little on the small side, but I'd rather have a small perfect donut than a big sucky one They also have a great selection of kolaches! I got the sausage jalapeño cheese, and YES SIRRRRR so good. They are TINY though - heads up. They're palm sized, so I'd recommend two if you love your kolaches. But seriously, kinda crispy, REAL sausage, all melted cheese inside. I could eat like 10. The quest for cronuts continues, and some yelp research led me to this cute little shop located on Westheimer between Edloe and Timmons. Stopped by on a Sunday morning around 8:30am and the place was already packed. In fact, it was so packed that we had scoot out of the way every time a new customer came in the door (the shop is tiny). There was also a line. Seriously? Shouldn't people be asleep in bed on an early Sunday morning? The wait took about 15 minutes, not too bad. The good thing is that once you order, they grab the stuff for you and you're ready to check out. We got the non-filled sugared cronuts (of course), two kolaches, and several piglets. The piglet basket was empty, but when I asked they went to the back and got more. They also asked if we wanted the kolaches heated, which was a really nice gesture. Cronuts: Thick, fat, and very lightly glazed. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, I enjoyed every bite. It wasn't overly sweet and the layers of dough inside was delightful. Yum! Ham and cheese kolache: Bread was soft and fluffy paired with chunks of ham and melted cheese. Loved this one as well, too bad it was so small, gone in a second! Egg, bacon and cheese kolache: I liked that the bacon was evenly distributed throughout the whole kolache so you get bacon with every bite. The eggs however tasted like eggbeaters. Meh. Piglets: Bite sized kolaches with a slice of sausage. Delicious! This place is definitely on the pricey end, as the cronut is $3.79 and the kolaches were $1.99. Nevertheless, everything was good and since the place is so packed, you know the turnover rate is high, which means more fresh kolaches and donuts for me! My family and I just stopped by to get iced coffee and some gluten free donut holes. I asked for a small iced latte and Kelton corrected me and said this isn't Starbucks because he misheard me and thought I said tall. When I greeted him with a good morning and how are you I received no response, instead he just closed the window. Best thing about this place is that it's cute. I'm on a kolache tour and tried a bunch of kolache joints and this was a mediocre kolache at best. The dough didn't have that trademark light sweetness. It was a bit dry and didn't warm well. They also had a whole wheat kolache which had a brittle texture and didn't go so well. I did try a bunch of donuts too and I would say their donuts are mediocre as well. I tried red velvet, old fashioned, blueberry, and a filled donut. The old fashioned has a really pleasant nutmeg flavor. The blueberry is very blueberry forward but tastes a bit artificial which was a turnoff. This gets 3 stars for me because it's just average. The donut stacks up to the level of a donut at a grocery store. The kolaches though -- I'd recommend skipping altogether. They weren't bad tasting, they were just underwhelming for kolaches and you could do much better. read more

This place has vegan cake donuts (powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar). It was more of a bready cake donut but it was still very good. The more I ate it the more I liked it. The powdered sugar wasn't too sweet either. I bought the devils cake donut and a chocolate frosted yeast donut for my friend and she said it was also good. Both were recommended by the staff there. My family and I visited the shop in 12/9 at around 10:45 am and had the worst service from a Donut shop we've ever had. Now trust me normally you wouldn't have us visiting this shop if it weren't for the kindness of one of my students gifting me a gift card for Christmas . We arrived and decided to go through the drive thru. We were greeted (if you can call his monotone "can I help you" a greeting) by a young man and we asked for a few more minutes to decide what to order, we received no response. Finally after deciding on a few donuts and coffees we ordered and got a minimal response without confirmation of what we had ordered, all we heard was "move up to the window". When we finally moved up we saw the young man place a few items next to the window and go back for more, never once acknowledging us or telling us our total. When he finally handed us our drinks my husband handed over our gift card and credit card. He proceeded to check us out without saying a word, still no mention of how much it was. My husband had to remind him that we would like to use the gift card, to which he didn't respond. When we finally got our order it was missing a donut and a water and a receipt. We didn't realize at the time we were missing the water so we had to drive back (luckily we hadn't gotten too far). This time my husband decided to go inside. When he informed the same employee about the water and asked "could I just grab one from this little fridge?" The employee's response was an arm shrug...WTF?! I mean You are in River oaks for god sake and even if you weren't I'm a native Houstonian so you know my go to is shipleys and I don't think I've ever had this Popeyes treatment (if you know you know) at any of their locations. Not awesome but the fact that this is owned by the Hilldebrand family we went to try out Bought three dozen donuts and asked for a few (3) small paper bags for our team to take to their offices. After I had given them a 20 percent tip, they said they needed to charge me 20 cents per bag Really?!! I just paid nearly $40 for donuts and now I need to reuse my credit card for a 60 cent bag charge? Never going back here although I live 2 blocks away.
