Thankfully oyo had one room left, we booked it and it ended up saving us from sleeping in our truck that night. Very clean, great for the price. We were so thankful to find them, and will definitely be booking them next year when we come back.

A spur of the moment trip, a lot of it kind of went sideways but we had fun overall. We stayed here…read moreas a sort of mid point to places we wanted to see and the Expedia reviews were mostly good. It's a small place, old style motel all on one floor, limited parking but not small. All rooms are on the outside in style of the movies Psycho or Identity. The first front desk guy there when we checked in was nice, friendly and fast. Even gave us a good recommendation for margaritas in the area at a place I will review later. The second lady was not as friendly. I went to get TP, I went, didn't call or ask them to bring it. Requested two rolls and she looked at me like I asked for a refund or something so outrageous she couldn't comprehend it! It was a bigger room than expected and 2 king beds. Clean on the inside. The outside looks a bit worse for wear but not awful. But pulling up it looks bad, Shana points out had she been alone traveling and only saw the outside coupled with the rooms all being out facing she would not have stayed, fairly or not first impressions can mean a lot. But there were moden day cameras up through out but you wouldn't see that either at a glance nor know who if anyone is monitoring them. There were also so many bugs and even nests for birds on lights. Also a giant dragon fly! Still the room was clean and organized. We did have one bug we saw but it was one over 3 days and on a counter easily taken care of for our sanity. The hotel is on a main road, sign is high and easy to see. They had a fitness center but we didn't see it. A really old fashioned soda machine with the window that has old cans in it to show what it has to offer. Also there was a breakfast but we always ate elsewhere due to wanting to try new places so no idea how good the breakfast may be here. Room had all the practical features travelers might need: refrigerator, microwave, toiletries, TONS of counter space in the bathroom area and a table and chairs. Lots of outlets as well.

Shiner Country Inn - Got some nice outdoor shots from outside the room. Can you tell we're Astros fans?

For what we wanted, 5 stars…read more What we wanted: A clean, well-lit place with good amenities to rest our heads for the night, in close proximity to the various sites. This place delivered in spades. It's catty-corner to Welhausen park and some-odd minutes walk or extremely short drive to our furthest destination - the Spoetzl Brewery. Everywhere else we wanted to go was inside that radius. I'll put it like this. My map app would bring up walking options before driving options. The AC blew snowballs (to put it in Texanese). The surroundings were calm and quiet. Despite being in the downtown part of Shiner, it felt like we were in a cabin in the woods. Don't get me wrong. The main road runs right by, but the town's so quiet at night that you barely notice. The restroom: I don't know about you, but quality facilities are a must. I'm including images of the double-shower and the toilet. The tank is huge and the toilet runs thoroughly. If you need a double flush, you might wanna get checked - medically speaking. That is, unless you had overindulged at Friday's Fried Chicken earlier that day (as we did). Then, a second flush might at least be the courteous thing to do. The bed: We got the king sized one, so there was plenty of room for both of us. The pillows were billowy and there were two for each of us. The mattress was comfy but properly firm, without being rigid. It didn't swallow us, but it didn't reject us either. A second blanket would be nice to add, in consideration of those with spousal blanket hogs. The rest: There was a mini fridge, a coffee maker, and a microwave for the kitchenette, wall-mounted cable TV, a mini upholstered bench, a wicker chair with throw pillow, two unique night stands, a wooden desk with drawers that had a steel bowl on it (perfect for for pocket items like keys, wallet, etc.) and matching 4-legged chair, a large stand-in closet, and plenty of outlets. The decor was sparse, which is fine for us. We weren't in Shiner to spend our time in the room. The floor was linoleum and the restroom had that cool old school tile. For safety's sake, I always recommend chanclas/shower shoes. There were plenty of towels. We never saw a bug, rodent, or other such pest in the room. There's also plenty of outdoor seating. Upshot: Clean, well-priced, and comfortable. What else are you looking for? It's a place to sleep and rejuvenate, not a palace.

Paranormal Activity Cut Our Visit Short!…read more We were looking forward to a relaxing weekend at Belle Oaks and were drawn in by the charming photos and description. But from the moment we arrived, it was clear that--while still beautiful--the inn was showing signs of wear, a faded echo of its restored glory from 20 years ago. What we liked: The property retains a nostalgic charm, with antiques adorning every corner. The hosts greeted us warmly and shared a bit of the inn's history. To their credit, they did warn us that the older electrical circuits might cause occasional flickering lights. What we didn't expect: Lights turning on and off by themselves. The television powering on in the middle of the night. Bed sheets being pulled off us while we slept. Feeling as if I was being touched and it wasn't my husband. The paranormal energy was far more intense than we'd anticipated--and ultimately, we decided to cut our trip short. Other concerns: The pool was dirty, and while breakfast was tasty, it was surprisingly sparse. As someone who's stayed in many bed and breakfasts, this was the first time I've encountered a buffet-style setup with no table settings, no water service, and a limited selection. We left both hungry and unnerved. Speaking with locals we learned that stories abound about hauntings in Gonzales.

BEWARE! We should NOT have  prebooked this hotel.  From the Bates motel appearance and stale…read moresmelling room to an overall creepy feeling.  Very 1st thing was being told I booked smoking.  But she'd gladly move me to a nonsmoking room for $5 extra. I should have pulled up the reservation on my phone right then but didn't.  Later when I had time I checked and found NO I indeed booked nonsmoking.  The owner was walking by our room, so I stepped out to let him know the error was on their end.  Basically I got a "you should be grateful" speech.  On how they gave us a good room, pet deposit down the road was $20 and theirs $15, how his security cameras are on all the time (showed me on his phone).  I knew then instead of a simple mistake, it was bait & switch scam.  They DO NOT honor the price advertised on Expedia.  It's just $5 so I knew it wasn't worth the hassle trying to communicate further with his supposed "limited English and understanding".  15 minutes later the Owner knocks on the door with our bill in his hands asking for a signature.  He did not remove the $5, because they "gave us the best room". It was NO suite, trust me!! Room 110  Still not worth a hassle I sign the bill and keep our copy as proof. We had a function to attend later and as we drove off we wave at the owner standing in the parking area.  7:30am as I was sitting in bed waking up, the door unlocks and is only stopped from opening by the chain in place AND peeping in is the OWNER!  When he saw me awake he quickly shut the door.  My husband wakes up and we decide to get out of there!  As we were packing our car right outside our doorway I see the owner and tell him "someone opened our door" His response was " he'd check into that".  WTH!!  EXTREMELY CREEPY!! I began watching my credit card and once all our charges were paid, I did not trust the integrity of this owner & wife, so I have cancelled my card from further bogus charges. Obviously the "GOOD" reviews are staged.   Our "clean" room left our socks BLACK on the bottom.  GO DOWN THE ROAD & stay at pet friendly BLACK GOLD!! Pay the extra $$!!  You will be sorry you stayed at this hotel!  I now ordered a mobile door alarm for future travels & hotel stays.  Expedia will be advised of our experience. My advice to owners is just add $5 to pet free, tricks are for kids and not welcome on bait & switch schemes. And I hope you never open a door unauthorized to a prepared LTC guest. I have now read other reviews stating you do this unacceptable quirk often.
