At 9:00 pm, Wroclaw's square was hopping with pedestrians patronizing the dozens of restaurants, bars and clubs with their European-style seasonal sidewalk cafes that line the square of this attractive college town of 600,000 making it the third or fourth largest metropolitan area of Poland after Warsaw and Kraków. La Scala, a well-renowned Italian eatery with an attractive outside-awning'd cafe was our choice for the evening. I have dined in many of the Wroclaw's most popular restaurants over the years having been involved in our company's business activities in this region but last night was a first for La Scala. The baked lasagna was the talk of our end of the table and in fact became my choice after sharing a few outstanding appetizers of bruschetta and calamari. I could tell immediately by the full-bodied tomatoes and zesty-sweet sauce on the appetizers that La Scala was for real...a real Italian enclave tucked into this meat-and-potatoes corner of the world. Their signature lasagna was served piping hot in a large baked dish. It's distinguishing feature was its surprisingly light sheets of pasta interlaced with cheese and their prize-winning tomatoey topping. La Scala got the job done in style for our large group last night. Got to throw 'em a quattro.

On the first floor, you can sit and enjoy an espresso or even a beer if that's what you feel like doing. the set up is nice. It looks very modern and has seating for maybe 20-25 people at max. The service is exceptional. We spoke no polish but still managed to order coffee and get the password for their WIFI! Basically... they are patient and friendly. You get a great view of the city from the double door windows. We sat there waiting for our friends to pick us up and take us to the bus station...we were heading to Krakow for our next adventure. Because they tend to always be never on time, we decided to finish our coffee...then order a Carlsberg beer..(yes it was only 10:00 am...but everyone drinks beer all day in Poland!) After about 40 minutes of us starring at the door waiting for them to come in, we decided to grab our stuff and explore the place. Apparently, we were above an old WW2 bunker the Germans had built! We saw a stair way and decided to go down one level... as we approached the door, we realized it was a Pizza place! The waitresses were nice and realized we looked confused so they left us alone as we stared at the patrons eating... a few seconds later, we decided to head up to the coffee shop to see if our friends had arrived... we heard music and saw stairs across the way and instead of going up, we went down another level... to our surprise... THE BUNKER WAS A BAR!!! It was a small bar with seating inside and out side... we were amazed! There were artifacts all over and posters of that showed this was once the entrance to Swidnica (Sv-id-nee-cia). Finally...after about 2 hours of our friends saying "we will be right there..." they showed up. Once we returned to Swidnica, we stayed at the hotel across the street and you better believe we celebrated the night away at Bar Bunker! If you are ever in Poland... this city will enchant you.... for a good time in the city, ask anyone where Bar Bunker is and check it out! Nos Drovia!
