I have visited a lot of churches in conjunction with a parachurch ministry that I was associated with and have NEVER met a church this unfriendly. Even though we knew some people at the church, the reason we visited, when I was standing alone in the church lobby no one spoke to me. Very odd. The church is very male-centric so women, be aware, it's very clear that women are second-class citizens at this place.

I'm deeply disappointed by how this church handled someone experiencing homelessness who was…read moreoccasionally sleeping in their parking lot. Instead of reaching out to him, asking what he needed, offering resources, or showing him the compassion and dignity that you would expect from a Christian organization, the church chose to involve the police. I understand that churches have property, safety concerns, and boundaries. But there is a meaningful difference between setting reasonable boundaries and immediately treating a vulnerable person as a problem to be removed. Churches are supposed to be places where people in difficult circumstances can find compassion, support, and community. Calling the police on someone experiencing homelessness, without first making a genuine attempt to connect with or help them, feels completely contrary to those values. I hope the church reflects on whether its response demonstrated the kind of compassion and outreach it teaches others to show.

A few preliminary remarks before my main comments. The church building is a lovely white chapel…read morewith plenty of parking. There are two main entrances into the church. We entered the church from the front entrance yet many people enter the building from the side entrance. The church is denominationally Southern Baptist that affirms the Five Solas of the Protestant reformation (e.g. Calvinism). The Bible translation used by GBC is the English Standard Version (ESV) and/or New American Standard Bible (NASB). My family and I were quickly welcomed for our first visit. The deacons provided us with visitor welcome packets full of information about GBC. We were greatly impressed by the expository preaching, congregational worship (it really is the whole church singing), and the authenticity of God's people at GBC. Pastor Rod Santiago's preaching is exquisitely expositional. Pastor Santiago preaches verse by verse, with detail given to the original Biblical languages, to effectively communicate the full counsel of God. He exemplifies proper homiletics to the glory of God (i.e. sermons flow from exegesis to biblical theology with practical application). He exemplifies holistic preaching. He applies the Bible holistically to the person with the intent God transforms both the mind and heart with the glorious gospel of Christ. The theological richness and reflection of Pastor Santiago's messages are, by the power of the Holy Spirit, convicting, challenging, correcting, and heart-changing. There is proper balance at GBC, in the sense that, biblical theology births doxology and evidences good works. I think GBC's practice of communion is richly developed/nuanced. Any given person is warned with serious conviction that communion is a sign of the New Covenant, Christ's substitutionary death for the penalty of sin, and His imminent return for authentic Christians (that divides/separates believers and unbelievers). Communion is not a trifling practice nor is it a ritual; rather, it communicates/relates symbolically a direct connection (e.g. self-identifying) with the gospel. The worship consists of doctrinally enriched classic and contemporary hymns/songs. The style of music does not feel like a Christian rock concert where the vocalist is the focus. Quite the opposite. The whole church congregation echoes in songs of praise to God. The church unity is evident in the corporate singing. The lyrics promote praise, reflection, and celebration. The people at GBC express authenticity, transparency and security. I'd recommend anyone to visit and/or join. Blessings on you.

We've passed by this neighborhood church so many times but never attended a service in the past…read more We did attend a few Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University sessions here in the past though (which are highly recommended!) This year, we received a postcard in the mail where this church announced their Christmas services. We figured we'd stop by and check it out. We showed up around 4:20pm for their 4:30pm and were so glad we had come early because the place was filling up really quickly! They even had an overflow area with additional seating in the foyer area. The greeters and ushers were very friendly and welcomed us with huge smiles and handshakes. We were also handed a candle and wax holder/catcher thingie as we entered the sanctuary. We sang a few Christmas carols with a spin on them, heard a short Children's Message, and then the pastor gave a message about Christmas. The candlelight part of the service was neat. I've forgotten how pretty everything looks when the lights are turned out and only candles are burning. I was mesmerized by my candle and the burning wax. :P In their closing, one of the church staff announced that they had a little gift for new attenders, which was a book by Max Lucado. I thought that was a nice touch. As we left the sanctuary, we were pleasantly surprised to be given a huge cloth grocery bag with the church's logo on the front. Inside the grocery bag were some printouts of service times and a newsletter, as well as two fancy ballpoint pens, and a small Max Lucado book. They also had pencil pouches with school supplies and small toys for students too. I think it is so great that this church is reaching out to the community in this way. Definitely check out one of their services if you happen to be in the area.
