We checked out the car show (which was awesome, by the way!) and were looking for an air conditioned spot for lunch. A 50's like burger and shake spot seemed to go with the theme for the day. And my entire family all really enjoyed everything! Burgers are great! Shakes, fish sandwiches, hot dogs and fries are also delicious! Great service and great food. They have gluten free buns for the burgers! We tried their bacon cheeseburgers and truffle fries, and everything was delicious. Asked for a side of spicy mayo and that was so so good for dipping the fries. We shared a banana shake to go, and our server split it into 2 cups and it was the perfect serving size. So disappointing. Been coming to Red Knapps for 20 years & it just isn't the same. The bun seemed to be the original bun but the burger patty was dry, had no flavor and was half the size of the bun. Stick with the shakes. Must be popular for as busy as it was but my palette couldn't handle it. I was batting clean up so I got some of a bland mushroom burger. The meat had no flavor and the mushrooms were super thick and not at all cooked. The chicken sandwich was tender and juicy but the minced onions and cheese whiz on it turned both my sons and my stomachs. The atmosphere was very festive and fifties which was nice. All the ladies working were smiling and friendly but the food fell short unfortunately. If we make it up this way we may give it another try but probably just the shakes. read more

It's been about 4 years since my last visit to Knapps. It's in a great location, right in the middle of downtown Rochester and it really stands out with the old school look. I ordered a cheeseburger deluxe and split an Oreo milkshake and onion rings. You can ask for sliced pickles which isn't included in the deluxe. They do charge an extra $0.50 to make it a deluxe (lettuce, tomato and mayo). The bun is really unique here as it's a flat, soft bun with a huge diameter. Lol. The onion rings are ginormous, crispy and slightly sweet. The quantity is technically small (about 4-5 pieces) but each piece is huge so easily sharable. My friend ordered a sloppy joe and apparently they are known for that and the cheeseburger. The old school look combined with a simple burger and shake really makes it an enjoyable experience. Our waitress was really friendly which is always a bonus for me. I wouldn't say this is the best food or burger but it's a good place to stop by for a no hassle meal. I'd been wanting to take my daughter here for a while, so she could have the Red Knapp's experience that I remember from when I was younger. They were closed on the last day of Rochester Lights, so we ended up going somewhere else. I got a chance to take her this week, and she enjoyed it. It could use a cleaning, and it was pretty cold inside until they turned on the heat on the side we were sitting on, but it was good enough for what it is. She enjoyed sitting at the counter and spinning on the seat. She also liked that the Santa is on the building across the road. The milkshake was good, and the burgers were fine. They are not your usual burgers, they're huge in diameter. The fries were fresh. It is not cheap, though. For the two of us (and she's only 5), it was too pricey for what we got. I loved the theme, it was super cute and retro and brought me back to a time I wish I could have grown up in. The burger was delicious & a perfect size -- very filling! I am so close to giving this place two stars because of the burger. Something about the simplicity of it made it ok and the bun is really what sold me. However, everyone else in my party thinks I'm crazy to consider more than one star. When walking in, we started as a party of four. We weren't greeted and sat ourselves. We also weren't told there was a back room until we finished eating so my mom uncomfortably sat at the bar. We also had plenty of company from nat and flies. It was disgusting. We had to put a napkin over my moms chili while she used the restroom because the bugs wanted the first taste. I was excited to hear about the new ownership and the revamped menu! But we ordered for carryout and it was nowhere near the quality it used to be. Times are hard with the pandemic and I don't know what their business has been like, but the burgers tasted of nothing and were overcooked and the classic bun was hard and stale. The fries were pale and limp and flavorless. The crispy chicken slider tasted like it was fried in old fish frying oil and basically everything was very underwhelming. They forgot part of our order too, but we couldn't be bothered to drive all the way back in the snow to get that burger, it just wasn't worth it. I really really want this place to be successful. We have enjoyed getting our fast food fix in this super cool spot for years. I hope that as things get back to normal they can work on the quality of food to reflect the location! read more

I went after not having been in over 20 years. Did the turkey burger. Probably the most underrated thing on the menu. Still as good as I remember. Onion rings were also great. Chocolate milkshake excellent. I cannot eat full portions here and came with my mom, we split everything and they were nice about it, understanding. It could have been a bit cleaner but otherwise we were very pleased with our experience. Came to a little over $20 with tip, not bad at all especially considering it's all made from scratch and we left very full. Best time to come IMO is on a nice day during the week. Where you can walk it off enjoying a nice downtown stroll, avoid the weekend crowds and chaos. Although it's a dairy bar it is very well known for their out of the ordinary burgers, the reason the burgers are strange to the human eye is because he bun is made by the bakery next door "Home Bakery" which means the buns were a bit flat but full of flavor! Nice little place in the middle of downtown Rochester with average hamburgers and a wide variety of generally tasty milk shakes. One caveat: eat there. If you get milkshakes they give you a glass and a side shaker with a refill. Not too bad for your $7. If you get it to go, you pay the same $7 but get a small to-go cup and you get to sit there and watch the kids that work there drink what would have been the refill while you wait for your food to be packed up. They could offer it to the customer since you're waiting and you paid for it. Or get bigger to-go cups. I wasn't impressed by the sense of entitlement. I had a an orange creamcicle shake and it was good. My 8 year old son had a cherry shake and didn't even finish it because it was too sweet. An 8 year old complained his shake was too sweet. Whenever I'm in Red Knapp's, I half-expect Marty McFly to come through the door at any minute. Their malts are amazing. Forget about dairy queen! Forget about Coldstone! Forget every other place you've had a shake or malt at, because Knapp's has been doing it longer and better than any of them. They serve food as well. I'd rank their burger as good, but not excellent. Still, I always felt like it was Red Knapp's itself that was making the dining experience interesting, and not the food per se. That being said, it's not a bad burger - it's actually quite nice (especially coupled with the McFly anxiety above). I'd suggest coming here most especially if you have kids; the hike up to Dairy Queen on north Main street is long, and driving there is pretty impossible in the summer as well. Red Knapp's has amble parking in the FREE public lots between 2nd and 3rd, and is less than a block walk. Plus it's delicious. And cheap. Why aren't you there yet? read more
