Warning: DO NOT RENT ANYTHING FROM RENT A CENTER YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!
January of 2012 I went to the Rent a Center in East Providence. I rented a bedroom set, a recliner and a TV, a few months later I rented a computer and a blue ray player. I was paying them $183.45 per week. I work for a marketing company and last July the business had a cash flow problem. I called them and explained the situation and asked if I could pay them on Saturday rather than the Friday like I had been paying. They have three phone numbers for me, my cell, my office and my house. I was receiving as many as 12 calls per day and in some cases they would all call three numbers, one right after the other two or three times, without leaving a message. The harassment escalated when I called one week and asked if I could make my payment on the following Friday. When I called to make the payment they would not accept the payment with late fees unless I made the payment that was due the next day. They tried to strong arm me into paying a payment in advance prior to its due date.
Then one morning one of their employees showed up at my house at 8:30 on a Saturday morning. I was told that he wanted me to pay the payment due that day but he was going to go into the house and take a couple of items because he said I had too much stuff. He also said that if I did not let him in the house he would call the local police and have them help him enter my house and take what he wanted. The fight continued because all the things they threatened me with they could not do and I was asked to go to the store and have a conversation with the GM, because I was going to file complaint with the AG's office. Even the GM began telling me that they can have the police enter my house (without a court order) but felt that the person handling my account was inappropriate in his actions and cut a deal with me, gave me a discount and reduced charges in an effort to make me happy. In the beginning of October I had the same cash flow problem for one week. Note my payment was only days late and I was willing to pay the late fees but the harassment began again. The fact is that their collection practices are in violation of the consumer protection act on both the State and the Federal level. I am in the process of taking legal action to recoup my money with is in excess of $7,000.00 in 9 months. You think that a person paying this type of money in a 9 month period they would do whatever necessary within reason to keep the client. So I sent everything back and now they will re rent it to another person.
Overview:
1. They are in violation of federal and state laws under the consumer protection acts. They will point to their contact stating this is what you agreed to when you signed the contract. What they do not show you in the contract is that it states. "all sections of this agreement are in compliance with all state and federal laws, in the event a section or sections do not comply with federal and state laws the section is automatically converted to be in compliance"
2. The quality of the products is far below good, it's junk. The bed I purchased was falling apart within 4 months and my recliner needed to be replaced within 3 months.
3. This company is worse than a loan shark!!!!!!!!!! I wanted an Apple Tablet which retails for $500.00 brand new. After I received the item and the agreement I realized that this item would cost be over $4,000.00 by the time I paid them off.
As a result I went to Aarons, I received a bedroom set that is of great quality and looks good in my house, an electric controlled recliner and rather than a 52" flat screen TV I received a 73" TV. I now pay the same amount ever other week as I was paying Rent A Center ever week.
Suggestion:
If you are now with Aarons, you are getting a great deal and the people there are willing to work with you.
If you have items from Rent a Center and are being harassed by their employees, send the items back, go to Aarons and then file a complaint with the AG's office under the consumer protection act. If there is a lot of money involved get a lawyer and sue them to get your money back.
Rent a Center is a rip off and their business practices are in violation of the consumer protection act on both the state and the federal level. read more
