I am very disappointed with my order of petit fours. They were wet and tacky. I ordered 100 for a fundraiser at a cost of $209 ($2.14 each). When I called to complain, I was told I could get a full refund if I returned them. However, this was at 3:30 pm, and the fundraiser was set to begin at 6:30 pm. If I had returned them, I wouldn't have had anything to serve. I placed the order weeks in advance and was assured they could be frozen. Instead, she chose to dip them in icing on a humid day, just an hour before pickup, which caused them to become wet and sticky to the touch. You couldn't pick them up--they had to be eaten with a fork. She could have at least offered a discount or split the cost for this disaster. read more

I'm trying to figure out how this place is in business. The service was not good at all, I'm not sure that the girl who helped me was properly trained on how to make an actual latte as there was no foam, and no one in my group liked their sandwiches enough to return again. At one point, we were searching for someone to help us in the front and I watched a woman in the back just standing there... like not with her phone or anything. She was just staring at the wall. Danielle, the new owner treated me to an enthusiastic discussion of the current menu and her plans to expand it, as she gets to know the tastes of her clientele. You can't find a full-service bakery in many small towns like this. Martinsville, Va., a former textile hub, has managed to sustain some local businesses like this gem and residents know where and when to go for the good stuff. I usually drive the 55 miles up there knowing I can bring back some great breads (biggest seller is Cranberry, Oats and Walnuts). real New York-style bagels and the flagship dish of all Souithern cafes...fresh chicken salad. There are cookies, granola bars, muffins, pies, cinnamon buns, baquettes and seasonal favorites for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas...stollen, easter breads and babkas! Munching on some of those goodies makes the drive back a piece of cake. I drove up and had lunch last Wednesday and the joint was jumping about 1 PM. The roast beef New Yorker sounded good: Boar's Head roast beef, melted cheddar cheese, chopped fresh cabbage with Russian dressing on a toasted, split baquette. A side of house-made potato salad was a special recipe of the new cook, Lawrence. A good potato salad can be a work of art if you use plenty of chopped hard-boiled eggs and a good mayo...people like their Duke's around here. As long as it contains some nice ground pepper, apple cider vinegar and celery salt, you got yourself a winner. This did and was right on time! So, Lawrence assembled his/my master piece and brings it to me on a huge plate and one guy a table over says, "You need to take a picture of that" and looked up and I had my Canon G1X camera around my neck focusing the shot. It's with this review. The baquette was warm and crusty, the rolled roast beef thick and tasty with cheese melted into it and the cabbage made for some big XXX mouthfuls ....one of those sandwiches that you know you're going to spill onto your plate and maybe your lap but you don't care because it's so doggone good. Look at that potato salad portion! They really loaded me up and I don't mind taking half of it home for dinner or a snack on the way back to North Carolina. Before I forget, Rising Sun Bakeries is the result of years of hard work, taste tests and dedication by owner Darla Main-Schneider, a native of Cedar Falls, Iowa. There is a freezer case with microwaveable entrees, vegan quiches and side dishes if you want to take the night off from cooking. I'd recommend this establishment to anybody and with confidence. Let me start by saying the food was delicious. I ordered a breakfast sandwich on sourdough with eggs, provolone, and bacon that really hit the spot. The server went out of her way to explain things and made things to order. There were, however some downsides. There were no full menus - we were referred online, but the online menus did not include prices. Some in-store display items also lacked prices. A mask mandate was posted on the door but not enforced. Those entering were neither asked to put on masks nor offered disposable ones. (It's a pretty small space.) There was one lady behind the counter and she acted in tone and mannerism like we were imposing instead of bringing money to her company, we even told her that we were new to the area and all she replied was oh.... wow. Tried the free sample of the Olive Sourdough Bread and it literally tasted like Vick's so needless to say after my tongue was numb that went in the trash. Did you know these folks have KETO food? Yep and its good. We had the cauliflower mac n cheese and creamed spinach last night and its really great together in one bite! Going back for more. These folks have been my 'go to' for group food for meetings etc. They individually package and wrap with everything the participant needs. This review is for the chocolate chip muffin. This is the quintessential chocolate chip muffin. It is like a work of art. It is the perfect balance. The batter is not too sweet, neither is the semi-sweet chocolate chips- which perfectly compliment the crust. There is a perfect ratio of batter to chocolate. The top is crunchy and delicious, and the chips remain melt-in-your-mouth. They started selling at the local market here and I gained five pounds. This is a quality bakery with old world style breads and everything else you can imagine, as well as some sweets and rolls. I'm thoroughly impressed. Will be back again and again until I simply roll myself into the store and then roll back out with chocolate melted all over my face. Bravo. read more

It's a wonderful spot. I headed there while visiting family and comfortably enjoyed eating a pastry and sipping coffee while doing some work. The staff are so welcoming and offered a sample of persimmon pie to taste. I got a loaf of cranberry walnut which my family thoroughly enjoyed. It was soft and just the right amount of sweetness. The hunt for a great baguette in rural Virginia is over. The Rising Sun Bakery is a magnificent hidden gem. I sampled their cookies, bars, baguette, and chicken salad sandwich and found myself more than delighted with everything that touched my lips. If I could give more than 5 stars for their pie crust I would. This is the first time I've purchased a pie (as opposed to making my own) and the crust has been perfect. We moved to Martinsville from Colorado and have had a very ROUGH time finding good food. Most of the restaurants in this town would not survive anywhere there was a choice. This place is a jewel on our first trip we each had a sandwich and split a quiche all items were excellent we even got a loaf of some kind of cranberry bread to go that was just as good as the other items we had.
