The Student Recreational Sports Center houses the Councilman Billingsley swimming and diving complex. It is dedicated to longtime swim coach Doc Councilman now deceased. Also to Hobie Billingsley who attended the meet and now in his early 90's. Both were influential figures in the world of swim and dive for decades. The complex built in the mid 90's sets on Law Ln and Union St. The aquatic complex consist of almost 145,000 of swimming and diving capability. The complex also houses Indiana's polo team. The complex features an 8 lane Olympic size pool with depths of seven to eight feet for greater speed. The complex also features an indoor diving tower. Two one meter and three meter spring board diving. As well as up to 10 meter platform diving. The facility is immaculate and maintained to high standards. Air quality superb. The beauty of the facility comes from the wonderful banners and photos posted on the walls. It really brings the history of Indiana Swim & Dive to life. There is spectator seating, however not large. Estimated capacity is under 500. The wooden bleachers are in need of refinishing. A highlight however for spectators is the gigantic video board showing times and video. They also have a much smaller one at the diving well for polo and dive. Being a Hoosier I can't help but be a fan of the Student Recreational Sports Center / Councilman Billingsley Swimming Pool. The SRSC gets the job done. My undergrad gym was brand new and state-of-the-art (I mean Kobe played…read morebasketball there during offseason + free towels during your workout + climbing wall, etc.) so I had high standards going in. The SRSC doesn't even come close, but eh it works. It's like a 24 hour fitness - good enough. It features: *Multiple strength & cardio areas - I typically go to the strength area all the way at the end of the hall, past the basketball/volleyballs. That's where they have 6 or 7 racks + weight. Warning: clean off the bars before you use them - they're filthy. They have an amazing amount of treadmills (even curved treadmills!), rowers and stair steppers. *Group exercise/yoga & Pilates studio - I've taken a Zumba class here and tried to take a yoga class (addt'l $8 punch card needed!) They're just okay, but hey it's cheap. *Seven racquetball/wallyball courts, two squash courts, table tennis, & badminton *Five basketball/volleyball courts - Haven't played basketball or volleyball, but I've played intramural kickball on these courts. They'll just partition off a section of intramural sports. *The Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center (CBAC) Olympic-sized pool/diving well - Swam here once. Not much to say except ask the lifeguards which lanes you can swim in. They'll often have swim meets at this pool, so parking can get a little crowded. *Indoor walking/jogging/running track - this runs right over the basketball/volleyball courts. *Futsal Court TON OF undergrads though so I typically go right when it opens in the AM (6am on weekdays/8 am on weekends).

In comparison to Paynetown Campground…read morewe found Hardin ridge better because, the restrooms are clean, private showers, beautiful views, the sites are mostly private, fishing ponds, nature trails and is a Federal Camping area. In contrast, Hardin Ridge may not be ideal for camping, if you have a boat, which we do... there is a solution for boaters though, we rent a RV site and can park right on the site. You need to do your homework though!!! Only the right side of the campground can be reserved, and the rest is first come first serve. There is a large parking lot near the launch area as well, although we do not trust leaving our boat. One other reason you might not like Hardin Ridge is the proximity to stores for gas, groceries, beer and other supplies. In Paynetown, you are basically missing the wilderness experience, you are in a field seeking shade. Make sure to bring shower shoes and wait in line for the showers! We are consistently harassed by their rent a cop...seriously! For example, we were told the park does not like Rap! They want you to be realllllly quite at 10:00, and trust me they do walk into your site and tell you to be quite. We have guitars and were not allowed to play them. Another example, was we then thought we would get a primitive site close to the water so that we could park our boat in front of our campsite. Well, funny story...we came in from a day on the lake and other boats parked on our site, walked right through our camp area...I confronted one. Lets just say Conservation Officers were called to the situation, They did nothing to stop these people from walking into are camp... You are close to amenities though, there is a store and gas station close by, and many parks for little ones. it is flat for tents. CITY SLICKERS Welcome...lol To sum it up, we have never had people problems at Hardin Ridge, and because we have a boat we are 3 min to 4winds Marina, and a skip to Allens Creek!! Hardin Ridge overlooks Allens Creek. There is quite time but nobody has ever said anything about a low radio or a strum of a guitar... nobody ever bothers our stuff or us!! On my visit i purchased tickets/admission on the website because i could not tell if i could get in on location or not. Once we got thru the check in process we went to see the indoor pools first.... Well they were closed. OK... Went outside and its pretty expansive and clean. One of the non-tube slides was down as well as looks like 1/3rd of the exterior swimming items were down for what looked like cleaning since i saw staff working on it. From the maps view basically the huge lazy river side. As a non-resident the pricing i feel was a good value for goofing off in the water for roughly 3 hours. Onsite food isn't anything to rave about but at least it is available and it was not crazy prices. Tons of life guards doing an awesome job from what i could tell while watching the people watching the rest of us so i felt super safe and confortable they were keeping an eye on all the kids. I have lived in Indianapolis my entire life, and never heard of Fairfax State Recreation Area at…read moreMonroe Lake. From what I understand, it's even fairly well-kept secret from the locals. My friend visits the beach every weekend with her boys and others join her from time to time. She had lived in the area for several years before she knew it was there. We drove down for the day earlier this month and really enjoyed it. The beach is a little rocky and muddy, but I suppose that's to be expected in Indiana. It's a nice little spot to lay out, hang out with friends and family, or take out your floats, paddle boards, kayaks, etc. I would visit again. I give it four stars for a couple of reasons. 1. The difficulty in getting down to the beach area since there is only one small walkway. 2. The restrooms are not well-marked, and are thoroughly disgusting. Although a DNR employee sits near the restrooms, they don't seem to do a whole lot. There were people using one of the grills near the restrooms who thought it would be a good idea to play soccer on the sidewalk instead of the grass. They made no effort to move or stop playing as people had to walk by to the restrooms, and the DNR employee cared more about asking someone to move their vehicle than ask those disrespectful guests from hitting others with their soccer ball.

Like a lot of parks, they have shade trees, a large playground, basketball and tennis courts, and decent parking around the park. There is also a swimming pool and a community center on the north end. There are several paved walking loops around the park contained within the one way road that loops around the park. But here are some things you might be surprised by: A Girl Scout Cabin that is an authentic log cabin. A tank sitting near the entrance A miniature golf park by the highway (fee required) A Bandstand that can double as a shelter and from the back, looks like a castle turret An extended slide that sits on top of a hill with tunnels that run through it. The slide starts on the hill and finishes on the bottom for a long ride! An elevated sand box inside a stone castle, i.e. a sand castle! The park is filled with fun things to see and do. It seemed to be generally in good condition. It may not have been planned from scratch, but it makes the best of the odd assortment of pieces collected there. Review #2986

They also have a community center and shelter accessible from Q Street with plenty of parking. Parking also is available off Brian Lane Way on the west side of the park. The only negative I had was that I found all the fencing around the different sections of the park (tennis, aquatic area, and skate park) made it difficult to reach the other side of the park without driving out and around the neighborhood to the other side. One bonus though was the pair of limestone guardian heads along the path up to the playground. Very cool! Review #1982
