This restaurant was the highlight of my four day business trip in Conlogne. I felt lucky to have found it. It was our last meal before getting on the train. A week of meat and potatoes was quite satisfactory, being that I am meat and potatoes kind of guy. We had made a effort of avoiding Italian restaurants while in Germany, due to prior horror stories; was talked in to coming here for our last meal.
It was a late lunch and we were the only customers at the restaurant. When I pick up the menu I was instantly disappointed. The selection seemed limited and the English translation did not add any flair. We must have spend 10 mins looking over the menu and no one seemed excited about their upcoming choice. The waiter who was Italian sensed our reluctance, and offered that he would make the choices for us."I will take care of you", which did little to ease our minds, but the ones among us that was more adventurous, soon agreed.
We started with some excellent wine selection, follow by some amazing appetizers, and the amazement continued. Every single thing was beyond excellence. But the pasta was the highlight of my meal. A simple cream oil sauce on aged fettuccine, with fresh truffle shavings. I had a Argentine filet to follow as my main course, and I was more than willing to trade it in for more of the fettuccine. I have had good steak before but I have never had any pasta like it. It was the simplest yet the the most amazing noodles I have ever had. My great regret was not finishing the left over pasta from my colleague's plate (he had a unnatural aversion towards truffles), but etiquette stood in my way.
The meal lasted 2 and half hours, and ended with an equally exciting bill, and prolonged discussion on whether a tip(which was proportionally sizable) was part of the local custom.
In summary, a must try while in Kolon. read more
