Great bbq at a great price. The meat melts in your mouth, unlocking a cascade of savory flavors. The portions are large, and relatively inexpensive. Definitely adding this place to my rotation of go-tos. The only downside - I wish they had more sides, especially cornbread. read more

First time at Ricewood (finally) at the recommendation of many friends. Omg this place is amazing. It's so good. I'm still shocked. Presentation wise, the food looks good. But once you dig in, it's hard to stop. I got the brisket rice bowl (the spare ribs was sold out) but I couldnt be happier. The rice is soft and chewy and very well seasoned. The brisket had some burnt ends that were to die for. When we ordered by phone, the guy apologetically said that they had to double their brisket prices. As a customer, this kind of transparency wasn't needed but was refreshing to hear. You can tell the folks at Ricewood think through customer interactions. We were happy to pay the double price. I think sometimes at these places I worry if I will have enough food. The rice bowls are FILLING. I couldn't finish it and had enough for a second meal. The other standout was that when you get to the bottom of your rice bowl it is seasoned or drenched in sauce. Yummy. Broke up the rice flavor in a good way. Ricewood is a welcome addition to Ann Arbor's food scene. I've sampled a few items on their menu, but they're usually sold out of a lot of things by the late afternoon, especially on Fridays. Their brisket is good, both from its flavor profile as well as the aesthetic point of view - particularly the bark and the smoke ring. They also have good burgers, which are usually offered on Fridays. You can't go wrong with the classic burger! They have an active social media page where they frequently post updates and visuals, so it's a good way to stay informed with what's going to be on the menu for that day or week. It might seem pricey, but that's just the case with barbecue in general. Certainly worth trying! read more

I have been to ricewood dozens of times, and I have tried many things on the menu. The main items are a sandwich or rice bowl, and you can supplement with their small but flavorful condiment-like side, and extra meat if you wish. You go here for the brisket and ribs. If you are seeking out pulled pork or chicken, this is not the right place for you. These items are okaaaay, but they pale in comparison to the brisket and ribs, so they are a comparatively bad value. The ribs are the most consistent thing on the menu. They are always perfectly seasoned, perfectly smoked, and nice and meaty. They come off the bone easily, but they don't fall off themselves, and they are tender, but also have a nice chew to them. The rub is not a traditional texas style situation -- there are asian influences in there, but this is not a bad thing. They are outstanding, with or without the supplied bbq sauce. All other ribs I eat for the rest of my life will be compared to these. If you're going to get a side with these, I recommend the cucumber. The brisket is a bit of a conundrum. The seasoning is always spot on, with some nice szechuan peppercorn in the crust, but depending on the cook, rest time, and where on the brisket your order has been sliced from, your enjoyment level can vary quite a bit. I like my brisket fatty and moist, and when my serving of ricewood brisket has these characteristics, there is little other brisket (or other bbq for that matter) that can compare to it. That said, when I get a lean cut, it is often dry and needs quite a lot of sauce to get to the somewhat enjoyable stage. Unfortunately, you have no control over where your meat will be cut from, so you get what you get. It's like flipping a coin, where you will be very happy if your coin says moist and fatty. I like the brisket with the chili crisp side. I prefer the rice bowls to the sandwiches. Rice, and the soy vinegar flavor they dump on it, goes well with the asian influence in the rubs they use. There is enough rice in the rice bowls to feed two, so if you don't mind sharing, get a brisket rice bowl and ribs on the side (or vice versa). This is one of the best two-person lunch orders in town. If you are seeking brisket, they tend to run out before dinner time, so head there for lunch (or call ahead) to get your fix. I want to give it 4.5 stars, but I am rounding up to 5 because that number seems more appropriate than 4. The lost half star stems from the inability to select the fattiness level of your brisket, and the overwhelmingly high ratio of rice to meat in the bowls. Still, it's by far the best bbq in Ann Arbor, and possibly in Michigan. read more

The atmosphere is super cozy and inviting inside, and their meat just keeps getting better and better. My standard order: Brisket rice bowl with cucumbers and 50/50 sauce on the side. I can't believe it took me this long to visit Ricewood, but I'm glad that they are now inside, because I firmly believe that barbecue, and life in general, is better when you're not freezing your butt off outside in the middle of a Michigan winter. We decided to stop at Ricewood for a late lunch after moving our friend into town. We realized on the way there that they would be closing within 10 minutes of us arriving (they close from 2-5 pm every day) and were worried about inconveniencing them, but quickly realized upon arriving that this is a counter-service situation and we would be ordered and have our food before 2 pm anyway. Unfortunately, they only had pulled pork left, though that is probably what I would have ordered anyway, so it didn't phase me much. I really like the York space- it has a very cool coffeehouse vibe, and lots of delicious-looking pastries and retail wines to choose from. However, because of said coffeehouse-vibe, many people were obviously parked at their table for the day with laptops open, and we struggled to find a place to sit, ending up on a narrow "bar" near the Ricewood window. My pulled pork and rice with sesame cucumbers bowl was delicious. The "medium" spiciness (they offer no spice, medium, and hot), was hotter than I expected, so be aware. Bottles of barbecue sauce (one type) are on the table so you can add as much or as little as you want. The portion was so large, I grabbed one of their handy lids and took the rest home for lunch the next day. While this was probably the best barbecue in Ann Arbor, I thought it was a little pricey for what it is: self-service (order at counter, find your own seat, get your own water, etc.), limited menu (4 types of meat max, but often run out, plus no sides other than chips), and limited hours (closed 2-5 pm every day). That being said, I will definitely be back (earlier in the day, so I can try some brisket) for my next barbecue fix. read more

Delicious, delectable hole-in-the-wall (literally) inside York. We keep wanting to try more but by dinner time, all of the meat is almost sold out! We usually order a pulled pork bowl (adding all of the bombs, of course). Bombs are add-ons like marinated cucumbers or house-made kimchi. My favorite part of the experience is the pineapple bbq salsa! One time I was blessed enough to try their PFJ sandwich special. I tried the brisket bowl from Ricewood this past week for the first time, and I was quite impressed. The bowl mixture was saturated with barbecue flavors with an asian spin. The generous portion of meat was perfectly cooked with tiny charred bits, which I loved. The rice is rather chewy, as if it were overcooked, but somehow it still worked when mixed. My only issue is how sour the rice got towards the bottom. I know rice vinegar is sour, and it worked amazingly at the beginning, but the last few bites were so sour that it was one-dimensional. Nevertheless, the majority of the bowl was amazing, so I have no regrets. There were firepits in the back courtyard area for outdoor seating as well, which I thought was a nice touch. Next time, I want to try the pork shoulder, or if I'm lucky, their burger. You have to order that on site, so the line was already wrapping around the inside of the store before they even started serving them! Overall - tender brisket with asian flair and complex flavors, but painfully sour final bites. Steep prices ($16 for a single bowl), though surprisingly filling. Outdoor seating available. Quality of meat is very good! I've only had the beef brisket and it never disappoints. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and gets very packed as soon as it opens! The rice is sometimes hit or miss though. But in my opinion, the meat and sauce make up for it! read more

Where to begin... I've accidentally ended up at Ricewood after going on errands during lunch... even though I had a sandwich, I was feeling hungry and after passing by, made a U turn and stopped by. Luckily, there was no line when I pulled up... sadly, they were out of the pork shoulder... so I went withe the brisket, spicy. It only took few minutes for them to prepare my food, as they were putting it together, I poured some of the BBQ sauce into the cups, grabbed some napkins, forks, got my food and headed back to the office. That 10 minute drive was killing me with the smokey smell in my car (moments like this, I wish I had google self driving cars!!). So in a bowl, I had two scoops of rice, 1/2lb of briskets with spicy sauce poured on top and it came with pickled cucumber. Brisket - the meat was tender, easy to eat with fork. Dipping in the BBQ sauce gave it the extra flavor. While I enjoyed the brisket, one chunk of the brisket I got was dried out and hard to eat, but I won't let that deter me from visiting again. BBQ Sauce - very bland... could use some more seasoning.... Pickled Cucumber - not bad... I definitely could eat this all day. On a personal preference side... if it was little sour, I'd be in heaven! Rice - I recall reading that it was lime cilantro flavored rice, but what I received today was your standard rice... not sure if there was a change since they opened. Overall, not bad... I will be back to try the shoulder and the ribs. Parking is decent, they do have outdoor seating and I do believe you can go into one of the other stores there to eat as well. Just had my first visit to Ricewood of 2018!!! It was phenomenal and I don't know what took me so long to get there. My cousin and I were in a BBQ kind of mood and headed to Ann Arbor to get our fix. Ricewood is very popular and if you want their food you need to be punctual, they open at 11am and often sell-out by 12:30-1pm. We made it to the truck in the "nick of time", as we were the final 2 rice bowls before they sold out for the day. I typically order brisket, but they only had pork left, so I had the pork. Mouth watering smoked pork with an amazing flavorful bark, made my eyes roll to the back of my head! I really love these rice bowls. Ricewood makes barbecue rice bowls that are second to none and a true culinary treasure in A2. Simple menu with rotating specials and your staples of ribs, pork, and brisket. When they have it, the turkey breast is a great vehicle for their spicy sauce with kimchi and/or cucumbers. Hard to eat a whole bowl on your own, but it's good enough where it happens all the time. If you can only go once, get the brisket. Only place I've had brisket on par is Texas. read more
