Steve is an amazing teacher of the Bible. He's clear, concise, accurate, and teaches with passion. So why only 1 star? Because there are serious issues and concerns with him. First of all, he is a narcissistic pastor. Whenever a pastor does all the announcements and doesn't delegate anything to others that is a red flag. Secondly, there have been situations in the past where church discipline towards a person(s) in the congregation was appropriate but Steve ignored it. For instance, a man who supposedly was set free from drug usage was doing drugs in the men's room before and/or after the church service. This was known by Steve yet was ignored. Many, many mature Christians have left Refuge because of the hypocrisy. Whenever he is 'called out' on things, he deflects and blames the accusers. In fact, if you were to confront him with this review he would probably say it's the reviewer's problem. This is a sign that loyalty to Steve is of utmost importance.
Third, there have been shady business dealings such as not applying for required building permits, there has been rampant verbal abuse of employees...the list goes on and on. Fourth, I've used the word 'pastor' here. That title cannot be rightly used to describe Steve because the word means 'shepherd'. A shepherd is supposed to love the sheep. There is no way to know Steve's heart but the fact that he would ignore known sin in the congregation and treat congregants the way he does is not loving. Purely from an external perspective, he seems to exude no genuine warmth for the people. Watch a few services online before committing to attendance. You will learn the Bible, but do it online only; then you will be safe from the detriment of this man as a 'leader'. Even if you watch online, do you really want to listen to a Bible teacher who is not living the life that he preaches about? Lastly pray for Steve, for God to humble him and restore him to a position of a true biblical shepherd. Steve is in great spiritual and maybe physical peril as the Word of God says in Proverbs 29:1, "He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." read more
