We ended up here by a stroke of luck --- the restaurant we were aiming for wasn't open for dinner…read moreyet, and after a round of overstuffed pitas at the Pittaria, I don't see how it could have compared. The owner is really the centerpiece of the place --- friendly, conversant in several languages, and happy to tell how he followed the girl of his dreams to Switzerland 30+ years ago. (The only other staff member we met has an annoying affinity for loud vacuum cleaners). Rolling in post-hike on a Saturday, the owner mentioned he was out of several fillings; in particular, the eggplant-and-peppers Betenjan that grabbed my eye first wasn't available. That turned out to be fine, as the standards he did have were excellent. Our group ended up with a mix of lamb Shish Kebab, veggie Falafel, and simple Hummus. All were heavily laden with extras --- veggies, lettuce, a sweet chutney that nicely complemented the main flavors, and hot sauce to order. The hummus and falafel options are variations on a theme --- either a large scoop of hummus and two falafel balls, or 6+ falafel balls and a small dollop of hummus. The lamb in the shish kebab is in large, tender chunks, and nicely roasted. The bread is much more substantial than many pitas --- more of a crusty roll, but so filled with goodies that the ratios are still right. Drinks are fairly standard --- a few beers and sodas, boxed Ayran yogurt drink, and a giant urn of oddly spiced tea by the glass. Definitely a must-eat for a day around Solothurn.

Okay so never again breakfast here. I was fair and gave it 3 chances, trying to request the changes…read morethat I wanted. For one, Switzerland always has a problem with customer service and here is one example. When asking for the toast to be toasted a bit longer, the older woman working here said "it's always crispy" I followed with "for me it's not, which is why I'm requesting it. You just have to put it in the toaster longer" to which she replied "I'll try" It was darker in color on one side and completely soft on the other. Either she doesnt know how to work a toaster or they need a new toaster. I already knew better than to try the pancakes again because they are made ahead of time, allowed to be served room temperature and are as dense as a hockey puck. The bacon was fried to a burnt crisp and the hashbrowns were not hashbrowns, they were Rösti. Even Rösti usually has more crispy bits on top. This was simply grated boiled potatoes! Eggs are hard underneath...must I go on??! Oh the coffee! I couldn't even make it past the first few sips. The coffee to go in the front of the store is slightly better.

The Zunfthaus zu Wirthen is a hotel and restaurant. I believe this establishment deserves a…read moreseparate review for the hotel and banquet rooms from the hotel. It is a stand alone restaurant in it's own right. In arriving to Solothurn we had a hard time finding the hotel, because from the outside this just looks like it is ONLY a restaurant. You have to walk through the restaurant in order to enter the reception desk for the hotel. I typically avoid hotel restaurants, but this is not a hotel restaurant. Throughout our stay it was clear that this restaurant was a local favourite. We met some very friendly locals who were able to give us some great tips on places to see during our visit in Solothurn. Their is outdoor and indoor seating, and a beautiful banquet facility upstairs. The inside of the restaurant is beautifully done in carved wood, in the typical historical Swiss style. The menu has many choices of local Swiss dishes. The locals we spoke to highly suggested the beefsteak tartare or the flammenkueches (thin crust french style pizza - famous from the French Alsace region). My friend and I tried the mixed starter salad with the small flammenkueches (comes in two sizes small and large). The salad was amazing, and the flammenkueches was the best that I have had in Switzerland. They have a full bar, and a decent Swiss wine selection. In speaking with the locals, this was one of three favourite restaurants in town. The service was also very friendly and timely.
