The pistachio cream puff was amazing! I also tried the chocolate croissant. It reminded me more of a danish with a chunk of chocolate and not as light and fluffy as a croissant but still very tasty. Going to start by saying I am not gluten-free, failed to read all the signs in the store, and ordered a breakfast sandwich not realizing it would be gluten-free. Person #2: (Silence) Person #1: Well I don't really have a good perspective. If you aren't gluten free you may enjoy the food here if you lower your standards because it's gluten-free. If you apply the same standards you apply to gluten-free-free food to this food, you'll probably be disappointed. If you are gluten-free I don't know what your expectations are, so ignore this review? I ordered the bacon and egg biscuit sandwich. The bacon was great, the egg was good, but the biscuit was more like crumbly cornbread. I like cornbread, just not when I want a biscuit. I also ordered the almond coconut donut despite my disappoint in the biscuit. The donut was less crumbly than the biscuit, but it was more like a dense muffin. I was sadly unimpressed with Rise Bakery. I was super excited because they had vegan desserts and I really was in the mood for something. To start, the bakery itself was very tiny. There were only two two-seater tables by the window and it was extremely tight. I went to go get water from the little area down the side of the counter and by the time I was back to the main area (which was literally two steps away from each other), someone already took the seats. It was kind of cold outside and we had to go all the way to the park benches to eat our desserts. The service was pretty bad. The woman in the front taking the orders was impatient and rude. This was a turn off and almost made me want to leave. The woman in the back preparing the orders was a little bit nicer though. They also only had three vegan items. They had vegan chocolate chip cookies in a bag with five or six of them -- which was inconvenient because I only wanted one and didn't want to carry around the rest for the reset of the time I was out since we were going a couple places after stopping by here. Then they had a banana nut muffin and a carrot cupcake. Of the two options, I decided to get the banana nut muffin. The muffin itself was pretty dry and underwhelming. Might come back just because I'm desperate for vegan chocolate chip cookies, but overall probably won't. It's in a great location in the heart of Adam's Morgan on a very busy street. read more

This bakery is entirely gluten free and also has vegan/dairy free options too! The perfect place to eat a desert with peace of mind, without fear of cross contamination if you are gluten free! This is the only place I've ever been to with gluten free bagels which are delicious! They also serve sandwiches and a few other savory items along with drip coffee. This review is limited, so be warned! As a baked goods fiend and baking fanatic/ czar... I am beyond picky and highly persnickety when it comes to liking a baked good that is labeled as some type of item. Thus, I understand the difficulties in existing as a gluten free establishment, and I give 5 stars for this aspect of Rise. That is an amazing business choice to make and upon which to thrive. It's an adorable shop with a couple tables and wifi. You can have anything heated up. They have coffee and cold brew (!) and almond milk! The bread is frozen the day it is baked- so don't fret about the quality for being old. Take a look at the first case but remember to walk around to the other side for cupcakes and brownies. They have cookies, too. The most delectable items look to be the croissants and quiches- nice they are gluten free (not vegan). The dairy and egg free items are few and far between, but it's nice to have them. My fav is probably the blueberry muffin. Everything else is decent but no fanfare from the not knowing it's vegan and gluten free perspective. However, from just a baked goods perspective, I feel that Rise Bakery is good, but nothing I would seek out again and again. Because of the attention to dietary preferences and needs, I would go back. Nice comfort to align with dietary needs. Please don't misunderstand though, overall, I do like their options, the presentation and the pricing. It is nice to have this place open around 7.30 am and as per usual bakery hours to close up around 5.30 pm - though, still, for my hours, this is a small window for me to patronize Rise as often as could happen. The location is convenient in the bustle of Adams Morgan, but the hours mean that you don't have to wrangle through the throngs of intoxicated people. I have never eaten anything at Rise that wasn't scrumptious. And, today for the first time, I ate a piece of German Chocolate Cream Pie that was absolutely decadent. I LOVE this place and make the trek rom Longmont periodically to treat myself and various friends. Given that I am high risk for COVID, I appreciate that I can still do curbside pick up. We love rise bakery!!! Its absolutely one of the best spots in DC to get Gluten Free food that is tastey, and healthy. They have vegetarian options too. My boyfriend who doesn't require gf still enjoys the sandwhich too :) my favorite is the gf surf panini. The warm tuna melt is the best for a hang over or just a lunch when your missing home. I'm currently eating low fodmap (it's wild, folks) so I'm gluten-free and dairy-free among other things, and was worried about finding a decent breakfast option while I was in DC for a conference. Rise Bakery saved my bacon! I called in advance and someone was able to promptly answer my questions about the ingredients of the bagels, sandwich breads, and biscuits. The chocolate chip cookies and breakfast biscuit sandwiches were both damn good - much better than any of my attempts to gf baking! The service was prompt and friendly, and while there are not tons of seats in the restaurant (from what I could see, only 4), I found a seat there both mornings that I went. I wish I could have tried more of their baked goods - no room for sandwich bread in my suitcase, and a lot of the options had coconut or dairy in them (verboten for me but enjoy if you can!) But I will be thinking about their cookies for a long while. And might even order some online... read more

I love rise bakery, their bread and pastries are delicious. My friend got me a dozen cupcakes of different flavors for my birthday and they were to die for. I was so happy to find a gluten free place that also serves food. Only down side is the bagels. I was excited to try these but was disappointed when I saw the size of the bagel. We love these folks! While we dont live near them we make a point to support them because 1) they make exceptionally high quality gluten free baked goods, and 2) because they always offer top rate service. I can assure you, even if you dont have a gluten free dietary restriction this is a place you should check out! I dont know how they do it but I literally cannot tell their food is gluten free (and it is obviously gluten free, i go here all the time with someone who has celiacs), it's that good! We love their pastries and sandwiches but I have tried most of the menu items and have not been disappointed once! Highly recommend, even if it means a drive to AdMo!! 10/10 read more

ohmygosh.... a gluten free bakery!!! I got the chocolate croissant and it was HEAVENLY.... It came straight out of the oven, and the croissant was topped with powdered sugar... it was not as flakey as a croissant with gluten would have been, but it was just as delicious.... soft and thick with melted chocolate inside... I was so excited that Rise, the city's first gluten-free bakery, was opening near me that I cancelled some of my plans to hit it up early in the day on their opening day, so that I could get something before they ran out of anything. Boy, was that a mistake! This place was not prepared for its opening day. I got there just over an hour after they opened. After waiting in line for awhile, as soon as I got to the front of the line, the guy at the cash register told me he was going to stop taking orders to help fill orders of the folks who came before me, but he assured me that my order would come out right away. Me: "How long do I have to wait?" Him: "10-15 minutes." Before I let him just leave me there, as a long line grew behind me, I wanted to be sure that they actually had some vegan options available, so I asked what they had that was vegan. They do NOT label the items that are vegan, so there's no way to know unless you ask. I did not want to wait if they didn't have any vegan options available. He told me they had some bagels and some blueberry muffins that would be coming out shortly. "We will have some vegan cupcakes and cookies, hopefully, later in the day, when things are less crazy." I looked him straight in the face and told him, "It's your opening day. Things aren't going to get less crazy." After waiting patiently, I tried to order 2 bagels and one blueberry muffin, to which he responded that the bagels wouldn't be ready for at least 10 minutes, and they didn't have blueberry muffins. WHAT? You just told me they would be out shortly. "They're not going to be out for awhile." So basically, he just lied to me. That is excellent customer service, sir! Where did you learn that? I would not have waited 10-15 minutes if the guy had told me the truth - that there were no vegan items available. He seems to confuse customer service with just telling people what they want to hear, regardless of whether he can meet the expectations he lets them rely on. No wonder they were so backed up. What kind of bakery takes counter orders for things that aren't actually available? On my way out, I talked to one woman who had been waiting for 40 minutes for her order. By the time we finished talking, she had been waiting almost an hour. Mind you, this was in addition to the time she had waited in line to place her order. They also told her that it would take 10 minutes for her to get her order. Here is what I do not get: What kind of bakery has that kind of back up? Every bakery I have ever been to fills your order as you place it. You say you want a bagel, they grab a bagel, put it in a bag. They don't take 700 orders and then start filling them. At this bakery, just because an item was in the case didn't mean it was "available" for you to purchase and eat, because it was already spoken for. Even with the dreadful Georgetown Cupcake you will actually get a cupcake after you wait in line for an hour to order. They don't taunt you with cupcakes that are "spoken for." I have no idea how Rise thinks their line should work, but it is incredibly inefficient. Just because I was itching for further disappointment, I returned to the bakery the next day on my way home from the gym. Even though there were only 3 people in line, it still took forever. Again, inefficient. The same guy at the counter (who I later discovered is the OWNER) lied to the guy at the front of the line when asked if there were any muffins. Counter guy said no, Ordering guy's kid whined about wanting a muffin, Counter guy says okay, we have some day-old muffins. Seemed like a repeat of the day before when the same guy told me that there were muffins available when there weren't any. When I got to the front of the line, the counter guy/owner didn't even acknowledge my presence. He basically ignored me for several minutes while he did other things. Again, I am so impressed by his customer service skills! Despite my well-founded disdain for this man at this point, I still ordered some baked goods. I didn't know at the time that he was the owner. He could have just been some poor, poorly-trained counter dude. I wound up getting a couple of cupcakes and a hand-pie, which, although smaller than the cupcake, was more expensive. $3.50 per cupcake, $3.75 for a small hand pie that was just dry. The vanilla cupcake was unremarkable, but the chocolate cupcake was very good. I will probably find myself here again if only because it is close, and it will be easier to shrug off the disappointment and annoyance should I encounter it again, but I would never go out of my way for this place. One final note: this place has weird hours for a "bakery." Most bakeries open early in the morning, not at 10am, especially on weekdays. And they close at 7pm. It seems they're missing the breakfast & coffee rush (which might be a good thing for customers' frustration levels) AND the dinner crowd. Hours seem to be aimed at tourists. read more

I was so excited to try their cinnamon roll. It looked delicious on Instagram. The bakery is clean and the employee was so friendly. I got my cinnamon roll and I was off to Kalorama Park to eat my treat and people watch. Well it didn't go as planned. It tasted horrible. If this is what gluten free food is like then consider me out. The texture was odd. It was hard, I took my first bite and I knew it was gonna be gross. The cream cheese was disgusting. Loved this place! Really excited that a gluten-free bakery is open in the city, and that they also have dairy-free (that is, vegan) options. I had the Everything bagel with soy cream cheese and a pumpkin spice muffin. I didn't even finish the muffin--the bagel was a completely filling breakfast. The coffee wasn't the greatest, but I'm willing to let that go considering that there's now a place that serves tasty, allergy-free baked goods. Also, service was super friendly and amiable and made me feel right at home. It's a small space, so I imagine if you come here to work on your laptop you probably don't want to stay more than a few hours (if it's busy). read more

I was happy to find a gluten free bakery while visiting Washington DC, but was extremely dissatisfied with our experience there. I specified to the woman who took our order that my brother can't have tomato or red pepper because he is allergic. He is also blind and when he went to eat the pizza, he couldn't see that it was covered in red peppers. This was a major issue as he is allergic to them. Furthermore, because the bakery closed their seating due to covid, we were eating it a block away in a park and didn't have time to go back to have the pizza remade properly or get a refund so I had to throw out the pizza, which cost $21.95 (vegetable pizza with vegan cheese) and he didn't have anything to eat for lunch. read more

Great gluten free, vegan friendly bakery the staff was well informed on different diets and very friendly. Prices are reasonable, atmosphere is light and fun, service quick. The peanut butter chocolate pie was a creamy mousse on top of dates. Good balance of sweet and salty. Rating is for food only. The everything bagel was small-ish but EXCELLENT! Great consistency. Most GF bagels tend to be too spongy for my taste, but this bagel seemed like a gluten-full bagel (although I haven't had a real bagel in years). The chocolate chip cookie was equally DELICIOUS! Why did I order only one?! I wish I had a bakery/cafe like this where I live. I hope I have time on my trip to go back for more. As other reviewers have mentioned, service is mediocre (one person at the counter seemed undertrained and the other seemed annoyed), and there are only seats for 4 people. At one point, there were at least 7 adults and 4 kids in this tiny place, so it felt like a sardine can. Since I'd read reviews in advance, I was prepared for this situation. I had an urgent need to pick up gluten free AND vegan desserts on my way into work (I work in Tysons, live in AdMo) for a coworker with the above mentioned food restrictions. It was a birthday party and typically no one thinks to get items that *Everyone* can have, so I wanted to make sure she had something special. Cue: RISE BAKERY. Not only were they open hella early (I stopped in at 8AM) they had enough options to make it worth my efforts. Granted, I had done some pretty extensive yelp review research the day before, so I knew the claim to fame in regard to the vegan option was their chocolate chip cookies. Lucky for me at 8AM, they had several pre-made bags (6 cookies per bag) of these cookies ready to go. I picked up two bags and they kindly gave me a pastry box complimentary to put them in and make it look extra classy. The total wasn't unreasonable, I believe it came to just under $15 for the two bags. And the cookies were delicious. Everything is at a standard gluten free. Definitely highly recommend. read more

I regularly buy their bread and bagels, and more occasionally other treats like flourless chocolate cake, cupcakes, etc. I'm genuinely floored to see that they don't have a 100% 5-star rating on Yelp (although I'm not attuned to vegan and dairy-free needs). It's a neighborhood joint that punches above its weight, and staff are always friendly & helpful. There's even a loyalty program so that if you shop there regularly, you get a free treat with your 7th purchase! They also do cakes and catering with advance notice. I highly recommend. read more

So thankful for Rise!! I have to eat GF and have for ~8 years. Some of the best baked goods I've had (and I've lived in 4 cities across the US). I appreciate they're always improving their recipes and offerings. I initially agreed with an earlier post about the change in croissant recipe, but it's gotten better! It is different than before, but it's flaky like a real croissant now. You know how many years it's been since I got to peel layers on a croissant?! Plus their cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake are to die for. Worth the prices. It's GF and fresh, what do you expect? I've ordered from there two days in a row. The breakfast biscuit with eggs and cheese and bacon was good (4 stars - eggs could've used a bit more salt and pepper and biscuit was dry but tasty), but today I had the turkey sandwich on brioche. 5 stars plus! Wow. Perfect bread, amazing turkey, good cheese. Just great. This is better than regular bread. I wish I could get a bunch of brioche rolls delivered before I leave but no option for that on Caviar. I am gluten intolerant and gluten free skeptic. Most gf products are so gummy and just awful. Rise made me a believer. I purchased the cheddar jalapeño loaf and the challa. I have only tried the cheddar but it was fabulous. Toasted some up after throwing it in the freezer when we got home. I would not have guessed this was gluten free bread. Thank you. So many bakeries, so little time. For Christmas a couple of years ago, I received a $25 gift card to Rise Bakery in DC. It's definitely not a bakery I would have sought out, but now I'm so happy to have discovered it! Rise Bakery is a gluten-free bakery in the Adams Morgan neighborhood that was founded in 2014. They specialize in catering to specialty diets without sacrificing taste, texture, or richness. So they make several gluten-free, vegan items. I absolutely love how everything is labeled as dairy free, egg free, soy free, or nut free, and of course, vegan. I felt like a kid in a candy store with my gift card, so I got like one of everything! The Raspberry Jam bar was absolutely delicious. I cut it in half with the intention of only eating half, but that didn't exactly happen. The vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies are to die for. I mean, I was really impressed with how good they were--soft, rich, and loaded with chocolate--do not buy just one. The Carrot Cupcake was a little grainy, but I loved the icing. And, best of all, was the Superfood Bread. When have I ever loved a gluten-free bread? I don't think ever. This bread is some of the best bread I've ever had. Made with amaranth, quinoa, millet, flax seeds, and sesame seeds, you can eat it out of the bag or use it for sandwiches. No matter what though, either eat it quickly or freeze it because it will go bad quickly due to the nature of this fresh bread. I must say that I wasn't too excited about going to a gluten-free bakery, but after trying their baked goods, I'm very impressed. I can't wait to go back for more. read more

I was really excited to learn that we could order my birthday cakes from here in the future (we always have trouble finding gluten free options for celebrations!). I tried both their regular croissant and their chocolate chip cookies. Their croissant was not the best gluten free croissant that I have ever had but to be fair, this is only the second place I have ever found that offers gluten free croissants. The chocolate chip cookies were some of the best gluten free ones that I have ever had, they are delicious. I am really looking forward to trying many more options from this place! read more
