Rendezvous Hotel Christchurch - Great restaurants abound-like Strawberry Café!

This was one of my favorite hotels in NZ! We stayed in about eight different hotels during our…read moremonth in NZ. It is conveniently located literally next to the Tramway Restaurant and next to several restaurants and boutiques and within walking distance to RE:Start mall, and the Art Museum. Staff was very friendly, helpful and quick to assist us with our luggage. In addition, they were very kind and happy to assist us in locating the sites we were interested in seeing. Our room was very clean, modern and had AC!! In the room were the important conveniences to me- a safe, mini fridge, microwave and hair dryer. Our particular room had a nice huge window with a view of one of the many art murals they have around the city. In addition, they even printed out a notification that I guess was sent to the hotel Informing us of our one way excursion to Queenstown with our pick up time for the next am at our hotel and other specifics which was slid under our door in a nice envelope. I would highly recommend this hotel due for all the above reasons. Their breakfast is fairly good and decent- ranging from cold/hot cereals , fruits to meats/veggies. They even have vegemite and marmite if you've never tried it.

The rooms are nice and the bathroom is newly remodeled. The hotel is actually quite nice but…read moreeverything is on the cozier side. The hotel lobby is quite small, as is the restaurant and the breakfast buffet is more limited than other hotels. The gym has just a few machines and some free weights in it but it has a sauna and two full-size bathrooms for guest to use. Elevators are tiny and take forever to get to you, and they also weirdly malfunction and send you down when you were starting to go up. Overall though, it is clean and modern and a nice hotel.

Loved the location right across Hagley Park, convenient to many places, and they provide free parking. Even though this hotel is a bit pricier than other places I searched, it is well worth it. Many places aren't as nice, not conveniently located, and overnight parking will cost you $$, which you factor into the cost, it's actually the same price. Once we stepped into the lobby, you can feel a certain level of comfortness, elegance, and sophistication. This hotel is not modern, but doesn't feel outdated. There's a distinctive quality. We were warmly greeted by the concierge/front desk person. He was very friendly, helpful, informative, hospitable, and made us feel very welcomed. Our room was a decent size with a lot of natural light coming in. With the park across, you have excellent privacy. One of the perks was the heated bathroom floors! They also FREE guest laundry. That was another reason why I chose this hotel because it was our last stop, and we could do laundry before heading home. One of the housekeepers was really nice and kind. The staff overall were friendly. It's the small details and kind gestures that made our stay memorable, even if it was just for one night. Providing complimentary coffee or tea when we arrived, the extra care and effort when we needed something, and giving us a free teddy (George) bear too! I'll definitely come back to stay at The George on my next visit to Christchurch!

No real grounds to speak of. Hotel definitely geared to those 65+ with decor and piped in scent that reminded me of my papaw. Would elevate to five star if updated.

Breakfree On Cashel - Small desk and stool

A step up from the "flashpackers" hotel but not quite full service, this is in a great location not…read morefar from the central business district. Easily walkable to just about everything in the city center. I spent two nights here. My room on the first floor was "inside" so no noise from the streets and very little noise from the hallway. It was not especially large but I didn't pay for a large room. It has just about all you would expect with plenty of room for storage, a comfy bed, decent shower and the usual coffee/tea service. My only complaint is that the work desk is very tiny with not much room at all. It took a while to work out how to turn on and off the lights. Waaaay too many buttons. Checkin was speedy. Wifi worked well. I did not have breakfast here, getting coffee in the city instead. [Review 363 of 2024 - 16 in New Zealand - 21396 overall]

I'd call it 3.5; a 4 if you don't have mobility issues, and a 3 if you do…read more It seems no one who's written a review is short and / or has a mobility disability. If you have difficulties, this is probably not the place for you. I am struggling here. The beds are ridiculously high; I was told the space underneath is for suitcases. What, are people bringing steamer trunks or a gazillion bags into a two-person room? I strained my back trying (unsuccessfully) to get in the bed. I was told none of the beds were lower (no accessible rooms? Really?). Didn't help that the mattress has a big dent right where one would get in. They were kind enough to bring a two-step stool; once I figured out how to position it so I could get up safely, I was successful. If they didn't have a stool, I'd have to sleep on the floor. The room is small (don't care; had an even smaller one in Shanghai), and there's no window (rooms with windows cost more). Apparently I got some kind of super-saver rate, so there's no daily housekeeping. That's fine with me. There's a mini-fridge and electric kettle. No microwave. The TV screen is at the foot of the bed. There's an outlet by the bed and a weird alarm clock-thing on the wall next to the bed. There's a little desk space and one metal stool. The hair dryer and iron are on a shelf. There's even an ironing board under the bed. No closet, but a few hangers on a bar. Full-length mirror on the back of the door. There is central air and heating, and the place is quiet. The compact bathroom has everything you need in a half-moon kind of frosted glass space. There's a low-barrier step up into the unit. Soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided. In addition to price, there are also other pros, which is why I chose this property. It's a great location; easy walks to a lot of sites, shops, and restaurants. The tram office about three blocks away, and there's a tram stop a short block away. Around that stop is also a stop for the #8 bus, which takes you to the Gondola. The bus to the airport stops around the corner about two blocks away. Staff are friendly and helpful. Laundry facilities are on 2, 3, and 4. It's NZ$4 each for a wash and dry. The front desk has change and ypu can buy wash powder there too. If your room is on the first floor, you need to get a white key card from the front desk for access. Would I stay here again? If I weren't short, and didn't have a mobility disability, then yes. Otherwise. . .I'm not sure. Trying to get into the bed (safely and at all) is a bit of an Olympic event for me. My back still hurts from my early attempts.

She also gave us a map of the area along with hand written notes on the best restaurants nearby. The hotel itself is riddled with history and was originally built in 1861. It has been very well maintained and modern upgrades have made it functional without destroying it's historical charm. Our "Canterbury" room was amazing. Both the bedroom and bathroom were spacious and cozy. There was a large hot-tub style bathtub as well as a very large walk-in shower. You could probably fit 4 people comfortably in that shower!
