Hands down, this library has to be my favorite of all the libraries I've been to!!! The selection and options are endless! There's 3 floors including an underground level for children. The underground level has trees planted and it gives the area such a refreshing look and smell. I admire that there is a help section for jobseekers. There's rooms for meetings, there studios for people to work and there's a theater room?! The opportunity this library provides for people to advance in your careers and or businesses is amazing! A fantastic spot to keep kids entertained for an hour or more! My two-year-old had a blast with the puzzles and the dollhouse featuring wooden furniture. For toddlers, there are also larger Lego pieces to enjoy. Older children can have fun with checkers, various board games, and a dollhouse scavenger hunt. read more

This library which highlights South Carolina's capital city does invite the question of what a library even is these days. This one is very much a center for social services; indeed a dedicated social work office is on the top level, which I can't say I've ever seen before. An ambulance was called while I was there for someone who was among the group loitering outside. There were a lot of meeting rooms and children-focused programming, as well as a display of Filipino textile art. Presumably there were also books, and there were certainly computers. It's a large impressive space, albeit one struggling with the identity crisis that all libraries are now. read more

Richland Library Main - Libraries Near Me - Columbia, South Carolina

This is such a beautiful library! I would say that Richland Library Main is one of the crown jewels of Columbia, and one of the best contemporary libraries I've ever been to. Not only does it have a great selection of books, but it has so many cool features as well, like computers, printers, fax machines, and even a wood-working station. They also do a lot of really cool events there, like "Ask-an-Attorney" sessions, meet with a social worker, prepare and edit your resume, gardening clubs, and of course, book clubs. They also seem to have a really cool children's and kid's section that I would have loved when I was younger. Another thing that I was very pleased to see was that they're doing a much better job of cracking down on the homeless population who used to use the library as a shelter. I don't want to sound insensitive, but in years past, I would try to use this library, but literally had to step over homeless people sleeping in the aisles, constantly being harassed for money, and creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. Nowadays, they have security guards who are respectful to the homeless, but don't condone inappropriate behavior. This was a welcome change from years past. Finally, I received excellent service from the gentleman working behind the desk (I describe him this way only because I'm not sure if he was an employee or a volunteer.) He was extremely kind, and helped me to find a book that I was looking for very easily. All-in-all, this is a great library, and I'll most definitely be back soon! read more

My girls and I love coming to the library, especially this branch. It's very expansive and has a bit of something for everyone. We like to partake in the scavenger hunts in the kids area. In addition to regular library materials, they also have workshops for creators. The location is wonderful and is easily accessible from any part of town. read more

This is such a great library. It's been a few years since I've seen a public library truly invest in their community and keep up to date with relatable activities. They have a large selection of books of books, DVDs, CDs and records. You even have access to renting video games! In addition to their extensive catolog of books, they have 3 floors of meeting spaces, study rooms and lounge area. And for the crafters, artist, musicians and woodworkers, they provide a community art / crafts space. The rooms are fully stocked with the equipment needed to get any project done. What wonderful afternoon to have the option to do something low key. Firstly, parking is always a situation downtown, however, the lot across from the back or the library had plenty of parking. The kid section is downstairs accessible by the elevator or escalator. It's a pretty spacious area and there's small things to do for the children across preschool and grade school age from legos, puzzles, blocks, a shadow hall, and etc. They also have computers for the grade school kids. There's plenty of book options for all ages. There's places to sit and read either in chairs, at table and chairs, or the benches. The librarians were not super friendly, but they did not treat us poorly. In fact, they barely acknowledged us except for maybe one who was really nice. Everyone else was in their own world. It didn't bother me because that means they wasn't bothering us and interrupting our fun and exploration. There's a teen section as well across or perpendicular to the younger kids section. This was my first time in a very long time being in the children's section. I enjoyed it and so did my boys. I would return and now I know what to expect. Naturally, as the main library branch, this place is really fly. Even before living in Columbia I would visit this branch and spend time perusing, or at a lecture or an event. It's always very bright and I've never seen it even bear empty. The staff is good too. I've been visiting more of late to use the Maker space wood area, but they also have video editing, podcast rooms, and meeting rooms for rental. And I didn't get to take advantage of it yet, but the seed exchange is a pretty cool thing they also have. There's something here for everyone which is what makes this such a great location. read more

I love the libraries in SC! Informative, great website, crafting, & how to projects. The staff is very informative and willing to help. They remodeled last yr the inside and parking areas. Ive met some really cool people in the classes/ events they offer. Only issue I have is the smoking and homeless people hanging out inside and out. I did report the issue in the front door and the staff made them move. Not fair for non smokers to have to deal with this issue. Ive never felt unsafe at the library, they do have security monitoring walking the floors. I always try to make it to the special events or collabs the have with the art center. Our tax money is being spent well at our libraries! Also check out the website for more info. Best library I've ever seen. And i just moved from chicago so that says a lot lol. ;)

This is a wonderful beautiful library, and always was when library staff is on point. I have two issues that needs to be solved in order to gain five stars. The first issue -I frequently visit , and there are members who help me do my research for my law office and they are highly qualified for full time employment and still part-time and/are shelving books. I feel there is some nepotism, and hiring of family and friends. I researched and asked questions to employees and all do not have the experience, and they were hired full time. I will contact the Richland County Board on the hiring practice, degrees need to be reviewed in human resources and they are the one's that need the full time positions. The second issue-The city should do something about the homeless sleeping and laying around on the grounds. It really makes you not want to use the computers or sit in the soiled chairs. It is the tax payers who are at a disadvantage and cannot access with without being scared to- enter the front or side doors with family and kids. The security should have the power to clear the front and side doors. Also after hours, the Mayor, Richland County, City Council, and Columbia Police should not allow the homeless to be sleeping, urinating on the grounds and behind the garbage dumpster. It has been seen, and nothing is being done. The books, videos, etc should not be taken out of library if you cannot verify shelter identification, school, or job. Again, you ask for penny tax? Nothing is being done. We are the tax payers and something need to be done. read more

This library is my third place. From the great selection of books, awesome staff, and highly accommodating amenities, this library is one of the coolest public spaces I have ever visited. Before the renovations, it was a neat pace with a lot to offer, but now it is THE best. It's got books, DVDs and Blu-rays, audiobooks and play-aways, CDs, magazines, newspapers. It has maker-spaces with free classes offered to the public. It has toys and games and comfortable spaces for children to work and play. It has a space for parents where they can do schoolwork, apply for jobs or work on other things in the same space as their children without annoying other patrons. There's an area of the library that specializes in local history. There are private rooms and meeting rooms and conference rooms, all that can be reserved by anyone with a library card and an ID (mostly for free). The bathrooms have water bottle fountains and the super cool fusion air blade hand dryers. This is one of my favorite things about Columbia. It's my go-to when there are tough issues with my son, when I want to learn something new, or when I want to take my kid to a happy place. Home, work and Richland Library Main. read more

So much natural light and it just feels airy. I love reserving the study rooms for meetings and study groups. I also love the ability to return books without having to get out my car. I love this library! I pretty much grew up here~ I remember coming here with my mom and all we did were read awesome books. They have probability the biggest selection in South Carolina. The bottom floor is my favorite still. I get my books and still read them there. I feel like the librarians are also more friendly?.. Con: there's a lot of homeless ppl. Don't be surprised if someone asks you for money here. read more

This place is beautiful and has so many different activities for children and families. The reason I'm giving it only 3 stars is because most of the staff working behind the desk are super ready to be rude or correct someone's child. I've never been in a library where the librarians go out of there way to keep the children from enjoying the facilities that their parents' tax dollars pay for in abundance. read more

Only have been to the Children's part of the Library on the ground floor, but was impressed. It was clean, had multiple Librarians on the floor and different tables for hands on crafts. I have to highlight one Librarian in particular- Angel really was! She helped me constantly from running around looking for books my kids asked about, set me up with a temp card and even bagged my books for us, offering to help me out to the car! Very impressed by her kindness!! read more

I've never been to this library, since I always used the one at USC. I am so glad I decided to come here. I came in and went to the Library Card desk. It was very easy to sign up and I had immediate access to the library. The lady at the desk even gave me an intro on what the library has to offer. I got a map of the library too. After signing up, I wandered to the 2nd floor, where a reference librarian greeted me and gave me another nice introduction to the library. The librarians are really nice and helpful here! The library is very modern and spacious. There are at least three levels (maybe 4). Tons of books. A huge section of periodicals which probably has every magazine subscription in the US. The third level is dedicated to a History room and a Career Center. All three floors have computers, and there are a lot of people using them. Sometimes there is a wait. The first floor has a 20-minute limit and the top floors have a 3-hour limit on computers (all HP I think). The library offers tons of programs/talks from career-related, sewing, book club, history, music, and more. They have lots of stuff for children too. I docked one star because: Most of the tables were taken by others, so I had to wander around a bit to find an open spot. The computers are also kind of limited because there are a lot of people using them. Also, I did feel a little uncomfortable, because there were some homeless-looking people hanging out at tables not reading or doing anything. (After living in LA, I'm just weird about that.) There are a lot of people hanging out outside the library too. (Pretty sure I saw a drug deal. Ironic that the police department is a few blocks away.) read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. They have an awesome collection, but lately they've downsized it, and made more room for meeting spaces. They also wasted a bunch of money on re-branding the place, and then turned around and wanted more tax money to pay for remodeling. Overall the place is pretty good but I miss their periodicals department, also what happened to the new teen collection? The programs for children, and the adult ones are all really good, and the librarians seem pretty into what they do. I'd still recommend going to one of the branches if you can. read more

This place is okay as far as libraries go. It has a decent children's selection and it seems like it has plenty of resources and seminars for whatever your tastes may be...from debating gun control to job resources. It's a decent size and the workers are friendly and always willing to help. The things I don't like is its not very serene and well, quiet. I've come here before to try and get work done and just can't. There's no places to sit where you can have privacy or just get comfortable and read. Even the cubicles have short sides so you can see the person sitting next to you. There's no comfy chairs located throughout the library to get away from everyone and just relax. All the seating is condensed and this place can get really crowded. I love that there are a lot of resources here to help people get back on their feet or even that this can be a place for people to come in and use the computers but sometimes you just want to get work done in peace or even just sit and read (in a library, surprising) and there's no where to do that. Also, I think their teacher's program is really flawed and sucks. I live in Columbia and teach at the school on the military base. Because I'm not in a Richland I or II school I can't be a part of their teacher's program. This is one of the only places I've lived or been to where this is the rule. Most places actually want children and teachers to have access to resources and programs they may not usually be able to use or afford. Plus its a good source of revenue for the library. So this gets three stars because it's a library and the workers are really great but I"m not a huge fan of everything else. read more

Even though I am not a resident of Richland County, I have been utilizing their career center the past few weeks. I am currently unemployed, and they have a section devoted to anything career related. I have taken advantage of the free interview practice the past couple of weeks, since I am not good at interviewing. They also have a slew of other things you can take advantage of relating to your career search (seminar wise). I am meeting later this week with one of the career coaches, in hopes that she can help me with some other things I need help with as well. read more

I've been living in Columbia for about a year and just made it over to the public library, and wow was I impressed! Maybe it's just been awhile since I've been to a library, but everything was so state-of-the-art, automated, and they even rent movies from a DVD kiosk! There were a couple gentlemen hanging out playing chess, and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. read more
