Trattoria Ugo is a completely legit and ultra-authentic eatery with a clientele that's more than 90 precent locals - that's how good the food is! The food here is nothing short of amazing and the portion sizes are so generous that it's almost impossible to go away hungry :-) Everything on the menu is wonderful, but I highly recommend the pasta with pesto. There's also a surprisingly broad wine list, and their house wine is very good, and really inexpensive - it pairs very nicely with the pesto. Water (both sparlking and still) is complimentary, and the service is outstanding - you'll have an incredible meal here! Tip: The portion sizes being as large as they are, I strongly suggest you pick either one primo or one secondo; if you get both it will be very difficult to finish.

In the end, we discovered new pasta (Mandilli), had the best pesto I've ever eaten, and had a strawberry dessert so tasty and fresh. Nothing compares. I've never had Mandilli pasta before, nor have I seen it. I'm now on a quest to make it at home in the USA. Oddly, they do not serve pizza at lunchtime here. That was disappointing to me until I started eating my pasta and then I was like, "what pizza?" But I think it's a giant pizza. They have big wooden holders for it and it looks from the menu that it feeds 4 minimum. Bring an Italian-speaking friend or Google Translate. You'll need it for the menu. No English menus here.

After randomly wandering into the Piazza delle Erbe, we more of less picked randomly picked one of the Biggie tables and sat down. It was well after the Lunch hour, so the menu was limited. However, the hard working Biggie waitress was able to offer me a sandwich, while Gayle opted for a very nice salad. We both really appreciated the good service and the tasty food that matched. We also enjoyed hanging out and allowing time to slow down a bit. Biggie turned out to be a nice place to sample this small part of this very nice warm Old City Genoa afternoon.

The restaurant is small and quiet. The service was quick and friendly even though we know few words in Italian. The food is really fresh so don't get too attached to anything on the menu. They get it every day at the market. We had raviolis stuffed with vegetable and prawn in a butter sauce that was incredible. Both of us ordered steaks prepared in two sauces.
