Red Neds Gourmet Pie Bar is one of my relatives go to places when they are in Nelson Bay. I've been wanting to try a meat pie speciality spot since I landed in Sydney; this was my first official one. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 1:30pm). There was a small queue but it moved fast. Over 50 flavours to choose from with most costing between $7.00 to 8.20. The pies come out piping hot. There's about three tables outside so very limited seating. Interesting that they have a for sale sign up on the window. - Drunken beef steak ($7.00 AUD) - this was my savoury pie choice. I found the sauce overly sweet and lacked flavour. - Apple & mango ($7.00 AUD) - for my second pie, I tried a sweet one. Pretty standard except this one they serve cold. Mangoes were sweet but only came on top. Inside is all apple slices. - Scallops & prawns ($8.20 AUD) - nice that you get real whole pieces of scallop. - Lobster, prawns and barramundi ($8.20 AUD) - this is their #1 seller. It reminded me of clam chowder but in pie format. - Lambs fry ($7.00 AUD) - my uncle preferred this one to the spaghetti bolognese. - Spaghetti bolognese ($7.00 AUD) - actual spaghetti inside which is unique. I think eating a whole one is a bit too much. - Kangaroo teriyaki ($7.00 AUD) - with leeks and mushroom. Decent enough but I'm still on the hunt for a satisfying pie experience. read more
Red Neds Gourmet Pies: A small place with over 50 variety of pies,Yikes! That's a lot of pies! Limited seating unfortunately Had the lamb mint pie,the mint sauce taste over powered the whole pie My wife's kangaroo pie,she felt it was pretty good We shared a scallop pie,I think I've been spoilt with those pies in Tasmania because I didn't think much of this one The Apple pie was the best of what I tasted, sliced apple inside though is a little annoying to eat Was expecting more from the place, but I would still go back to try something else read more

If there's one thing I like more than meat pies it's meat pies. I was born and raised a bandit for the humble gravy boat and, God willing, I'll die one too. So when I stumbled upon Red Neds in Nelson Bay I dropped to my knees on the pavement Platoon-style and hurled a scream of thanks to the pie gods, because this joint is the epitome of the awesome independent business I love finding as a Yelper and an appreciator of amazing independent businesses - colorful locals and a simple idea brought to life with flair, humour, and a life-size model of the bushranger Ned Kelly out front. There are over 50 varieties of meat pie, all baked daily. And we're not talking curry, mushroom, steak, blah blah pedestrian variety blah. No. Oh, no no no. This is some serious gourmet shit. Things like chunky yearling steak and fresh hand cut vegetables seasoned with garlic pesto, herbs and hollandaise on a bed of potato, leg ham and cheese melt; and beef Stroganoff with sour cream, onions and mushrooms covered with a bed of potato. Epic stuff. I went for the lobster, prawns and barramundi in coconut cream with leeks, celery and 4 different fresh green herbs on a bed of potato with cheese melt and garnished with dill. Yes, that's all in one pie. No, I'm not mistaken. Yes, it's as delicious as it sounds. Not the cheapest pie in town at $6.80, but a bargain when you look at the ingredients and have your underpants blown off by how good it tastes. I'm sending everyone here. If only it wasn't 2.5hrs from Sydney. read more

Nothing better than a good pie. This place is the best. If your after just a plain meat pie or a lobster pie. Every one of these pies are fantastic I am picky when it comes to my pies and I wouldn't say how good the pies are if they wearnt. One of the best pies I've had anywhere in Australia read more
Friendly staff talked us through the options and were very patient! My chicken/cheese/asparagus pie was delicious and my boyfriends sausage roll was great. Thank you! Definitely recommend a visit if you're up this way read more
I came here for lunch on Saturday, and ordered a chunky steak and vegetables open pie. There are lots of awards and prizes on the wall, so my expectation is high. The toppings (vege/cheese/ham) are dry and lack of flavour. The filling is pretty good, tasty chunky yearling steak and gravy. When I started to eat the crust, I found a tiny cockroach at bottom of the container. I showed it to staff, they said it's not in the pie. I knew it, because it's not cooked! read more

We had a pie from here almost every day we were at Nelson's Bay. This place has very delicious pies. I think the best part about the pies was the crust. The crust was soooo flaky, just the way i like it! The lobster pie was delicious, but not as delicious as it sounded. The whole taste was a little bit on the sweeter side. The pies are gourmet, so they are more expensive than the usual meat pies. But overall, I really enjoyed coming to this place (:* read more

From the Business
Specialties
Everything is freshly made on the premises at Red Neds and Barry bakes his pies off throughout the day to ensure you get the freshest pies on your visit even for the most discerning person. Barry says he enjoys watching people looking at his "specials" sandwich board outside his shop and going goggle eyed at some of his weird creations such as Steak and Guinness on St Patrick's Day, Bully Beef and veggie's on ANZAC day, Kangaroo Teriyaki pie on Australia day or BBQ wild turkey, bourbon and beef pie or smoked chicken and camembert. "You know the best way to be known is for people to talk about the crazy guy from Nelson Bay who makes weird but wonderful creations. If you start with the best ingredients, you can be the best in the business and always dare to be different" says Barry.
History
Established in 1997.
Red Neds Gourmet Pies was established at one of Australia's best holiday locations, Nelson Bay, in 1997 by master pie maker Barry Kelly. It has proven to be extremely popular with both the locals and tourists alike and has quickly gained a reputation as one of the best gourmet pie shops in Australia. The name "Red Neds" comes first of all because Barrys last name is Kelly and is synonymous with one of Australia's infamous folk law heroes bushranger Ned Kelly. Ned Kelly's fathers name was "Red" hence the name RED NEDS. Barry learned his basic craft in a 5 star international hotel, firstly as a food cost controller and working with international executive chef Fred Stahali from Switzerland.
