Red Turnip Theatre is the brainchild of some of the finest luminaries of local theatre, and the plays they have staged have all been nothing short of beautiful.
I'm a huge fan of Red Turnip Theatre and all the work it has put out thus far. Most major theatre companies put out shows with full production value: an elaborate stage, complete props, decorative costumes, the whole shebang, but Red Turnip never relies on extravagance. In fact, a part of what makes their plays so magical is that everything about them feels so so very simple and intimate, but so intelligently and meticulously brought to life that it becomes powerful. They work so hard to let the true meaning of the material seep out of each part of the production and the performance, that what you end up with is not just a minimalist or stripped down play, but the pure unadulterated truth. And the effect of seeing it is not always pretty; in fact most of the time the characters in their plays make choices that frustrate you deeply enough to make you want to rip your hair out, or gut you and pull out deeply painful memories. But they will also make you genuinely laugh, cheer and cry tears of joy. Watching their plays is like getting sucked in hard face-first into life and slapped hard by reality in the face. It's cathartic. Even if it hurts, it feels good after, and you end up energized, inspired and full of new thoughts and perspectives. It only becomes an afterthought that the plays they stage are recipients of prestigious awards such as the Pulitzer Prize and the Olivier Award.
If you want to watch intelligent, subtly passionate and powerful plays with the realest situations and the realest characters, watch a Red Turnip play. It will fill your heart with a lot of things, and I can definitely pinpoint one of those things although it's probably the least important of all that they will make you feel: Immense pride for our local theatre scene. read more
