Rideau Acres is a great camp ground for families who want that extra safety net of security.
Upon booking, rescheduling, and all the first day communication we were treated kindly. Until we weren't.
I'm a single mother who doesn't drive, so I spoke to staff BEFORE booking to ensure that my cab would be able to enter to drop us off and pick us up. Having been told that everything would be okay, we bought a tent, tarp, gear, etc., got the cab and went on the first camping trip that I've been able to take my girl on.
The site was a lot more like a living community than I expected, but that was okay. People "camping" were especially kind. After one night I decided to stay for a third (and was going to stay longer but changed my mind). Due to the added day I needed to buy more wood and snacks. I quickly realized that I was not strong enough to carry the wood from reception to our site that was a ten minute walk (at normal speed, without the weight). I said to reception, "I didn't realize how heavy the wood is, I want to ask if there's another option ". That's when the snarky girl told me "we don't do delivery" -- it wasn't WHAT she said, but the depth of cocky snobbery in how she said it. When she paused, I finished my sentence, "I've noticed golf carts here, can I use one or rent one" Same girl rudely told me that those aren't theirs, still making me feel like a useless piece of shit.
That girl told me "out of the goodness of my heart, I'll deliver it to you after work but I don't have to do that I'm just being nice". I couldn't believe that she was saying kind words with such head bobbing snobbery and " mean girl" tone combined.
I NEEDED her help but wasn't going to accept help from someone talking down to me like I was an annoying begger. I told her that I felt like she was being mean and I'll do it myself.
In my state of hurt and in tears, my already poor eyesight blurred, and I took a wrong turn then got lost on the way to my site. Heavy wood on my shoulders, disabled hungry child, and small dog in hands, thankfully someone who lives there found us and helped by driving us in their golf cart to the site. The walk would have been much further than I thought. Thank you kind person.
The next day, I went to reception to charge my mobile and decided I'd like to write in my notebook while waiting. I didn't have a pen. I went into the store and asked if they had a pen to purchase, no. So I asked if I could borrow one of the million they had. I was in the process of buying a $10 scavenger hunt kit and was sitting outside while the mobile charged. The rude receptionist from the day before ACTUALLY HESITATED and did NOT want to lend me a pen after I'd paid for 3 camping nights, 2 bags of wood, multiple treats, drinks, and more. (Let's not speak of the cabs and gear outside of what I spent with Rideau Acres). The girl finally allowed me to use a pen but not before asking me how long I'd be with the cheap item and behaving like I was asking for her first born child. ---- I didn't even want nor used the scavenger hunt kit.
Later that day, reception informed me that the boat attendant was there until 6. THEY DID NOT TELL ME THAT I MUST GET THE WATER VEHICLE BY 5:00pm! We showed up at appx 5:10 to get a peddle boat or motorboat but we're unable to get the device after 5pm, if even only for a half hour. HAD I KNOWN, we would have arrived sooner. The boat was part of the entire trip plan and being inadequately informed deeply affected the quality of my Daughter's first camping trip and my plans and expectations.
That very afternoon, I had called reception to ask if it was ok for them to let the cab in, they said they would and it was no trouble. When the cab driver arrived and went into the office, no one was in the office ( the cab driver said). I called reception, they said the cab driver was not there. I called the cab company and they told me that the driver was in fact at reception. It turned out that another camper had to use their key fob to let the driver in. At that point it was 8:20pm, my tent was down and I had no shelter for my daughter or dog. If the driver left, the company wouldn't have sent another vehicle and I'd have been trapped in the darkness without a proper setup. My Daughter was scared and sick, we couldn't stay another night.
We did have a nice time in some ways, but it was not even close to what I planned and paid about $500 for (after gear, travel, resources, and fees).
Additional notes:
There are no grates nor rocks at most the sites fire pit (we were unable to cook our food properly and sadly mostly ate chips and bread with burnt "grilled" items
The beach requires that swimmers wear water shoes. My Daughter's feet are lacerated because we were unaware of this
Most the staff were nice.
Variety of site types (waterfront, woods, sunny, shady, Lots of neighbours, few neighbours, etc) is great
Prices of the water & snacks are fair
The duck pond is the highlight! read more
