Two employees arrived at my property after 8pm on a dark Saturday evening banging on my door rather than knocking or ringing the doorbell in an effort to forcibly recover a product that was 2 weeks past due. My phone was broken yet they never attempted to email me or reach out to me during normal business hours at my home.
When I reached out to the store and asked to speak to the general manager I was transferred to Adam Ezell. Adam Ezell identified himself as the general manager (he is not) and as one of the employees who came to my property late on a Saturday evening.
When I asked why they would come to my property that late he claimed that they always make attempts to recover products at night and that it was not unusual.
I informed him I'd be making a payment and when I would be making it and he falsely told me that the product had to be repossessed before I could make a payment and I would have to begin a new contract to get the product back.
He also informed that I'd receive a notice via certified mail that the product needed to be returned and at that point I could schedule a date to return the product.
The next morning Adam Ezell called again asking "when are you going to return MY stuff?" Implying that he owned the merchandise and ignoring the agreement we made for me to schedule a return date after receiving the notice via certified mail.
At this point I felt Adam was harassing me and asked to be transferred to his manager, who I'm assuming is the actual general manager, Brian Black.
I asked Brian Black why Adam was continuing to call me after we had spoken the previous evening and his response was a sarcastic "Because you agreed to pay on your contract and haven't."
I then asked Brian Black if there was any mention of Rent-A-Center being allowed to make collections on Saturday nights, well outside of business hours.
He continued to shout at me that "the contract says you'll pay for your product!"
I continued to ask, "does my contract state that Rent-A-Center is allowed to make attempts to reach me at my home on weekend nights, yes or no?" After 5 minutes of him berating me I was able to get the answer, "no".
I informed him I would stick to the original plan I made with Adam Ezell to schedule a return date for the product after receiving his mail in notice.
Again, I had no intention of returning the product or not paying the rental agreement, as I am looking to finish paying off the product well in advance to avoid interest.
But I was told by Adam Ezell I had no option to make a payment and continue my contract.
After all of this back and forth and constant harassing calls my partner decided she'd like to keep the product so I went online and made the past due payment in the portal with no problem.
Once I made the payment the calls stopped and my contract continued.
So, Adam Ezell lied about my payment options, lied about the return process, lied about his position at the Bloomington rent a center store, and illegally attempted a collection at night outside of business hours.
Brian Black, the supposed GM, yelled and cursed at me as I attempted to gain clarification on their completely unprofessional business practices and perpetuated the myth that I had to return the product and there was no way for me to make a payment.
This staff is completely unprofessional, uneducated, and outright rude.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM.
If I wasn't already several months into making payments I would've returned the product out of spite for their terrible customer service.
I haven't experienced this level of unprofessional behavior from any staff of any corporation. read more
