I was not impressed with the food, the service was ok, the place seems a bit out dated and run down, food was not that impressive I felt it was too greasy the whole experience made me feel like I was in boot camp and someone just slopped my food on my plate and yelled next. Loved the fried chicken! I was so hungry for a home cooked meal after 2 weeks in a hotel. I stumbled across Richards and ordered the half chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. The menu states the chicken is crunchy outside and moist inside and it was exactly as stated. The potatoes and gravy matched perfectly and overall my meal tasted like the chicken my Mom fried with love. Now the hubby ordered the BBQ Beef Brisket Basket. That's a mouthful and pretty much consistent with the amount of brisket on the sandwich. It was chopped brisket and could not have been a full ice cream scoop of meat. He doubled the meat in one side and threw away half the bun. The wedge fries were good and thankfully I ordered more chicken than I could eat. He always likes to help me finish off my food anyway. We did try the Apple dumpling but neither of us was impressed. Overall, we would return. He said he would defiantly order the fried chicken next time and stay away from the dessert table :) So happy to stumble across restaurants of this quality. read more

I was in Decatur, Indiana this weekend for a conference and found myself wanting to go for something beyond the usual chain restaurants.To be clear, Richard's Family Restaurants is a regional chain with right about 14 restaurants mostly in Northeastern Indiana. I'd been to Richard's before as I do fundraisers all over the state and, as I recall, my response has usually been fairly favorable if not particularly dazzling. The basic idea behind Richard's is to offer good food at decent prices. If I had to describe it, I'd call it "down home" but not quite up to "Southern Cooking." I was greeted by a friendly face and promptly escorted to a table. The restaurant is fairly wheelchair friendly, but it also wasn't that crowded and I had no problem maneuvering around. My server, whose name I didn't catch, was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. In fact, it's really the server who gets Richard's a three-star rating, because without her I have to say that I found the food nicely priced but still disappointing. I ordered a chicken strip basket that came with cole slaw and french fries for $4.29. I added an iced tea to it and ended up with a meal just over $6. It's definitely a good price. The cole slaw came out first. While I'm not a fan of super creamy cole slaw, this slaw was surprisingly dry to the point that I wondered if it had been sitting out. It wasn't awful, but it was definitely on the low end. I'd heard the folks at the table next to mine talking positively about the chicken at Richard's, so I had high hopes. I found the chicken strips to be disappointingly bland and a lot like the ones you'd find in a plastic bag at your grocer. Again, they weren't awful but they were disappointing. Finally, the fries were of the thinner, almost shoestring (but not quite) variety. Again, they tasted like something that would come out of a bag. If I were to rate this Richard's based solely upon its food, there's no question it would be a two-star restaurant. However, my server was friendly and attentive and after a 2+ hour drive to the city that was precisely what I needed. So, I'm going to lean towards a bit of generosity and serve up a 3-star rating. This would be a decent enough meal if you're in a rush and on a budget, but even in a smaller city like Decatur there are better options. As one of the other reviews here noted, it seemed like their major clientele were senior citizens. read more

Decatur, Indiana: My daughter and I went to Richard's Sunday for breakfast. We were seated just before 11:00AM. They have a very limited breakfast menu after 11:00AM, no pancakes, french toast or sausage gravy. They did however agree to let us order from the full breakfast menu because we arrived just before the 11:00AM cut off. I got biscuits and country gravy and bacon. The biscuits were on the smaller side, kind of like Pillsbury, but they were good. The gravy was really good. The bacon was crispy as ordered. The server was friendly and checked on us frequently. Breakfast for two people was $12.00. I would go back for and early breakfast, but after 11:00 I will go somewhere with more variety. read more

I've only been for breakfast. They are your typical breakfast place. The service was fast. The refills kept coming. The food was good...but nothing extra special. Ham Steak & hash browns, Cod Basket, Salmon Patties & Brussel sprouts were all very good. Coleslaw was really good as well. I had the Salmon Patties deep fried, and the Brussel sprouts were season and cooked perfectly. The apple dumplings... HOLY COW, they are amazing! Covered in caramel sauce and served warm with ice cream. Service was friendly and prices were very reasonable. Not a complaint from this group. read more

Yeah - I'm kind of a Richards fan - at least on the fried chicken and the breaded tenderloin sandwich. The two of us stopped at 7:30 on a Friday eve. Not busy and not surprised - most of the crowd probably hits this place at 4:15p - if you know what I mean. We both chose breaded tenderloins - she with fries - me with salad bar. I eye-balled the salad first having been stung before. Pretty freshly made up this go 'round - not a huge selection - but this is what passed for a salad bar circa 1979 (as it was it is). Both sandwiches served piping hot quickly from the fryer. Tasty, thin breading, thicker pork with a nice bite (not beat to death). No complaints. $13.50 all in w/ tip. Here's the key to tolerating the Richards chain - think of it as a dive and you won't be disappointed with the outdated decor and ripped vinyl upholstery seats. This isn't fine dining but the food (at least what I gets) is perfectly fine and priced well. (and I remember Ember's when I was a wee lad - and it was a fave) read more

We had dinner there and my husband really enjoyed his hamburger steak and home fries cooked with onions were fantastic! The petite grilled chicken with onions mushrooms and cheese was just ok - the service was great - I would go there again. read more

Decatur's best kept secret! We have visited Richard's several times and enjoyed it every time. The food is down to earth as are the prices. Great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. My husband had great meatloaf as well as chicken pot pie on another occasion. I'm on a special diet and they accommodated me very well. I had a great grilled salmon steak with salad done just as I asked. The staff is friendly. The service is fast. We really enjoy eating here. They have really good burgers! We usually get the big and juicy with everything on it! So good! Also, they have really good soups! Our favorite is cheesy cabbage. My only compliant is the service. They have a server that is not very nice and we seem to get her often. They also have amazing pie's! Also, they have little toys for the kids! This is the worst restaurant we have eaten in in our lives..waited 10 minutes for a waitress to bring us menus, 10 more to bring us coffee, she took our order, and then came back later and she asked us if she had actually taken our order. My burger came with absolutely nothing on it. I finished my dinner but apparently they forgot to put my husbands order in ...it finally came 45 minutes later, but it wasn't what he ordered. I have been coming to the Richards restaurants for over twenty years and had the worst service here today. The waitress ignored us for 15 minutes with very few customers. I ordered my favorite meal, biscuits and gravy. Which normally are the greatest ever but this time they put chicken in it! I told the waitress and she argued with me. Worst experience at Richards ever! I will not be coming back to the Decatur restaurant. read more
