How to care for and train it, and how to play it. I went from shower singing to singing in public, performing in public within a year and my confidence and my ability grew along with my repertoire. He is a past master at analysis of strengths and weaknesses, reenforcing the former and transforming the latter. One good way to make assessments of people is to see how they treat you when there's no money involved. RHR studios posts regular open meetups (although you have to join their meet up group and register for the event). Roberts meetup takes place at martuni's bar. It's essentially an extension of the school there. So I registered and signed up for The meet up. When I arrived at the location of the meet up, Martuni's staff tried to prevent me from going in there. I explained that I signed up for the meet up and had to show them that there was in fact meet up there which the staff at tried to deny that there was. I was aggressively Felt up by that Martuni's staff member. I can't blame Robert for that. But after I said "please stop touching me," she became agitated, denied that she had touched me, and asked me to leave. So I left. Robert, instead of apologizing and offering to make it up to me, banned me from the meet up group. So that's how he runs his business. I've been taking singing lessons for the past 6 weeks and Robert is great. I have never sang in my entire life (well not in anyway that i thought sounded like singing)- and he has been incredibly confident, kind, and unbelievably knowledgeable in helping me understand where my blocks are (self confidence, sigh) and teaching me that - actually- I CAN sing. My singing lessons thus far have been 1 part knowledge about how the voice works, 1 part practicing technique (and we are starting at the step 1 that is for sure), and 1 part therapy. I am genuinely in awe watching and listening to him do his job. I feel very lucky that I found him as my voice teacher (incredibly enough he was the only voice teacher i found on yelp that actually called me back- it seems it was meant to be). What is particularly cool is that he records all our sessions and then sends them that week for me to practice with over the following weeks and months. Also he makes pretty incredible (albeit interesting) suggestions on how to move through certain blocks (ie go to a shooting range to open my root chakra - which i am fully planning on doing - even as i HATE guns). he just has the knowledge and experience it takes to really make this possible for me- which is really exciting. i couldn't recommend a voice teacher more. read more

I recently moved from Australia and was looking for a new voice teacher. My lessons back home were frustrating me and I felt that I had made little progress so I was hopeful but my confidence was low. Robert teaches the Garcia-Marchesi method which was a first for me but I noticed immediate results. Doing the exercises and practices a few weeks on I started feeling like singing was much easier and more natural. I found Robert through a recommendation and I can't recommend him highly enough. Not only is he bounding with positive energy, but for the first time in years I left the first lesson with a sense of reward, purpose and confidence that my vocal aspirations weren't just pipe dreams. In my opinion he exemplifies what a teacher should do - mentor by example and inspire his students to be the best. I also attend the weekly group class which is a different dynamic to the one-on-one and I'd recommend if you're serious about improving your technique to do both. You really won't regret it. I have been working w robert since nov 09, taking group vocal voice lessons and one on one. Hes a great singer (Garcia Marchesi trained) fantastic teacher aswel as a producer not mention a great mentor. hes detail orientated, patient and innovative with overcoming challenges. Hes is very resourceful, direct, honest and holds u accountable to ur goals If you wanna really learn how to sing and actually do something w it, hes the guy w wanna work with. I've been learning from Robert for two years now. If you're an aspiring crooner in San Francisco, his studio is where you need to be. I'm convinced. If he tells me to take a deep breath, tilt my chin down, cross my eyes, and hop on one foot, I don't question the man. I know that some beautiful note is about to transpire, even if it takes a bit of his patience and several attempts on my part. Before Robert's expertise, I had never been particularly good at singing. Now, after having taken his vocal workout class, I'm better. I started off a wimpy vocalist; now I have more control over my breath and my nerves. I like working with Robert because of his character. A songwriter who's never taken more than one music history class and a few piano lessons as a child, I was worried about not having earned the key . . . in which I'm now capable of singing. While working with him, I never get that "duh" feeling in the pit of my stomach when some unfamiliar musical term or industry name comes up. He accepts me for the musically inclined-but-lost student that I sometimes am. He's professional, talented, and knowledgeable. If you're looking for a vocal coach, don't confuse the three. read more

I have been studying with Robert for about a year and a half, and I must say, the technique he teaches works. I had been singing for years but always had issues with pitch... to the point that I figured that while I loved to sing, I couldn't really do it. How wrong I was. I studied with a couple of other voice teachers before Robert, and what they taught me was very helpful. I realized that I can, in fact, sing, and I learned a lot. Working with Robert, however, has taken me to the next level. Through Robert's direction and the Garcia Marchesi technique, I have learned to better engage my breath and better control my tone. And lo and behold, my pitch has improved well above the progress I made with my other teachers. I've also been getting some out of control vibrato in hand. I still have a lot to learn, and by no means will I say that Robert is better than every other voice teacher out there, but if you do the work, what he teaches is very effective. Plus, he's got a great sense of humor and makes the lessons entertaining.... so you'll find yourself laughing while you learn. At least I do. read more

I had never taken voice lessons but had always wanted to and so in October/November 2009 I bit the bullet and joined the Vocal Workout class. These group lessons draw upon Yoga, other core strengthening exercises and the Garcia Marchesi technique to build up breath control and muscle memory. Who would have thought that singing would have required so much work? Anyway, the classes are a lot of fun and my fellow students ranging from the complete novice to experienced professionals are a talented and dedicated bunch! In addition to the Vocal Workout classes I have been taking private lessons with Robert; these too are a lot of fun and we work on a range of music that pushes my abilities... I have this strange penchant of selecting difficult songs. As for Robert himself, he is very energetic and passionate about his craft. If you don't like to be challenged, he isn't the teacher for you; if however, you want to extend your boundaries and improve your technique then I can recommend nobody better! As cheesy as it sounds, if I'm having a bad day my classes (both private and group) always cheer me up. Not sure if it's all the breathing or the camaraderie but either way, I come away with my spirits lifted... read more

Robert is a wonderful teacher! He imparts the skills of singing and performance AND encourages each student to believe in and embody his or her goals and dreams. Ability to SING doesn't assure an ability to TEACH singing - fortunately he has both, so that he can demonstrate the techniques he is instructing. Always constructive and supportive in feedback. In particular, he has a remarkable ear for hearing what is happening in the voice and being able to amend difficulties with vocal and physical exercises. Oh, and did I mention that we laugh a lot in the sessions and classes? Definitely not all fun and games, there is plenty of work required, but never boring or rote. In addition to learning how to use my natural voice as a singer, I am also learning how to avoid straining it or causing damage to my vocal cords or larynx. Important, since I am planning to be singing until I am 99. I also attend the Wednesday night weekly vocal workout classes - great training, and equally important, a great way to connect with other singers and enjoy the comaraderie of a group of really interesting and fun people... Final comment: While I would recommend Robert as a vocal coach for adults, he is especially a great teacher for younger students as someone who can also be a strong ally to the parents of a talented teen. He knows the business of voice and performance, and how to safely navigate the development of vocal, performance and business skills. His manner is approachable, trustworthy, and protective of his students in a supportive and helpful way - Very important for young, impressionable, talented kids. read more

Never taken voice lessons before, but this guy makes it easy to start. He's very encouraging and supportive, which are good qualities for teaching something most people are so apprehensive about. Whatever your aspirations are, he can help you realize them. The lessons really helped me to overcome this curse of introversion that had been dogging me for years. Robert Robinson is the best vocal trainer ever. I'm a gospel singer which demands an exceptional amount of vocal stamina. I didn't know what it what it was not to be hoarse after every performance. I've trained with Robert for the last few months and I haven't lost my voice since. My vocal range is greatly expanded. Through his use of the Garcia-Marchesi techniques, I've learned to sing with greater volume and tone with less effort. Thanx to Robert , I'm able to do much more in my familiar territory of the gospel world. Also in my new found love of the theatre. We all screw up, right? I mean, doesn't the saying go, "To err is human."? So yes, they screwed up. Was I pissed? You bet I was! Hence my original review. Somehow they got my personal information (I'm guessing Yelp! will give them info to try & resolve issues.) I'd spoken to Robert, who was quite gracious & explained the situation. He'd offered an "olive branch", so to speak, & I took him up on it. When I'd met Robert, he really wasn't what I'd expected, & I'm not even sure myself what I'd expected, but he was very friendly, asked a lot of questions, and gave a lot of good advice. (plus, he lied & said I look 12 years my junior-so that ALONE deserves 5 stars!) There are 2 different options available. But unfortunately I am going thru situations (that I wasn't when I'd originally called) that won't allow me to join Robert on a journey to make Kristin Chenoweth cry. (the ugly cry, too!) End story, cuz I could blather on forever; I believe RHR had good intentions & just f'd up. And they ended up going the extra mile to apologize. If I had the cash to join, Smash might still be on the air! ***Thanks Robert for making it right. I'm glad I didn't end up canceling. I am a beginner singer and to be honest, started taking singing classes to improve my voice and communications skills. Robert is very good at diagnosing voice issues and coming up with exercises to help you work through it. I really enjoy the classes and the time just flies. DO NOT GO TO ANY ONE ELSE. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK WITH THE BEST, then DO NOT GO TO ROBERT. I have Aspergers, and have dealt with TMJ (lock jaw). Out of the thousands of students Robert has taught, he says I was the most difficult to figure out as far as learning style. If I went to any other voice teacher in SF, I know in my heart that they would not know what to do with me. I, and they, would feel defeated. My psychological and medical hishaps made me scared I could not learn to sing. I am energetic and hard to keep up with as a student generally. I was concerned my overzealous, yet rational, nature would deter Robert or make him uncomfortable. Nope, not at all. I do not like people generally, really, but I always love to learn and I love Robert. I also have no problem telling a teacher they suck, if they do. Robert is warm and engaging, and he always tells me about the scientific aspects of the voice. He is one of a rare group of people in the world teaching Garcia-marchesi. He spent many years just learning how to teach, and there is no one in the world better than him. That is not an opinion that is a fact. As I have transformed as a person, Robert has been supportive, protective, and overall one of the best teachers in general I will ever have. I hate working with peoeple that are lazy and do not know their shit - Robert is not just the real deal - he is literally, unequivocally, the best in the world. By all means, if you want to ruin your voice, go to someone else that doesn't know garcia-marchesi. If you think you cannot sing, guess again. I started out with poor breath support, a dampened spirit, a bad sounding speaking voice, and no one believing in my dreams of being bigger than Lady Gaga. f you do not practice, he will not waste his time with you. I am a huge puzzle, and Robert solved me and diagnosed all of the roadblocks to unlocking my voice, and reminds me when I have reservations that I have worked hard and continue to improve my voice every week. - which is THE TRUTH. If I was a major rock star, I would DEMAND Robert, because everyone in Hollywood is going to the wrong teachers. If he can help me get a beautiful voice, he can help you. I witnessed by girlfriend, who was already a good jazz singer improve substantially after taking lessons with Robert. I started lessons myself and have been very impressed with Robert, both professionally and personally. He has a very structured teaching method which is demanding but produces results when followed. His classes are a real workout, yet blend exercises and singing songs well enough. Most notably he has an extremely positive and supportive approach, while not letting any sloppyness go unnoticed. He is very patient and will help a struggling beginner through the uncertainty with never a criticism or negative comment, just focusing and what specifically needs to happen to move on. I've been training under Robert for eight months. I never thought I could sing, but his wife convinced me to have a session with him. I am now, once a month, performing in public.
