Arriving as the town was shutting down for the night we happened upon a friendly hotel in Lermoos. We didn't even realize we'd crossed the boarder into Austria until the staff told us. We chatted with the proprietor and his sidekick, old friends that were in a band together in the 60's called The Playboys, who run the establishment and perform there now and then as, "The Old Playboys". All the restaurants in town had closed but our hosts were kind enough to prepare an after hours potato and dumpling goulash and beer before we turned in.

In this sleepy town, there isn't a surplus of restaurants. It's especially quiet during skiing off-season (we were the only ones in the restaurant that night until a group of friends of the owner came in). So we were very lucky to find this place after spending the day on Zugspitze, and we continued the drinking trend. The owners were very friendly and after our party of 8 ordered a bunch of food and drinks, they offered shots of their house schnapps ON the house. We loved that, of course. They offer pretty standard fare here, and I decided to try something I hadn't had before: Jägerschnitzel. Before I started taking German, I had no idea what the words in schnitzel-anything meant, so I didn't know that the meat was the "schnitzel" and you can order it many ways. Up until this point, I'd only tried Vienna-style schnitzel, so I was surprised to see this kind un-breaded and smothered in a savory sauce. It was actually delicious and much less dry than the versions I'd previously tried. I also got to try one of the soups with a speck dumpling in it, and it was yummy!! I wouldn't have been able to finish that soup and my entree, so I'm glad I just tried a bite of it. We finished with a cream cheese strudel which was split between 4 of us. With all the other food and drinks we had, splitting one dessert amongst 4 people was a good choice. Lots of outdoor seating, some quasi-indoor, and some totally-indoor seating for those who want to stay out of the sun.
