Frankfurt Airport - Busy walkway

Call it a 3.5 with the border control delays due to the new technology, but rounding up…read more I flew in through the new Terminal 3 this past trip. It's very clean and modern, and also very big. Be aware that it's quite a distance away from the other two terminals, so if you have to take the air train between give yourself enough time. Like the other terminals in the airport, expect a lot of walking. They do have moving walkways but the airport is big. Getting through security was fast when flying back, but border control is taking a little extra time with the extra step of the automated machines. (Some of which don't work, which can be especially grating if you have a tight layover) They seem to be experiencing staffing issues because of summer and that made the baggage claim especially slow. Literally had to wait over an hour from the time the plane touched down to when the carousel started delivering bags. Parking can be expensive and a little chaotic with traffic. Overall though a solid airport.

If you are connecting through Frankfurt to another German city, it seems they have the domestic Lufthansa flights gate at Terminal Z and the international Lufthansa flights gate at Terminal A. This will add another intervening passport control between Terminals A and Z and adds another passport control before boarding your outbound international flight in Terminal A before arriving at your gate. If your connecting flights are closer than ninety minutes, you will have to push the pace. If your arriving flight is late you may miss your connection with the additional layer or layers of passport and immigration control. The airport has confusing signage. When you arrive, the signs seem to conflict with the direction in which you should walk. Ask someone to avoid unnecessary walking to make your connection. The signs will also take you, not by, but through the duty free shops. That misdirection is not the most direct path and is a bit tacky for such an airport. You don't need to know German to get around Frankfurt, but the airport could use a refresh in its layout and signage. 3.3 stars.
