Example: The teachings of "forgiveness" in our daily lives, in the Lord's Prayer, "Our Father", in Luke 11:4 People who do not learn to forgive from the heart are generally angry people, hurting others with crime, anger, etc. When we forgive others, the hatred and anger for others enables us to lead happier lives & experience inner peace. Seeking God's grace helps this to come true. This is in sharp contrast to the teachings of "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth".

You become family when attending Calvary Church! The Church teaches straight out of the Bible, no less, no more! They do not make up rules and they teach you how to have a RELATIONSHIP with the Lord and not just have religion. I didn't really understand about the Holy Spirit. One evening, I will never be able to explain it, I was TRULY touched by the Holy Spirit at Calvary. I swear I have never felt more deeply in my heart everyday before that evening! I feel at home here and our Pastor makes everything in the Bible more understanding. Please come and visit, you will never want to go to a different Church!

It has changed immensely, with a new pastor. On the first Sunday I returned, Pastor Marty preached that, "one of his favorite sermons was Jonathan Edwards 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God'. You should all look it up." This barbaric 18th century sermon is one of the original fire and brimstone, you're all going to Hell sermons. Just what I didn't need while wrestling with intense guilt in my life. The next few Sunday's he regularly pressured and pan-handled about paying HIM 10% of your income (tithe to the local church). Infact, the whole season of Lent was to be dedicated to just this practice. After a few weeks of this, I was reminded of why I was disgusted with church and struggled with Christianity. Of course, I am never returning to that church. If ever there was someone to put in my life to help me deconvert to atheism, Pastor Marty Sloan would be that guy.

Instead of offering guidance, he repeatedly told her to "do it properly," but never explained what he wanted her to change. He then began questioning her religion, asking whether she was Catholic or Christian. After she responded that she is Catholic, he said, "then do it properly" she was unsure what he wanted her to do differently, then he said again, "Are you sure you're Catholic?" Again she replied yes, I am Catholic. Shortly before this interaction, the priest had taken the Eucharist away from a young man who had said he was Christian. The priest began scolding him while the young man respectfully was nodding that he understood. The situation was uncomfortable to witness and felt unnecessarily harsh. It seemed like a missed opportunity for a compassionate conversation about the Catholic faith, especially since the young man was attending Mass and clearly showing interest. Although my daughter ultimately received Communion, the interaction was prolonged and uncomfortable. She was not given clear instruction only public questioning about her faith. My daughter approached respectfully and reverently. Being questioned in that way, in front of others, left her embarrassed and shaken. She was crying when we got home, which was especially heartbreaking because she was the one who had asked to go to Mass that day. Reverence for the Eucharist is important. However pastoral guidance should reflect clarity, dignity, and compassion. Interactions like this can leave a lasting impression on young people who are trying to grow in their faith. I hope this feedback encourages more compassionate and thoughtful handling of similar situations in the future.

After being raised in a small Bible church in Elmhurst, and then attending a large church for a…read morebunch of years, I felt lost and disconnected. I wasn't growing, and that's not a good place to be spiritually. I needed to get back to a smaller congregation and connected with others. Attending Compass feels like "home." They have a few other campuses, but this review is of their Wheaton campus. PASTOR/TEACHING: First off, Pastor Jeff Griffin is the BEST pastor I've ever had. Hands down. He's funny, and passionate and often uses props to help illustrate what he's teaching. He is also unassuming, humble and joyful. He doesn't wear a fancy suit and shoes, making you feel you're at a fashion show rather than church! He is just like you and me. He tells of his shortcomings and struggles as a Christian and so you can relate to him. Pastor Jeff also puts scripture verses up on the screens, and then breaks them down into chunks to really study the meaning. This is how I learn best - and I learn something EVERY single week at this church. Compass took over the old Wheaton Evangelical Free Church, and is still non-denominational, evangelical-free church with Biblically sound teaching. It's been updated a bit and feels a little more contemporary than the old church. But just as warm. I'm growing a lot at Compass, and so many of the sermons are very timely in my life right now - I know I am there for a reason. MINISTRIES/ACTIVITIES: They have a wonderful children's program, adult ministries, fun extra activities, a great worship (Nate is awesome!!! He needs to make an album! I also want to set him up with my sister lol), and some very kind, non-judgmental people in administration. They are truly a great representation of Christ. THEY CARE: One thing I have to share is how considerate this church is. I had written on a prayer card that I was having surgery, and after surgery they had "get well" flowers delivered to my home. I'd received nothing from good friends (cards, phone calls, etc.), but I did from my new church. Not long after that, my mother passed away. I briefly mentioned it an e-mail response to a woman who works at Compass. A few days later, I received a beautiful plant with flowers! These sentiments meant SO much to me. The trials I've been going through have been rough, and knowing the church is there for me if I need them means great deal. NIT: Just one tiny nit - and I'm really not complaining. I wish they had a consistent women's Bible study in the evenings. I get home from work at 6pm, and so it would be great to have a 6:30 study that met consistently throughout the year. I have a hard time connecting with other women otherwise. I know they have small groups for couples, and my husband and I are looking to join one. I need to connect more here and hoping to do so soon!
