When most people come here, they come here "for the 'Gram" and for social media clout.
I'm not gonna lie, it's a beautiful spot to take a picture and soak in the scenery of the Golden Gate Bridge, Downtown San Francisco, and the Bay.
Little do people know that it was an anti-aircraft/coastal defense post during World War 2.
As you walk from the one-way street to the park, you pass by the outhouses that have the military architecture from the 40s. You continue up the path and come to the park that has a chain-link fence with locks that people have put on the fence.
The view of S.F. and the Golden Gate Bridge is quite spectacular- especially today since it was sunny.
As you turn away from the bridge and go to the concrete structure, you will notice several doors and various nooks. These one house military personnel that were charged with the safety of San Francisco Bay and the skies above. You can see the remnants of 2 large anti-aircraft guns. Past those are also 4 concrete bunkers- 2 of them have fireplaces. I'm guessing those were for officers. The other rooms were for enlisted personnel.
These structures have been taken over by nature, time, and the graffiti artists.
It's a good history lesson- if you just take the time to explore the view behind you. read more
