Great staff, very helpful with insurance and finding a time that fit with my tight schedule

Finding a counselor that is a good fit for yourself is very difficult. It appears even more difficult when there are two people to deal with in Marriage counseling. I find our counselor(Dr Mijel) to be quite amazing, and she has helped us tremendously. Often throughout the different "topics" of marriage problems, usually one of the spouses truly does need to assume more responsibility. I have found our Doctor never fully chooses sides. Yes she gently tries to pull out the source, but ultimately, she chooses the marriage. Isn't that how a marriage counselor is supposed to be. I have had counselors in the past that push their own opinions onto me- which isn't always so good. She seems to understand that only the individual truly understands what is best for themselves, and she is there to help them discover that. She is a truly insightful doctor. read more

I have been a client at Relationship Institute for 8 months now, and I have never had a better relationship and experience with a counselor. The staff is always friendly and they are really quite flexible with schedules. I have dealt with many issues that don't all fall under the same umbrella but my therapist has been a blessing and really helpful with all aspects. My son and I went to the Relationship Institute for find a way to better our relationship. He has been there before, it was my first time. I had seen a psychologist years ago after my divorce, so I am not totally new to a sitting with a counselor. But this was the worst experience, you could have had a blown up doll sitting in the chair and it would have been the same result! I received during the whole session not one constructive advise, but it was made clear, that as always the mother is to blame! Also very clear, that the person who has been there before and might return and have more sessions is in the right! I would never recommend the psychologist I did see! read more

To be fair, I only went once, and I only saw one counselor there, but I was not impressed and slightly offended by the "care" I received. The staff was very unorganized and reprimanded us for canceling to many appointments even though we had only made and canceled and remade our first appointment. The "counselor" admitted that she had never seen anyone recover from a personality disorder, therefore, I must have never of had one. She guessed instead that I had once suffered from a form of schizophrenia. She made it very clear that our relationship problems could not be helped because my husband lacked motivation and said verbatim "I can't motivate him, no one can". Then she went on to make vapid and asinine suggestions to improve our struggling marriage. As if adding white board to our office would magically cure our problems with procrastination. LIke I said before, I only saw one counselor and cannot comment on the rest, but I would hesitate to send anyone else based on our experience with the staff and counselor. read more

Our therapist always seemed so indifferent toward us. I don't think she was the best fit, but she was one of the few who accepted our insurance, so we were stuck with her. Went for nearly a year, nothing has changed in our relationship. Actually, it got worse. read more

I went to this therapy center to receive help and try to resolve my relationship of 7 yrs! The therapist was a man by the name of Bruce Ford he's in royal oak, first visit he says to end my relationship! If your seeking therapy to try and put your relationship back together i highly recommend to not waist your money on this guy for help! read more

I was really upset with the "interview" process. First of all, I set up a call with Relationship Institute to find out more information about becoming a relationship coach: costs, topics covered in program. Instead I was informed this was an interview. Before I knew it the woman was telling me I wouldn't be a good fit for the program because I wanted to include relationship coaching alongside my health coaching practice! But she did include the cost of the program being $12,000! She wouldn't tell me what the monthly plan was though because she said I wouldn't benefit from that. At this point in the call I was ready to hang up. I felt there were a lot of red flags to this program just from my brief encounter with this woman. Very upset because I was looking forward to possibly including relationship coaching in my practice. I will keep looking though! read more

My then spouse and I came here weekly for more than 3 months. Our counselor was Heidi Looney. Heidi and my spouse shared a private email conversation between the two of them where she talked negatively about me without my knowing. Instead, she just told my spouse to share it with me which of course she did not. That is, until about one hour before our next appointment. Naturally, I was upset and when I challenged Ms. Looney about her professional ism in the handling of the email, she became very defensive and instead placed the entire blame for our relationship problems squarely on me even though there had never been any prior discussion about the problems being solely mine to own. Don't get me wrong, I have my share of responsibility to bear for the relationship problems, but this was clearly a situation where she just didn't like it that I challenged her professionalism and then became obstinate and unwilling to listen to reason. read more

I was excited about working with a new therapist but am disappointed with my experience and reluctant to go back. After a $155 intake session and a $98 second session (I have a very high deductible), I didn't feel a connection with my therapist. She arrived 3 minutes after the scheduled appointment time, explained in too much detail why she was late, talked a little too much about herself, and didn't seem particularly interested in connecting with me. When I expressed concern over having too few friends, she felt the need to mention that she has a "large group of friends" and gave a lengthy explanation (chewing up quite a few of the precious 45 minutes) of how she met some new friends. By the end of the session, I decided to follow the advice I found in many online articles: if your gut feeling is that it isn't the right fit, listen to that feeling. When I expressed my concerns about out "fit", her voice changed and she made a face while defensively explaining her point of view. When I discussed this with the office manager, she wasn't really empathetic about the $250 I had spent so far, or terribly interested in helping me find a new therapist within the practice. I mentioned that she seemed defensive, and that only made her more defensive. My takeaway is that the culture of this office may need adjustment. Disappointed, especially since in every other service transaction, the consumer has some recourse when the service is lacking. read more
