Great view and good service! We sat in the private area on the south side with a huge table. Our server was super friendly and got us everything quickly. The Buffalo wings were not bad, but needed to be far crispier. The meatballs were plain tasting. The tacos were good. Drinks were made well but a bit pricey. The view at night of the Empire State Building is priceless. read more

The food needs to vastly improve for this place to be worth it. My $20 Manhattan was sub-par, and the shrimp tacos were highly average. There was nothing special about the view. If you want a good rooftop experience look elsewhere. Only positive was service. read more

Great vibe, amazing atmosphere, companied with delicious food. The reason is at the roof of the Refinery hotel. It's super packed during lunch hours, reservation is highly recommended. They have some tables inside, bit most of the dinning area is under the sun, with a open glass roof. The main attraction of the rooftop is Empire State Building. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, with a nice bar in the middle, basking under the sun. They have a short menu, but still varies dishes between appetizers, entree and salads. We got lobster roll, fish tacos and their new item, lollipop lamb chops. All the items were to the mark. Fish taco was filled with several toppings and spicy mayo, giving it so much flavor and taste. Lamb lollipops were 3 pieces, all cooked to perfect temperature. Through out the dinner we had marvelous service, everyone at the restaurant is super friendly. read more

Great setup on the rooftop. Not much view but u can see the Empire State Building. Lamb was new on the menu. Baked and lightly pan seared. Lobster roll and fish tacos are good. The waiter recommend matcha madness (cocktail) for me. It's on the medium sweet side. Very good. read more

4.5 stars Mac & cheese was good! I really enjoyed the breadcrumbs and the seasoning on top. it was unique it had a light lemony flavor. I definitely come here for the view & the Mac The sliders for forgettable and not good. I would never order that again Don't go when it's raining because we had to sit indoors; it were still nice but obviously it's a rooftop refinery -you wanna sit outside. We're visiting friends from out of state so we I want to keep it simple and stay there and save time and create memories. My friend did not like how small her cappuccino was My friend likes their waffles and they also like the mushroom pizza not to die for but it was fine to good All in all this place is great for a special occasion and to have some mac & cheese. Fortunately, we don't drink as Muslims and I'm glad we don't. Expect to spend $25 without appetizers or drink. Get your dessert and coffee from the Paris Bagette across the block. read more

If you're looking for an event space for small to medium sized groups this is a great option in midtown. The staff is incredibly easy to work with. The menu provides options for everyone and is good. Eh...we didn't have a reservation on a MONDAY so we had to settle for the bar. Tried an espresso martini which was ok. They ran out of Baileys for the second one. Also tried the cocktail, Jam Session. It was refreshing but could have used a tad more bourbon. We ate the tater tots, which we tasty and crisp to perfection. And the Butcher's meatballs, which were ok. The decor was pretty and the service friendly, except for the unhelpful hostesses. Nice view of the Empire State Building. read more

The Refinery rooftop is gorgeous. I went for my friend's birthday, and the staff did not miss a beat. The drinks were correct and made well. The food was yummy; people raved about the pizza and wings. I ate the crudites. The DJ played good, clean music from every genre. The customers were fun, and everyone interacted with each other. Whether to say congratulations, happy birthday, anniversary, or dance, it was a positive vibe. On the roof, the view of the Empire State Building is stunning; take lots of pics. Enjoy! read more

We were promised "better seats with a view of the Empire State Building" if we agreed to move our reservation, but instead were crammed into a tiny table inside the bar. We spent our "nice dinner" shoulder-to-shoulder with people standing in line for drinks, unable to hear each other over the deafening music, and staring through the windows at guests outside enjoying the quiet city views we were told we'd have. To make matters worse, our reservation was moved under the excuse of "inclement weather" yet the weather was perfectly fine and plenty of guests were seated outside. Another falsehood, adding unnecessary inconvenience. Our waitress was pleasant and professional, but we were largely ignored and had to wait far too long to order and again to get the check. Combine that with the $50 cancellation policy, and we were trapped in a miserable evening that should have been a highlight of our trip. This experience felt misleading, dishonest, and downright disappointing. I would absolutely NOT recommend this place for a nice dinner out. Thanks for ruining what was supposed to be our one special dinner in the city. read more

Been here a dozen times. Best spot in midtown that's close to both grand central and Penn station. Came here for business lunch, happy hour drink, date night. Never disappoint. Unfortunately this is not a good review. I went to refinery rooftop on a saturday evening in february at 6:30ish. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us almost immediately! We didn't get to sit on the rooftop but the view was beautiful from what we saw of it! we got the crab cake to start, it wasn't very good. the burger was good and the steak panini was great! the service was fine, they weren't very attentive and didn't have a great attitude but nothing awful. the main issue i had with this place is they told my boyfriend (who is african american) that he couldn't wear a jersey inside, which is understandable. Also his jersey was a purple and yellow lakers jersey. so he covered up with his jacket and he then again was warned AGAIN after being covered up "don't uncover that jacket". While inside the restaurant during our meal; we saw a caucasian woman up and walking around and enjoying her meal... while wearing a bright orange jersey. i find that very distasteful and flat out discriminatory. because of my experience here i would not recommend this refinery rooftop. read more

Was so surprised to find a table at this rooftop for Memorial Day but I'm glad I did! I had the most pleasant experience with Ian the waiter who served our table and a really tasty meal! I ordered the brunch burger and added a lovely pepper jam on the side and it was delicious! Came out piping hot and cooked to a perfect medium. The fries were crispy and nicely salted. For drinks I tried Beat the Heat- a tequila based jalapeño cocktail and I found it nicely refreshing. A great choice for a warm day! read more

Between the service, the food, and the beautiful hotel room, we thank you Refinery, for letting us experience your beautiful amenities!!! The Refinery Rooftop is a perfect place for a date night, the frose and babydoll drinks were amazing. Not too sweet, and didn't taste too strong, although they definitely were! Time & Date: Sunday, 7/25/21 @ 7:40pm Reservation: not needed for bar, recommend for table Crowd: busy, bar full & almost all tables full Location: top floor of the Refinery Hotel I specifically came to this rooftop bar to try the frosé (and also for the ambiance), and it was pretty good! This drink has rosé, vodka, peach liqueur, simple syrup, lemon juice, orange juice, and strawberry. I was actually shocked at how strong the alcohol flavor came through. Keep in mind that if you don't have a reservation, there might not be tables available. However if you just want a drink, you can grab a seat at the bar if there is space. The drink was a whopping $18, but I guess that's what you should expect from a NY rooftop restaurant bar! read more

I love this NYC rooftop. Came here with my friends on a Saturday and was seated promptly (we made our reservation the same day). The drinks were delicious- I got the spicy margarita and the passionfruit based cocktail. Food was excellent as always- Their fries are crispy and the steak was cooked well. Not gonna lie, I ate the entire thing and left nothing behind. Rooftop bar food is usually not that great in my experience, but Refinery has AMAZING food! I cancelled a reservation being that I was not aware of the age limit and was charged? I had sent a message when reservation was made requesting I for being that it was for a 17 year old birthday and never heard back. Hope some can help with this.

For some prominent restaurants If you cancel too late, they will charge you a fee but you should call. A lot of restaurants are not answering emails.

We went for during Christmas and the outside portion is closed off but if you look at pictures you'll see a glass roof which still allows for the rooftop atmosphere even in the winter.

Based on when I was there for brunch, it's top 40. It's in the background so you can still have a full conversation even if you're sitting a bit far from each other.

I would make a reservation. I went there on a weeknight after work and our group needed a reservation. I don't know if it is a requirement, but I would call / email them to make sure you get your spot. Great place for drinks, BTW.

No one came back to check on the drinks, and when I asked for the check after about 20 minutes, there was no acknowledgment that I had barely touched mine or any inquiry about my experience. Overall, a place I once enjoyed and recommended now feels more like a standard dive bar where " Mixologist " were replaced by bartender and were fun cool looking and tasty drinks were replaced by " less complex cocktail ", lacking the warmth and attention to detail that once made it special.

Maybe that's standard for NYC speakeasies, but the places I frequented in other cities were more fun and felt more worth the price. I'll still give another NYC spot a try, but not coming back to Thyme.

The space isn't too large - the bar and stools take up most of the space but they also have some booths/tables. The place looks great. The cocktail menu is very creative - I got one of their seasonal mixes that was actually two drinks in one. The main cocktail was meant to be sipped first and they provided a small glass of beer to be sipped after. The name escapes me but it was very good. Since we had cocktails at dinner, we only stayed for one round. Service was good, and overall I enjoyed my time at Patent Pending. I would definitely return to explore more of their menu.

One aspect that needs some "refining" is the attitude of the staff at the door and the setup at the entry which ruins the experience from the very beginning. The velvet rope setup and subsequent haggling by the doorman is quite tacky and pretentious. It would appear that the venue is trying to present an image of "chic" and "exclusive" with velvet ropes and arbitrary "reservations only" excuses. This is midtown manhattan, not south beach...sorry. Attempted entry with a group of young, diverse professionals who were all dressed well and totally sober. Oh and don't forget that the number of females also far outnumbered the males and it was still somewhat early in the evening. Was at first told that "only reservations" but you can try waiting in the line which was short. Fine. People were being let in off the line, only to have our party (and others) randomly turned away. Why bother telling people to wait if there was no intention of allowing them in? I found the door "policy" to be quite obnoxious as well as the manner in which we and others were treated, including calling for security to move females off the line which were not bothering anyone or causing any scene at all and who's path to walk away was blocked by a crowd of people pleading to get in. Of course, the most pretentious and obnoxious aspect of this all might be management's response to less than stellar reviews which is the standard retort of "rooftop refinery isn't for everyone" Can you please clarify who exactly is it for? As a sidenote, we all got into another local rooftop lounge the same night and had a good time, plenty of other locations close by. read more

Racism is rampant at this business. I'd highly recommend going elsewhere if you are a person of color and don't want differential treatment because of it. Unfortunately my earlier review was deleted because I mentioned the full name of the employee (bartender) who was racist towards me when I was at Refinery, his first name is Declan, and this person demanded my card when a guy tried to buy me a drink at the bar. He said "he already bought you a drink, now I want to see your card." He had been giving me weird looks all night, and unfortunately, I can totally see that he had an eye on me and wanted to make sure I was put in my place. My friend actually posted a review about what happened on Google reviews, but the manager responded to it by saying that we were putting drinks on "unsuspecting tourists" tab. I actually made friends with the guy who bought those drinks so-- to the manager: sir, if you want his number to check with him that he was actually just trying to buy me a drink, I'm more than happy to connect you. He was JUST as appalled that your employee did this to me. Instead of protecting your employee's discrimination against women of color, maybe have a conversation with them so that people aren't treated so terribly when they visit your business. Another employee literally told me to report him, that's why I had the picture in the last review of his name. It's really that simple. Just tell your employees to not treat customers like that. This had to be one of the worst bar experiences I've ever had in my life. From a rude busboy to a waitress to an unattentive hostess with a bad attitude. They're only saving grace was the manager apologizing for the bad behavior. Which I think the manager should really look at his employees to where he explained that there was a lack of caring of communication because of the language barrier which is a poor excuse for rudeness and people not conducting themselves in a proper businesslike manner especially in a service business. Hi Steve , We did check in with your hostess and there wasn't a problem what time to be seated. Once it was an available seat the hostess said it was ours said no problem in the area would close at 11 PM. Then the busboy came over and said we're not allowed to sit there slammed the sign on the table when we were trying to understand what he was saying was rude to us then I called the waitress over and she said she's not allowed to service because we didn't go to the hostess which we had. It was nice of your manager to buy us a round with three of your employees truly having a bad attitude and maybe just a long night or day. I believe it started because of your hostess not informing the staff she sat us. Still there was no reason for the other employees to engage that way. This location discriminates against people of color, black people in particular. It is obvious this is not their usual clientele and by the way they treat us, it appears they would like to keep it this way. I have lived in NY for several years and I'm now currently getting my post grad at Columbia University, and have never had an experience quite like this. I should have read earlier reviews of this place as this seems to be a trend, especially with black women. The manager always seems to blame the victim when race is brought up instead of examining where him and his staff could be going wrong, and possibly check their biases. An appropriate response would be that they don't tolerate racism in any form at their establishment and that they would look into it, but I doubt thats whats going to happen. Instead they are likely to label me an angry black woman, as he has done in other responses. As a recap; The staff are rude at all levels and treat you according to their biases and racial misconceptions. It's sad to see this play out so blatantly in their interactions with black patrons, while there and in the comments and review section. Again, if you are black, don't bother attending unless you would like to receive an overpriced below average meal with a side a racism. read more

Went here tonight after leaving my job at a law firm. I ride my bike to work for my health and the environment. I was in shorts, tshirt and sandals and waited in line after locking my bike up to meet friends for a reunion [40 people RSVP'd)] for the event. When I got to the head of the line to be waved in I was asked if I had anything else to wear. Confused I answered no and waited as other people were shuttled in before me. Then the bouncer/doorman specifically asked me about my sandals and if I had something different to wear. I pointed out that there were women being allowed in with sandals so it didn't seem like the same rules applied across the genders. The bouncer/doorman then got hostile and told me he was trying to be nice but now I was being a dick. I laughed and turned to get back on my bike when he very specifically called me a "fag". I was stunned to hear this being thrown out. Completely floored that this happened in a NYC venue. My kids are gender and color blind as I have brought them up in this great city. To be subjected to this racism, hostility and homophobia is beyond bizarre in today's climate tolerance. Hey there Yelp fam! Let me tell you about our epic evening at the Refinery Rooftop. First off, major props to Lucy, our amazing waitress (fingers crossed I got her name right!). She made our Saturday evening in February feel like a breeze up on that rooftop. So, why were we there? To celebrate my partner's stellar birthday, of course! And let me tell you, from the drinks to the food, it was a taste sensation. Let's talk food. We basically made a shrine to their honey pepperoni flatbread on our table, ordering three rounds because it was just that addictively good. And those truffle tater tots? Whew, they hit different. THE EXPERIENCE WAS EMBARRASSING AND HUMILIATING!!! Don't waist your time comming here!!! I asked the "bouncer" if I, my sister and my brother-in-law needed to make a reservation to go in. He replied that was ok, we would need only pick up the line. When got our time to go up, appearded a guy and said for us that we couldn't go up and said that we needed a reservation. I told him that the bouncer said that We could go up, but wasn't whort it because He was very obnoxicus and extremely rude. I think it happened just because we were already holding our passaports and he saw that we are from overseas. I just wanna tell you little blond bouncer... Personally I love the layout of this rooftop and the design, the architect did a wonderful job but the people who work for this place are terribly incompetent. No one noticed me when I got out of the elevator and place was relatively empty so I sat myself by the bar area...20 minutes in and the chubby blond server didn't even greet a hello or bring the menu. If you don't like your job and are so miserable then just QUIT! My date noticed the same thing, she was ringing the cash mahcine beside our table at least a dozen times and never cared to ask if we needed anything...so I just got up and left, and on my way out I complained to the host lady and instead of apologizing for the sour experience she started making excuses while I could overhear the chubby blond server complain about her hours to the manager who was clearly out of touch with the clientele...just pathetic! I gave 3 stars because I didn't get to FULLY immerse myself here. The atmosphere is an upbeat lounge. Good music, room to bop and sway with a friend, or you can relax and chat away. There were three private parties going on that sectioned off most of the place when I went. That limited me to the bar, which is nice in itself. It also wasn't hard to be seen by the bartenders and actually get service. I buckled down and paid for my pricey calamari AND I DON'T REGRET IT. I'd throw my money at them for some more any day of the week. If you want a spot that you can chill at but still feel classy and get a snack, try this place. And talk to the hostess if getting a table is important. They'll try to help you out the best they can. It was raining when I went, but I don't think you get a good view of the empire state building. What an awful doorman. The doorman at the refinery rooftop is a terrible person that treats their customers awful. The terrible experience started when the doorman tried flirting with my friend and I, when we did not flirt back he told us we need to be nicer to the guy who decides if we enter the venue. He then out of nowhere says to my friend that he likes Indian girls because they know how to take care of their men. She is Indian and found that to be a racist comment. The doorman came off like a total creep. When the rest of our party arrived he told us we had to care of him. He said we had to pay $20 each or we had to leave. When we refused to grease him he told us to have a nice trip back to New Jersey. Just an FYI how you will be treated by the doorman at this rooftop in midtown. This is a really nice rooftop bar with amazing views of the empire state building. They have a nicely decorated outdoor space from where you can get a great view while sipping on your drinks, as well as a cozy indoor space with a great little glass roof. The drinks here were well made and priced at standard NYC rooftop bar rates. The food was a revelation though, we got the sausage flatbread, fish tacos and the meatballs and all of them were delicious! You definitely wont feel like there isn't enough to nibble on here. It was moderately busy on a Thursday evening, mostly an after work crowd. They did close the rooftop a bit early though, which was a bit of a bummer. The time spent indoors was fine anyway and we wound up after one drink. I can see myself coming back here next summer. read more

First of all, I have to say that this is a really nice venue. Nice atmosphere and vibes. HOWEVER, THEY HAVE VERY NASTY BOUNCERS! My friend and I were going to a private event and apparently we were on the list. The bouncer gave us such a hard time and especially gave my friend this EXTREMELY DISGUSTING DISCRIMINATING ATTITUDE just because of her race! It was very disrespectful and unprofessional. Totally ruined our mood before we get in. If it was not for our friend's special celebration event we would definitely just leave and reported them right away. so for this place I will say: "MINUS 5" stars for the bouncer 3 stars for the service 4.5 stars for the atmosphere 3.8 stars for the view 3 stars for the drink 3.5 stars for the music read more

This is definitely my new favorite spot in NYC. There are exquisite views of the Empire State building and it has a very loungy laid-back feel with outdoor cushy seats and wooden swings. The drinks are super tasty, very summer refreshing with an array of interesting fruit and flavors in them. The inside of the bar has a very rustic feel with a water feature, exposed wooden planks and a fireplace, makes you feel comfortable and right at home. Also, there is tons of natural lighting on the inside with the openness of the windows, just an overall neat experience and place. Overall, I would definitely come back here for happy hour after work and certainly entertain clients and invite co-workers. read more

Discovered this charming rooftop gem during our NYC visit, and it turned out to be an incredibly cool brunch spot! Despite the winter weather, the rooftop was snugly enclosed, shielding us from the rain. Surprisingly, the rain added a unique brunch vibe, creating an even cozier atmosphere. Our culinary adventure included the delectable crab cake, a delightful beet salad, and a dish featuring chorizo and eggs--its name eluding memory but not its delicious taste. A definite recommendation for anyone in town, though securing a reservation is wise as this place tends to get quite busy.
