They have food vendors inside as well. The entire place is interesting and clearly been around a long time. It was about 2/3 populated with vendors, so there were plenty of empty spaces. Overall, it's one of the very few things to see/do in Livorno. There isn't a lot going on in this town otherwise.

Also sandwich shops and snack vendors. Our favorite was a salami shop outside where you can sit and have a meat and cheese platter with wine or a meat-stuffed sandwich. Their name is not on the stand but you can find them from the picture. Be sure to try their orange pepper jelly too.

The shop is a farmer's market featuring mostly local produce, meats, cheese, wine from local producers. The ham that the lady carves by the front door is out of this world!!! There is a filling station where you can fill your containers with wine and pay by the liter. They also have a good selection of local wines, Chianti and all, raw milk, etc. And you'll leave this place with a nice fuzzy feeling that you helped the local farmers instead of some giant industrial food conglomerate, a plus.

It's always a pleasure to walk around and soak in the local experience. There are a number of places to eat and I would recommend 2 restaurants to try in the market. Balsamico e Cucina - Monari Federzoni & Da Sergio "Abruzzo e le sue meraviglie " both are good for lunch or an afternoon snack. Great place to purchase gifts for the people back home.

In my fantasies, I bicycle to this market every day for provisions, which I then cook in my beautiful apartment overlooking the square. In reality, we circled the market several times, wishing we each had three stomachs so we could try everything in sight. We did a tasting of balsamic vinegars at Monari Federzoni, led by a lovely and knowledgeable young lady who spoke excellent English. Here's some really good advice I wish someone would have given me: 1. The limoncello is cheaper here than places I found north of here. 2. Skip the pasta seasoning OR look very closely that there are NO BUGS in there. I bought a few and had to throw them away. I found one bug in one of the packages. Removed the bug and put the rest in a ziplock because I brought this home all the way from Italy so I'm gonna freaking eat it. But then weeks later, there were a ton of bugs trapped in the bag. SO FREAKING GROSS! So I wish I could go back in time and NOT buy it. 3. Mushroom risotto was so good. I wish I bought more of that and less of the black risotto which is the squid ink. It lacked flavor. 4. Parm cheese - I found one stall that offered to cut my purchase into 4 blocks, then vacuum sealed it for me. I traveled Europe for 1.5 weeks unrefrigerated. When I finally got home, I put it in the fridge. 9 months later - it's still good! 5. If you want to try a bunch of Italian food, go to the food court. The lampredotto was snack size and delicious if you like intestines. The expensive truffle pasta was okay in my opinion (aka overrated). And I tried the pizza which was delicious!
