Head to Falmouth's Old Brewery Yard to find Restaurant MINE. The charming spot offered my partner and I a relaxed, creative dinner featuring moreish Cornish produce.
We began with two crab fritters--crisp to the edge of burnt, packed with white crab meat and served alongside a salty bisque mayo. We understand they're a menu staple, and while we enjoyed them, they were a touch overdone for my taste. On the other hand, the truffle potato skins, which I requested vegan (already gluten-free), were delightfully crunchy, with a truffle aroma that was present but not overpoweringly musky (nobody much likes musk these days, eh?). Alongside these, we were treated to slices of freshly baked, salty bread, with butter for my partner and an acerbic green olive oil for me, kindly accommodating my lactose intolerance.
Our mains were hearty, nodding to traditional cuisines with an elevated touch. The Cornish mushroom ragout came atop crisp polenta, and the cavolo nero brought a pleasing earthiness. We also shared the baked Cornish hake, which arrived flaky and tender, paired with a bean cassoulet and Siberian kale--a green I'd never tried before, but one I'd happily eat again for its beautiful leaves, texture, and taste.
To drink, my partner enjoyed a glass of Tokaji while I had a full-bodied red that stood up nicely to the richness of the ragout and cassoulet. We lingered over our meal in MINE's unfussy, intimate space, where the staff were friendly and attentive.
Altogether, a lovely evening in a lively corner of Falmouth. Tasty food, (mostly) careful prep, and a relaxed vibe. read more
