We've never…read moregone on a fishing excursion before, so we weren't sure what to expect, but Hooksetters made everything easy, comfortable, and enjoyable! We went out on one salt water excursion from Homer and 3 river charters, which were all exceptional. The guides called the night prior to ensure we knew what time to meet them the next day and to confirm the location. There were several changes to our itinerary based on the weather, which were communicated well ahead of time so we could plan appropriately. The guides were personable, professional, and worked incredibly hard to make sure we caught as many fish as possible. They filleted the fish on the river and on the boat back to harbor (ocean), then we were able to drop the fish off at the processors on our way back to the lodge for freezing and packing. Each person is allowed 50 pounds of fish, and we easily filled two boxes with halibut and sockeye salmon. The lodge is equipped with lots of extra equipment for use - waders, rain-gear, fishing poles, coolers, etc. Breakfast is a help yourself situation with cereal, yogurt, fruit, breads, and one cooked item that can be heated like quiche or breakfast burritos. Lunches are packed the night before so you can grab and go. They contain sandwiches, chips, cookies, trail mix, nuts, and bottled water. Hors d'oeuvres were served every night but Thursday, the cook's night off. They usually consisted of a soup, meats, cheeses, and crackers. There were also meatballs and jalapeño poppers. Dinner was varied, with salads each night and bbq ribs, salmon, bacon wrapped filet, bbq brats, and pork loin. There was also dessert, of course! If you're late, the cook wraps up your food so you can heat it up later. All in all, I was very impressed with this location, but the people were what really made it memorable. Everyone was so helpful and friendly, especially for rookies like us. There were several guests who had been here before and were back again, and I can see why. For a great guided fishing experience on the Kenai, check out Russell fishing and stay at Hooksetters!

When we landed in Anchorage, we received a message that Martin had stained his foot and had to cancel. We were devastated that we might miss a trip we were dreaming about, but accidents happen and did not blame him for getting hurt. We were told we would receive our money back within 30 days. We scrambled and were about to take a trip with Smokey Bay air (go there!). Well its been over 75 day and no refund and does not respond to emails at all. So now I have to file complaints and take them to court to get my money back. Do not use this company if you can't afford to be without $2300 for nothing.

My husband and I booked a bear viewing trip in July 2025 for my birthday. The day before the trip the owner cancelled because he "sprained his ankle". He assured my husband we would be refunded in full but several months later and after many attempts to contact him we have not received a refund. This is apparently not the first time this has happened. We have sought legal action and just hope to help other hard working individuals avoid getting their money stolen from this man again.

The Dean Homestead tour takes place on a big plot of land east of Homer that artist/builder/farmer Jeff Dean and his family have constructed. It's a series of art studios, living spaces, and animal enclosures that blew our minds for their ingenuity and creativity. Learn about coloring metal through heat! Meet shaggy donkeys, friendly goats, and - best of all - a yow (yak/cow) named Yeti who is just enormous. It's all on a rambling bit of hillside overlooking water, mountains, and glaciers. More than anything else in Homer, this gave us treasured memories and stories that our friends and family can't quite believe.

Their property is beautiful, their homemade structures are special and very thought through. The family that lives here is very kind and happy to answer any questions you have. Their animals are nice too and they have a yak/cow mix - a YOW!!! The yow (named Yeti) is 2500 pounds and absolutely huge! They are a family of artists, and very unique artists too! They have steel carvings, brass sculptures and more. They show you the process of how they go about their art too. It's amazing - would recommend this place to anyone.
